802.11A on WLM200N5-26 misreporting signal strength

Wed Nov 25, 2009 7:39 pm

I just replaced an R5H with a new Compex WLM200N5-26 card in anticipation of moving to N on this link. For now it's 802.11a. The other end is still an R5H. Both sides running RouterOS 4.2.

The rcv signal strength reported on the new card is -83. On the R5H side, it is -50. Cards are linking up at 54/54M. It seems the side with the new compex card is under-reporting the received signal. Is there a missing conversion here?

Max TX power also shows as 20dbm, where the spec sheet shows 26.

thanks,

Thanks for trying out Compex's products.

As to the receive signal strength detected from both side are widely different, that's may due to the different algorithm in RSSI between the 802.11a cards and 802.11n cards. Have you tried this with two 802.11n cards?

The WLM200N5-26 card is calibrated to deliver 26 dBm (per chain) while its power setting indicates 20 dBm. This is because certain drivers (not MK's) do not allow users to set output power greater than 20 dBm.

It actually did even out when I put a matching card on the other side. Both are still in "A" mode until Mikrotik gets nstreme working for 802.11n

What's your matching card, another WLM200N5-26 card? and how you lay the two antennas with each card? Both are vertical-oriented or horizontal-oriented or one vertical-oriented and the other horizontal-oriented?
