AP GPS Synchronization

Sat Mar 27, 2010 12:52 am

This is a feature I'm sure many have noticed on Motorola radios.

Does GPS synchronization have ANY relevance in the world of either 802.11 or NStreme?

I am guessing GPS synch can only when you have a pair of co-located AP's who can hear each other and are using either the same or adjacent channels?

Seems to me that if you have directional antennas with the required horizontal and vertical separation and you place each AP on non-adjacent channels there should be no problem.

If someone could share with us all about the finer points of colocating AP's that'd be excellent, perhaps it could even be added to the wireless FAQ?

Most commercial manufacturers offer co-location features such as syncing.

It would have relevance with MikroTik if it were supported.

The benefit is that you establish a known timed network where all the APs (not necessarily on only 1 tower), all transmit at the same time. This eliminates one radio from transmitting while another is receiving, resulting in the receiver not hearing the CPE. It also allows much denser deployments with channel reuse, even having multiple sectors on the same frequency on the same tower.

This has been requested before, and it a feature that would be incredibly nice to have from MikroTik.
