xr9 vs sr9 noise floor

Fri May 02, 2008 7:47 pm

I changed a tower site of mine from sr9 to xr9. The noise floor on the sr9 was-96 and just with the card change the noise floor went to -83. This is on the 10mhz channel. The 5 mhz channel seems to be fine at -96

Any one else seen this?

as this is a mt-only-forum and since a few days or week the mood is getting very serious about that, i would recommend asking this question at the ubnt-forum

Are you sure you're running on the same channel?

The reporting of the XR9's do seem to be more accurate in most cases..

The problem with that is maybe it's confusion regarding the frequency selection or something similar. Maybe it's not a hardware problem... I'm hoping the moed has changed since everyone expressed concerns.

XR9 typically reports a higher noise floor than the SR9. That being said, a true/accurate noise floor of -96 is unheard of. The noise floor has most likely always been -83, the SR9 just reported it wrong.

I do have a couple locations that are pretty well sheltered that I have -95 to -97 noise floors reported by my XR9's... I actually do trust it due to the high level of forest and the lack of population...

Wish I had a spectrum analyzer to verify it...

You can get a 900mhz Motorola Canopy SM on ebay for around $300. Has a built-in Spectrum Analyzer that works very well.

I have a development in the middle of a forest and I still pick up 900mhz devices. I would never trust a reported noise floor. Always use a spectrum analyzer.

I'll have to check them out.... I *think* I've already heard this, but can you confirm that the Moto's analyzer does actually report generic noise? I know the mt's don't do a good job of reporting non-802.11 noise....

It is an actual spectrum analyzer.
