wireless redirection

Thu Jul 22, 2021 11:45 am

I work at a restaurant witch has a digital menu hosted on a local server. What we need to do is, as soon as the clients connect to the wireless network get directed to the menu that hosted on the server. Can we do it ?
NOTE: we don't use hotspot

Strange question but okay.
If I am in a store and on my iphone want to join a network I go to settings and join.
The only time I can be forced anywhere is when I open the browser.

So just choosing the wifi network doesnt guarantee anything will be viewed.
If you mean when someone opens the browser can they be redirected elsewhere?

Not sure, if I type in https://address, can that be redirected to a different address?
Perhaps there is some DNS redirection that can be done, but I dont have the technical knowledge to help you.

I have been doing that in Ruckus for about a decade.

As we all know... I won't get good enough radio performance to even mess with Mikrotik wireless in my commerical installs.

In ruckus, under guest access you set up the redirect in
"Onboarding Portal Authentication Redirection"

So once they connect to the SSID...
The Tik gives them a class B IP address.
Sets there DNS to use a kid friendly DNS.
Grabs any traffic sent to other well known DNS and redirects it to that kid friendly DNS.
They are also banned from talking to anything else onsite even at layer 2.
But... As soon as they get an IP... The first time they open a Browser... They get sent to the digital menu hosted externally.
After that... They can wonder as they like.

But it's a lot smarter to use QR codes on the table.

Those work even if the user is on cellular.
And believe it or not... Some people only use things like apps. So they never use the browser.

QR codes solved this problem at all our stores.

Now if you locally host the menu...
Still use the QR code and make it available externally.

Use two (optionally) QR codes. One to connect to your free wifi, and the other to open a web link (the menu at http:10.0.10.5/index.html or whatever).

Buy some ultra-cheaper tablet.....
Just one example
1024x600 50€

Or put the menu on public server and provide QR code to guests
