Answers:
RouterOS runs on most standard PCs
(I suggest Intel CPU and chipset for stability and compatibility)
RouterBoard 500 is a hardware platform developed by MikroTik for RouterOS. (It also runs a version of Linux)..
RouterOS will run as an AP with Lvl5 License.
Hardware for AP is baisic. You will need a PC (or RB 200 or 500) and a PrismII or Atheros basid wireless card (with a Lvl5 License).

As far as "installing ON an access point", No it is "PC" or (Routerboard based)

Have Fun, and Welcome !

Not the right place to ask this sort of stuff but well…
Range is quite substantial and it depends on Transmitting power of your interface, Cable loses and connector losses, Antenna gain, type of environment i.e. over the sea, humidity, so on and so forth…

There is not a definitive answer to what you are asking but it is common in the community I belong that we set links at 10Km and even more with 24dBi directional antennas for the 2.4GHz band and similar 29-31dBi antennas in the 5GHz band… That is with atheros CM9 Interfaces and without breaking the law… Prism perform better in the 2.4GHz band whereas Atheros are flexible and mostly suited to the 5GHz Band…

There is that a bit clearer now… ???
