PoE over ethernet extender - could I expect any problems?

Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:38 pm

Hi,

I have Cat5 ethernet cable which is 25m long and would like to extend it for additional 10m before connecting it to SXT. I would use something like this

http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs-im ... alers.html

So the configuration would be

Power source - 25m ethernet cable - extender - 10m ethernet cable - SXT.

Could I expect any problem with power or everything should be fine? I suppose there should be no problem, cause I see PoE works for 100m range, and extender is behaving like wire.

It should work but you are adding 2 more points of failure. It is usually always better to have just 1 ethernet cable. Is the coupler inside? If it is outside then weather will kill you after a few months of exposure. Is it where it can't be triped on disconect?

In summery it is better to replace with 1 wire that is longer.

Coupler is inside, so there should be no problem with that. Basically we are replacing some older equipment, the cable is already there and we don't want to complicate with the new cable cause it is in the office space which is not designed very friendly. So we will just extend the cable with coupler. It is not where it can be tripped or disconnected.

I use these on all my cpe and have extended cables with them when in a situation like yours.

They come in utp/stp.
Only problem I've had with them is the squirrels have chewed the cable and taken them.
I guess they thought it was a nut
