AVG stops hotspot

Tue Aug 05, 2008 8:16 pm

Has any one seen this? We have one customer who is running AVG Internet Security 8.0.152 (Anti-virus from Grisoft) and it seems to block the hotspot splash page. I do not see any place to actually stop AVG other than removing it. This is the licensed version, the free version allows you to stop AVG and or stop various parts of AVG.

Has anyone experienced this and what was your workaround? The splash page does not show up. In the address bar you can see the logon hotspot spalsh page trying to be directed towards it. But it just produces an "Address Not Found".

My idea is that AVG tries to do a reverse on the link and if the splash page is not a public accessible web page then it does not allow you to go forward. I guess the workaround would be to make a public accessible splash page. But I do not find this to be convenient at this time.

I have seen this occasionally. Usually, I find it is associated with a "home page redirect" blocker. If my users have anti-adware, and a home page besides "blank", most anti-adware programs block the redirect.

Well I know of a workaround. The problem is that it it is redirecting to a name that does not exist in the public world so a reverse lookup causes a problem. SO to make this all more universal and compatible I have removed the DNS entry for the hotspot. I did the following:

ip->Hotspot->Server Profile
On the General tab I removed the "DNS Name" value

This now makes the hotspot user instead go to:
example:
http://hotspot.desertgate.com/login?dst ... .blabhblah blah

But then go to:
http://192.168.1.1/login?dst=http:%3a....blabhblah blah

This stripping of the DNS Name is a great work around for proxy rDNS checkers. This will now not try to validate because it is just going to the IP address respectively. Ok so it is not as pretty but it works better and more reliable.

I hope this helps someone else out.
