Looking about "IDU" (wireless CPE).

Tue Jun 07, 2011 1:34 am

Hi mikrotik community,
i'm looking about a single and simple device to install as IDU (indoor unit) in customer's home. I want to replace passive poe and power supply because customers have a lot of problem with these devices: many times disconnect cables, many times connect cables in the wrong way, many times lost poe under desk, many time break components...in conclusion two pieces and three cables are realy too!
But the major difficult is during telephone support. Today we lost too time to help customers to check their installation: find poe, check antenna cable, check lan calbe, check power supply, check ethernet load...
For customer downtime is a source of stress, for us is extra work (and stress).

I'd like to have a single device with these features:
- Strong PoE and strong power supply in a single box, better if is colored
- Ethernet grounding (like ubiquiti or better)
- Three leds: one for power, one for lan ethernet, one for cpe's ethernet (like alvarion).
- Power and antenna cables are more difficult to disconnect (like motorola).
- Obviously, cheap. :)

So, customer will interact only with one-single-port, telephone calls will last few minutes or seconds (just find the big box and "read" the leds) and everyone lived happily ever after.

Anybody know if exist something similar?
I'm going to talk with a producer, anyone is interested?

Another solution is have the best integrated device indoor for wisp, with these features:
-4 ethernet port switch
-1 poe ethernet port (for ODU)
-1 wifi 802.11n
-1 voip fxs port
-grounding for odu.
All-in-one solution for all common use. (like all big telco)

WISPs need rapid deploy, rapid customer support and better performace.
Today all accessories seem bad quality, designed not for all kind of people .
We need to grow, or we may go out of business, but we must to decrease the support requests for common issues.

Hot glue your cables into your equipment if unplugged equipment is that much of an issue. :)

i think you're going to struggle to find a ready made solution for your problem, you will most likely have to create one yourself for your specific criteria.

The problem with an all in one is of course, cost. something like what your talking about would initially cost thousands to engineer, and hundreds to manufacture. even if you were piecing off the shelf

components and using a common enclosure.

The hot glue creates more problems than it solves.

I do not think it's just my specific problem, I think it is a standard condition of all the wisps.
I only need a good power supply that limits the problems and the stupidity of the customer as I said above, and speeds up the diagnostic fault.

I do not think it needs many investments to realize this device ... will cost a bit more sure, but I do not think that it is difficult to achieve.
