Two AP's, wds and VAP with WDS

Thu Jun 09, 2011 10:59 pm

Hello to all,

I'd like to setup two hotspots on one hardware radio. There are two RB's in network (main and repeater) with one radio card each, connected via AP bridge and wds, bridged into bridge1.
I have added VAP wlan on both RB's, added WDS under VAP, bridged into bridge2.
I have running sign "R" in interface window. I can ping RB's from one to another.
I have two registration entries in wireless tables.

But, when somebody connects to VAP interface, I get loop on bridge2.

Is it possible at all to have two wds system with one radio by using Virtual AP's?

Best regards,

Petar.

Why this double link?! xDDD setup connect and acces list to avoid this double connection.

I want to recomend you something:

I used lots of virtual APs in a lot of cases, and I'm looking for a strange bug with Virtual AP interfaces, but not much time to find it.

You have to use multiple VAPs, and dont use the real interface.
The main interface has to setup with no default autentication and not default forward.

Then you can use the 2 VAPs or more to make the whole config.

I dont recomend to ise the main interface and the VAP at the same time.

Hi

thx, interesting tip about WLAN and VAP interface, I'll try it.

But, I'didn't understand how to create two wds interfaces on one wlan connection?

I need to transport two networks over one wlan using AP bridges on both sides.

Best regards,

Petar

Hi,

you can use 2 ip ranges in one interface.
you can create 2 virtualAP and one WDS interface for each of these virtualAP.
you can create one virtualAP with many WDS interfaces
you can assign IPs to a WDS interface or virtualAP too

make a detailed diagram with hardware and networks and IPs of what you need and I give you a solutions with the config.

Hi Martin,

setup is used for hotspot service. I have to add additional promo hotspot SSID on all radio cards.

Here it is:
one side (main one):
rb 433, 3xradio card, all AP Bridge wireless mode, all bridged into one bridge (wlan's and wds) where hotspot is running
wds on one WLAN for link to 2nd router

another side:
rb 433, 3xradio card, all AP Bridge wireless mode, all bridged into one bridge (wlan's and wds)
wds on one WLAN for link to 1st router

All running ok.

Task:
add VAP's on both side with promo SSID where 2nd hotspot will be running

I added promo VAP's with new bridge and new IP range on both sides, I added WDS under those VAP's. I got wireless registration table entry (two, one for main wlan and 2nd on VAP - I'd like to avoid it) All was running ("R" sign), I can ping new IP range from both sides.

But, when somebody connects to promo VAP I'm getting loop on VAP/WDS interface until I disable interface.

So, advice how to "tunnel" two networks with AP Bridge on two sideds would be great.

Thx, Petar

Why all with these wds interfaces?

who are the customers of your network? which type of customer?

Hi Martin,

I don't know any other way to have wireless distribution of hotspot service than with WDS (both radios are AP bridge). There is one main AP with ADSL and two more that act as repeaters.

Users are unknown people with laptops, iPads... They connect to hotspot and use internet access after authorization.

Best regards,

Petar

Configure as follows:

wlan master: NO configuration. Avoid connections here. No default auth and no default forward

create 1 VirtualAP (wlan2) and WDS in wlan2
create 1 virtual AP wlan3 and configure it as apbridge to give service to the users.
configure hotspot in wlan3

The repeater will have "same" interfaces and you have to connect the 2 wds interfaces of wlan2.. HERE IS THE UNIQUE LINK.

If you want that the main AP will validate ALL the hotspots users, then bridge all the network and create only this hotspot. If you want more hotspots you can create more VAPs... Then you need to create default gateways and routes if needed.

Hi Martin,

so, I have to configure one physical wlan (hidden SSID, no authenticate, no forwarding) and several VAP's:
a) first hotspot on main AP
- VAP1 with WDS1 link - hidden SSID1 for link1 only?, authenticate, forwarding ok?
- VAP2 for users to connect to 1st hotspot

b) 2nd hotspot on main AP
- VAP3 with 2nd WDS2 link - hidden SSID2 for link2 only?, authenticate, forwarding ok?
- VAP4 for users to connect to 2nd hotspot

Same on the 2nd RB.

This way, I'll have 2 links on one radio and two entries in wireless registration table.

Hotspot validation is only on main AP, so I must have 2 bridges, for each hotspot service one with adequate ports.

I'll test in the evening and let you know the outcome...

Thx for help so far...

but.. why 2 links¿?

If you have 1 wds link.. all the info can use the same link...

please, make a graphic description to explain this 2 links... : /

You don't need the 2 wds links....!

Make a picture of what you need, including the IPs

Hi Martin,

rb1
SSID1: HotSpot - bridge 1, ip: 10.5.60.1/24
SSID2: Promo - bridge promo: 10.10.10.1/24

rb2:
SSID1: HotSpot - bridge 1, ip: 10.5.60.2/24
SSID2: Promo - bridge promo: 10.10.10.2/24
layout.png
For both hotspots authorization is on rb1.

2nd link is for 2nd hotspot bridge (different authorization, different IP & DHCP range).

Or, there is another way to have two bridges use the same WDS?

Petar.

umm.. try the double link and keep the 2 links in different bridges, only to try, but I think you'll have problems with it.

you can use vlans for example. I never made this exact config.. but it must be done. I have 3 days of holidays this week and I will think a solution.

hi....

i have test something before, but not sure it will help you or not.
the setup is very straight forward..

the both end is the same setting..
1) create a bridge with name "bridge1"
2) add bridge port "wlan1 and ether1"

in wireless card setting is..
1) mode : ap-bridge
2) hide ssid: no
3.1) wds-mode: dynamic-mesh
3.2) wds-default bridge: bridge1

then it will work for as what you want.

perhaps you can make the link without IPs and configure only the IPs in interfaces with hotspots. you can make this with wds.. try it.

Did you find a solution ? I have similar problem. I want to add new wan connection to my server and the send signal back to customer, so I want to send 2 networks over 1 wds

Image

Links are good quality on 54 MBit cards ( 802.11a ) , transfer of internet and to customer would be 6 MB ( x 2 ).

Yes,

I did find a solution. I've used vpls tunnels, ldp interfaces on WDS. WDS is not in any bridge, just vpls tunnels.

check out this topic, that was helpfull:

Thanks , . I created 2 networks and 2 bridges inside each mikrotik

Bridge 1: ether1, vpls1 ( vpls1 on wds1 )
Bridge 2: ether2, wds1

And in my test envirotment it looks like :

internet -> (MIK1 ether 1,vlps1) -> (MIK2 vlps1,ether1) -> router -> (MIK2 ether2,wds1) -> (MIK1 wds1,ether2) -> client

And client has internet and other clients connected to router have internet.
