Missing dBs between ROS 4.11 and 5.0rc2 w/ SR71-15

Wed Oct 27, 2010 8:11 pm

I do not understand why it has to be so hard to get the wonderful SR71-15 card to work right with ROS. It has been an ongoing issue with ROS and SR71-15 with respect to power levels. Here is a new chapter.

Today I updated a 36mi single-chain 802.11n PtP link from 4.11 to rc2. Power level dropped from -58 (SNR:58db) to -67 (SNR:43db). When I revert back to 4.11, my power levels and the SNR improves back to previous levels. And to be perfectly honest, I don't even believe that 4.11 was giving me all the power it should be to begin with but when I manually increase the TX Power values my CCQ goes haywire.

Why does this happen? Has anyone else observed this issue?

ppl at mk will tell you that its a ubiquiti problem ...
and the ppl at ubiquiti will telll you that its a mk problem .....
its a complete circus about it ....
there's more cards from ubiquiti where the problem continues....
eg: sr71-12 .....

At the point I can lose 10dBs of signal strength and 17dBs of my SNR just switching between ROS versions I think it's pretty clear who's driving the clown car on this issue.

Checking power levels on system you just upgraded is not the most precise thing to do.

1) Check power settings on opposite end of the link (on each side those are different values)

2) There are several options replaced with new option and also there are new options - so you need to do all your link tuning from beginning - i usually just go with backup and wireless card setting complete wipe and start over.

Sorry, but if you are migrating to new mayor release, just pressing "Upgrade" button will not be enough.

plese make the screenshots also from the wireless status tab and also check if the noise floor is the same in both versions.

Hey Uldis, I'll try to get those screenshots up soon. Thanks!

The only way to be sure the levels have dropped 10db is to check with a spectrum analyzer, just accepting what winbox says could be misleading?

Are the screenshots with 5.02 both ends ?

You really want to see a increase in db between ROS versions - try 3.3 or 3.28 vs v4.x and v5.x.
I'm forced to run my entire MT network on v3.30 for all 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz and all 900mhz on v3.28.
I've tried every config possible and not one works. I have tried all new versions and not one works.
PtMP drops appear where there were none on 5.8 BHs and CPEs stop passing traffic on 2.4 APs.
I use exclusively SR2/XR2 & SR5/XR5 and NO SR9 but all XR9's mounted on RB433/411/600.
When one Version works and the next doesn't - that's a "no brainer" deduction! Especially with those kinds of db differences! Even more so across the entire network.
Shame on you guys for saying otherwise! Best be honest!

To top it off - if you put rc3 on a RB1xx or RB5xx series board - the 2.4 doesn't work.
Of course I decided to try out the new RC and forgot about the last time I put anything over 3.30 on an older board.
Drove out to those towers and low and behold - I could not make a connection - It would come up for 2secs and drop and disappear.
I love my job!

After reading this post I noticed the same behaviour on r52N and r52hn

Did some upgrades to v5 RC 1, & 3 ended up rolling back to 4,12 gained 5/6 Db

Surely the later releases should improve signal strength

I always read when 5.0 Beta1 came out, that people saw a 10db INCREASE in signal strengths, and around 10Mbps of increased TCP throughput. I have seen the opposite. Worse signals, worse throughput, WTH Mikrotik?

If I stick a pair of Bullet M5HP's on my PtP link dishes, on the same frequency using with MT, I see a signal in the low -50's compared to high -60's with MT.

I want Ubiquiti signal strengths on MT! I love the MT low latency and reliability. I know Mikrotik can be better with signals, the SR71 cards are meant to handle it.

Just tried v4.12 and all my PtoMP connections had a small decrease in db.
Several of my 5.8 omni BHs started dropping connections - connections that have been stable since that last time I tried to upgrade.

PS - Back to 3.30

PS2 - On a small note - some of my PtoP 5.8 BHs that have next to zero noise interference - the v5.0rc2 really has increased the throughput dramatically. I just wish I could use it on all my systems.
