Wireless in a hidro tunnel

Fri Sep 30, 2011 1:18 pm

Hello,

we have to cover 350 meters of a 2,5 meters of diameter in a tunnel of a dam reservoir that generates hydro-electric power.

This tunnel has a minitrain that runs at 5km/h with a camera (5Mbps TCP) and we need to link the camera to the outside part of the tunnel.

Any similar project?

I'm thinking in doing with 2.4GHz will be better than 5GHz. what's your opinion? The tunnel has 4 or 5 direction changes, isn't straight.

I think 3 APs with 2 pannels each will be ok. One at 50 meters, one at 155 and one at 275.

thanks

350m isn't that bad. I'd probably give 900MHz a try and just use one access point.

Assuming it it a concrete tube with an unknown amount of rebar, the amount of directional change and at what distance is the question.

You may be able to succeed with a single 2.4 ap. You mentioned placing up to 3 aps.... so you can run power some how, on the interior of the tube? I take it this isn't a bypass but an inspection tunnel?

If you only have 1 shot to do it, over saturate, otherwise, install and test to verify performance.

If you have the ability to install cable in the tunnel you could adopt a leaky cable system. I don't have direct experience with this, but I did do some work for a mining company that used it extensively.

Check this for a decent read...
