Is this possible??

Thu Oct 18, 2007 4:34 pm

Were toying with the idea of offering a 20mbps contented service in 5ghz bands. Do you think this is really possible in a point to multipoint scenario?

We have the oportunity to use all MT hardware and we hope to use 5.4ghz for backhauls and 5.8ghz for service provision. We know this is operating on the limits of the technology and we wonder if this is a pipe dream or if it's actually possible! We would expect not to offer guarenteed bandwidth but would hope at some times the burst download speed would reach around 20mbps mark and that even at busy times the speed should still be pretty good.

Does anybody with any real experience of these speeds have any feedback? We think the p2p backhaul performance is possible but were not sure if point to multipoint AP's really can achieve this level of service? If it was possible how many users can we pop on each channel?

depends on the number of client radio's connected, signal strengths, and what hardware you are using.

with a 112/133c as the cpe, you effectivly max out around 4-5mbps in ptmp (although we've seen it go as high as 8mbps)

with a 532 as the AP, you max out around 10-14mbps total (shared across all connected cpe's) in ptmp

we offer 3mbps ptmp similar to how you are proposing (we use nstream+polling, and clients connected via pppoe), and generally nearly all customers are able to acheive maximum bandwidth (althought not all at once), but we do see issues sometimes that cause some customers to have trouble going over even 1mbps.

Thanks for your feedback. We do already provide a service like you do in 2.4ghz mixed b/g mode with 5ghz backhauls no nstream or bonding duplex etc, and we currently get simmilar results as you mention with up to 20-30 custs per AP.

1/ Are you using 5ghz AP and getting these results in 54mbps mode? We hoped better with MT hardware on 5ghz.

2/ Is it possible for any client hardware to get up to 20mbps from a 5ghz AP in turbo mode?

yes, all 5.8 gear, we normally lock the transmit rate to 24mbps or lower, most radios output far weaker signals when you increase above 24mbps data rate, and we've found error rates are far better and connections more stable as well.

in turbo mode, with a powerfull enough processor in the both AP and CPE, and a strong enough signal to support the data rate necessary, yes 20mbps to a CPE is acheivable, but you're likley only going to get one CPE per AP at a time to pull that.
