newb question: RB450G + 802.11n AP - which AP?

Tue May 25, 2010 11:25 pm

sorry if this is too much of a noob question but, here we go:

I am about to purchase an RB450G to replace a linksys WRT610N w/ DDWRT that is just giving me too many problems.
I would like to know if there is a recommended hardware list of indoor access points that work well with the RB450?
As of now I was considering something like the Engenius EAP9550 but I have no experience with it, only that I know engenius generally have a fair reputation.
Does Mikrotik offer some AP (indoor!) that works well?
cheers :D

You can look at RouterBOARD 4xx series (RouterBOARD 433xx) for access point,
http://routerboard.com/
there are different combinations for Ethernet/MiniPCI(wireless) ports.

right, I know the 4xx series is what I am after. Actually I've decided on the 450g due to its gigabit switch ports.
but I do not want the wifi-antenna located in the same physical area as the router, because the router will be in a wiring closet that is largely blocked by metal shelving. So I am looking for a high quality, low maintenance AP with adjustable Tx power that is known to operate well with the RB4xx series. Anyone have any specific recommendations? thanks again

why "Work with RB450" when you can replace it with RB433 or RB493 if you need more ports. Only one device is better than many

exactly, the reasons for the 450g are the gigabit enet ports, and the ability to locate the APs in a different physical location. any recommendations?

Use EAP-9550's - Engenuis AP - they are great. Personally perfer EAP-3660 or the new M36's (these are only G rated but working amazingly).

Do you know if the Tx power is adjustable on these APs?
I don't want them blasting at 600mw in my small apartment. I would like to lower them down to 40-50mw if possible.
Couldn't find that info on the Engenius site.
Thanks!

Yes you can adjust it but its low, med, high.
But it works very well - you'll be impressed with the quality and strenght. I think the information is in the manual of the units.
