Anyone experimented with the new Qualcomm Gobi WWAN

Tue Sep 14, 2010 11:37 pm

Gobi2000™ is a WWAN datacard implemented in a PCI Express® full size (Type F1) mini card
form factor. Does anyone know if it will work with RB?

It appears to becoming very popular in the US, has no one ever heard or dealt with this device and RB?

sorry, have not tested, but if you can borrow it, plug it in and make supout.rif file in latest RouterOS v5 version and we might be able to add support (if it's not already working) .

I have e-mailed in a copy to support@mikrotik.com. The files is from a RB411U with a Qualcomm Gobi2000 Chipset card manufactured by HON HAI Precision Industry Co. Ltd.

I have tried to load the the firmware files using /gobi .. /Gobi .. and /firmware/gobi .. /firmware/Gobi. Apparently the firmware files are discovered upon reboot and something tries to happen but once the router finishes the boot stage the Ethernet interface disappears and the only way to access the board is via console cable. I don't believe the firmware has done anything beneficial yet as it doesn't create a port for the Gobi2000 but it's progress.

I have also attached the firmware images that I have used. They should be the Sprint CDMA EvDO images if I read the support file correctly.

If you connect via console cable and remove the firmware images from the files list the Ethernet interface is restored after reboot.

Happy Holidays and A Very Merry Christmas!

Good News!

After banging my head against what I thought was an IRQ issue with the Gobi2000 and the Ethernet Controller I have discovered that my problem was a bad FW image. When I ran a CRC check against it the sum was incorrect. I tracked down another version of the Firmware from a different location and tossed it up on the router.

The Gobi2000 is working in Router OS v5.0rc5 on RB411U with FW 2.20 (not upgraded yet)...

routerboard: yes
model: "411U"
serial-number: "1EE301905804"
current-firmware: "2.20"
upgrade-firmware: "2.28"

[admin@MikroTik] /port> pri
Flags: I - inactive
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto
1 Gobi2000 2 auto

I have yet to make a data call but all indicators are point to a successful initialization of the cards itself. I have run through the AT Command Set and all of the commands that do not require an active carrier are working. I was unable to access GPS information, but I think that is because the Linux Kernel used in the Router OS does not have the patch that enables the other two (2) composite devices on this card. If the Mikrotik guys are interested in getting this working there is more information on the kernel patch here.

I am taking the card down to Sprint tomorrow to have it activated.

If anyone wants the firmware images for this card just let me know and I will get you the links.

It is way after hours here in the office so I will post back with more information tomorrow and I will create a howto for the Mikrotik Wiki.

Cheers & 73!

Firmware Images: All Major Carriers

Do me a massive favor and go easy on my T1 for this box. If you only download the firmware images that you need for your carrier you will go a long way towards helping everyone else out when they try to grab thiers.

Firmware Images:
http://mail.cdmwireless.com/gobi2000/im ... -firmware/

amss.mbn (firmware stage 1)
apps.mbn (firmware stage 2)
UQCN.mbn (firmware stage 3) - includes configuration and carrier specific settings)

Not all carriers use all three (3) files.

Firmware Documentation: (Example: AT Command Set and SDK)
http://mail.cdmwireless.com/gobi2000/docs

Thanks,

Running RouterOS 5.0rc7 with FW 2.29 + Gobi 2000 HP un2420 card.

I've uploaded the 3x firmware files, connected via serial cable but not sure how to upload the firmware?
My ether1 stays active, the Gobi2000 is found under Resources -> IRQ but no ports are allocated.

Am I missing some details or should one do the firmware upgrade on a PC instead of Mikrotik?

OK, placed the files under the /firmware directory as per /port firmware print

Now I get the following, still 0 ports for Gobi 2000 card.

[admin@MikroTik] /port> print
Flags: I - inactive
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto
[admin@MikroTik] /port> ..
[admin@MikroTik] > port
[admin@MikroTik] /port> firm
[admin@MikroTik] /port firmware> print

action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send a supout file (13)
[admin@MikroTik] /port firmware>
[admin@MikroTik] /port firmware> print

I've been struggling with this for some hours now....

Think the problem is related to the fact that my model is an HP un2420 - surely there are some indications / flags to ensure it can only be loaded on an HP notebook?

My ether1 also disappears when loading the files under /firmware/. Also tried extracting from other .EXE file but get the same problem.
Card remains on 0 ports.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm officially stuck now and have 3x of these cards ;-(

Can you please check your Vendor / Device ID under Resources -> USB

My IDs are as follows...
Vendor ID: 0x03f0
Device ID: 0x241d

{USB_DEVICE(0x03f0, 0x241d)}, /* HP un2420 Gobi QDL Device */
{USB_DEVICE(0x03f0, 0x251d)}, /* HP un2420 Gobi Modem Device */

OK, I've done it.

Actually quite simple - the HP / lenovo versions have other drivers / firmware than your normal Gobi 2000.

Downloaded the actual HP un2420 driver, extracted the files, another extract and then some searching for the correct files.

And then magically a ppp-out1 device appears, nice!!

Data channel = 1
Info channel = 1

I've also deselected the "Dial-on-demand" as this has caused me some headaches in the past.

everything works 100%, except my Band selection doesn't work but it automatically switches to WCDMA after a few seconds.

Took me a couple of hours to get everything sorted, but it works on VodaCom, South-Africa. bought it as it supports 900Mhz WCDMA which I will test in a while.

get the windows drivers for your exact model
Install, extract and use MSI tools to get the following 2x files
apps.mbn, amms.mbn, UQCN.mbn

There might be several options, there you need to do some googling to check which files linked up with which providers etc.

I have the generic UMTS driver for HP N2420 model should you be interested.

MikroManagement

hi again..
i've read your post and i have no idea how to extract generic drivers from .exe file, even i dont know how to upload it on routerboard.

this devise appears from usb print view, but i can't use it as interface... i read also that i have to upload gobi 1000 firmware through this usb port, but how? :(

i think first of all i need to upload firmware to the HP un2400 Mobile Broadband Module (it uses gobi 1000 chipset as ii;ve read)
and after that it will appears in routeros interface list.

or do i need just drivers , upload it to my routerboard just reboot and thats all? i'm confused..

or give me som tutorials or key words to find out more info and solve problem...

been a while, but here goes as far as I can remember. First of all, there are no generic drivers, you need to get the Windows drivers (.exe) file for your exact model. Mine was a HP un2420 so I had to get this specific driver package.

Use 7-zip or similar to open / extract this file. Take the biggest file in this archive, open again with 7-zip (most likely an msi file). Keep on with process until you find the 3x files as mentioned earlier.

The archive I've downloaded had several files named as GUIDs, used the file sizes and some googling to link them. Every installation will have several files as per different network providers.

From here, just upload these files to Mikrotik. /firmware folder. (I used normal FTP)
Reboot router, wait a few seconds after reboot. Device should make some serial ports now under /ports print

If your ether0 disappears you know the files you loaded are not the correct ones. Remember that these are firmware files and that a shutdown is better than a reboot as the firmware gets loaded once per power-on.

Hope this helps

Hi temuri426..

Did you come right with the firmware upgrade on UN2400 card? I purchased a Sierra Wireless MC8792v recently and tried using that to connect to Vodacom 3G but to my despair the card does not want to route any of my traffic through the internet. It does however attach itself to the vodacom network and I am however able to ping other addresses. I'm trying to sort the compatibility issue out with mikrotik support, but in the interim I would like to use the UN2400 to connect. I removed it from my HP probook, but I'm unsure about which files to upload under the firmware directory. I see your also located in RSA, so did you also use Vodacom for you 3G network? if so, which 3 files did you upload to the router? I've downloaded sp41365.exe driver file from HP as per MikrotikManagement's instructions. Could you guide me through the process you followed...

Thanks

Hi ZioN,

unfortunately i could't find exact drivers for UN2400, so i stoped resolving this problem , it was head ache, time wasting..

If you can ping another hosts in the network it means that everything works ok, you have only routing issues.

Hi temuri426

Sorry for the late reply. I eventually sent the mini-pci-e card back to sierra for a firmware upgrade. That seemed to make things on my board more stable. You were right. It turns out that i had basic routing issues. In fact, network issues. Me trying so hastily to get the link up and running, I overlooked on of the most basic networking bases. I forgot to setup a network (DHCP-Server->Network) for my board :( . Therefore, the nodes could not route any internet traffic (even if my routing was sound).

Sometimes it just takes some patients and covering all the bases. :)

Hello,
i habe some Routerboard 411U with Firmware 2.29 and Qualcomm Gobi 2000 but the UMTS Modem does not work,
under resource usb i can fond the Gobi 2000 but nothing other works with the card. I have testing with Firmware 4.16 and Firmware 5.5.
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 2:1 RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 2:2 Qualcomm Incorporated Qualcomm Gobi 2000 480 Mbps
2 1:1 RB400 OHCI 12 Mbps
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto
i have download the Driver from SierraWirelessGobi2000HSUSBMobileBroadband, because if i extract the HP Driver i can not found the Firmware images files .
It is possible that someone can send me the firmware from the HP driver ?
The HP Driver only installs if found the Gobi200 Card

Thx
