N-Stream big performance gains

Wed Aug 20, 2008 12:35 am

Hi all,

I'm seeing 4 X throughput gains when using MT ROS N-Stream - I've been amazed by this for quite some time.

Is N-Stream a completely propriety and a one-of-a-kind system?

Is there any other similar type technology for other systems like openwrt and madwifi?

thanks,

D

What do you mean 4x??? Are you using 108 Mbps Super G(40 Mhz)? and getting throughput 200+ Mbps?

That's pretty optimistic of you :).

In reality I do see a 4 X increase in speed just by turning on N-Stream. An example: I have a 14KM link @ 5Ghz and if I have N-Stream off and I use the bandwidth tool via Winbox I get around 3Mbps one direction between a 333 and a 411. If I turn N-Stream on I get around 12Mbps.

This is a real advantage to Mikrotik ROS over other products (like openwrt, Ubiquity litestations, etc) but I'm keen to know if N-Stream technology (or very similar tecnology, etc) is available for other more generic (openwrt/madwifi, etc) systems

Lolz  12 Mbps is too low for 5 Ghz, use dish instead of panel or grid.
another thing is, Mikrotik is not gonna make any commercial for another companies. But as I know Ubiquity devices doesn't have more than one port, they can offer max. 25 mbit. I don't think openwrt/madwifi/ddwrt have a system like that.

I saw something similar. My ack timing was wrong, NStreme bypassed that problem, bandwidth went up.

Hi 0ldman,

I saw a big difference in speed from my pre-mikrotik (openwrt) days. I also though it was a timing problem but I really couldn't get any improvements with madwifi using the athctrl -d command (and also tried manually changing timing settings in the /proc/sys/dev/wifi0 directory but to no avail.

Actually Ubiquity now releases their own [binary] madwifi driver for cards like the XR5 and it has extra features like dynamic ack timing so thats good.

Still.. just turning N-Stream on and off between a pair of antennas is amazing.

i think you have the same problem seen as i :)
its the standard WLAN mode on 3.x. n-streme "repairs" the problem.

Question: To use N-stream do you have to have R52/h's on each routerboard or can you use any wireless card with N-stream.... Just curious -Jordan
