unstable ping

Thu Aug 09, 2007 3:10 pm

HI, I have quite unstable ping from client (PC) to mikrotik (AP, routerboard 532, CM9, very good signal (300m/10dB aerials)),channel is used just by me - no interference,5GHz). Another routerboard works with same result(!)

any idea?
thanks for help, Radek

You may want to try to set your ack timing manually if you have not already.

If this is an active link, then normal data flow may delay the PING replies.

no traffic, just icmp... no idea? I have same result with more routeboards!

no,
my idea, you can create like ambulance traffic policy way on your icmp protocol.

In 802.11a, 12 clients connected, some active some passive but all connected. Ping times are consistent for passive clients.
Switch the same to 802.11b, then even the ping times for passive clients fluctuate. Wonder if this is not a technology issue ie DSSS vs OFDM. Not sure, but I suppose 802.11a OFDM can communicate with 4 clients simoultaneously whereas 802.11b DSSS can communicate with only one at a time. Thus, it is more likely for DSSS to show more fluctuation compared to OFDM. In other words, 802.11b is crap.... 802.11g does OFDM, anyone tried it for ping times?

Just check, when only one client is active on 802.11b, ping times are consistent unless a queue limit is reached.

I have it! bad latency of ping appears when the client moves from for example 54 to 36 Mbps or any other speed combination. So when the client changes the speed ping latency goes abnormally high. If I set the ap to 802.11b (11Mbps) then ping goes well because clients work on 11 Mbps and not lower (because of better strenght of signal)...:( well, interesting thing is that the lowcost AP don't do this.....

the low cost AP also dont deliver the level of manageability that ROS does :P
