Upgrading 411GL to 5.20 locks whole board! Can't use now!

Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:49 pm

transferred 5.20 to 411GL board loaded with 5.11. System>Reboot = no reboot and 100% CPU! Hard-reboot doesn't fix, removing firmware from files doesn't fix, can barely log back into it now with it "Disconnecting", looks like 5.20 permanently corrupted the 411GL!!!! Even tried hard-reset.

I have a ticket with Mikrotik open. But BE WARNED!!!!

If you never rebooted the board after downloading it to your files it did not corrupt the board because it didn't have a chance to install. Sounds like you might have a different problem. How are you connecting to the router? Have you tried to netinstall?

I upgraded it like I do every other 100's of boards I've done. Drag to files, let it transfer, then when done transferring, click reboot. Only difference this time, is it didn't reboot after telling it too. CPU locked in at 100%. I gave it 10 minutes, then hard-rebooted it. It let me log in long enough to see the package was still there. But it then becomes really unstable and kicks me out, and reboots on its own often.

I even tried another board, brand-new. Same thing. Now its ruined. I guess I could try "net install" on my 3rd board, but there obviously is a HUGE problem!!!

UPDATE:

Going from 5.11 to 5.20 DOES NOT WORK. I pulled out a 3rd board, and took it up in "baby steps", going from 5.11 > 5.15 > 5.19 > 5.20 and it worked. However, Mikrotik downloads page only allows you to download 4.17 and the latest (5.20). Luckily I had older 5.X versions on my computer!

Question is now, how do I fix the other 2 boards!

A netinstall should fix the boards.

netinstall. what a pain. installed, followed directions, no luck. these GL's don't have a COM port. and it says to "hold reset button down until LED's go off". which LED's? there's NINE LED's that light up. they ALL don't go off after a certain amount of time... I tried holding it for over 1 minute..

I did a factory reset by grounding out the 2 1/2 circles on the board. That at least let me log back into it, transferred 5.15, system > reboot > CPU 100% and board locks up.

Telnet = connection lost after login
Terminal from winbox = won't start

Before upgrade, make sure you have enough free space in your device. Check the "System resources" menu. It's possible that you had too many packages installed, or had enabled logs, proxy cache or other features that use disk space.

If flash was filled up with logs, or someting else, only Netinstall will revive the device. When talking about LEDs, we usually mean the User LED, which is next to power jack or first ethernet port. Only one LED starts flashing when you hold the reset button, that is the one you need to watch. If you can't find it, simply hold the button for more than 30 seconds and then let go.

In new versions from v6 we have a protection where this will not happen even if the disk is full, it will simply not install anything if there is not enough free space.

Normis, these were BRAND-NEW boards! They weren't filled up with files or anything...

Janis from Mikrotik support just said "check the log to see why it didn't upgrade!"

I'm still stuck with 2 boards I can't use! Tried booting with reset button pushed in for 30 seconds, no luck with "netinstall". Should I just ship these things back?!?!?

I really don't feel this is my fault. All I did was upgrade the firmware!!! I'm not a newbie to this, I did everything to procedure. The problem is, at least with the 411GL's, you CANNOT upgrade it from 5.11 to 5.20, it permanently cripples the board. Can anyone verify this on other boards? Going from 5.11 to 5.20?

The same thing happened to me with two new SXT devices I just purchased. After upgrading the firmware (5.19 in my case), the devices would no longer respond in a normal fashion. They would respond to ping once in a while, but nothing more. Rebooting didn't solve anything.

To solve the issue, I opened up the units and held the reset button to clear up their config. They have been working fine ever since. Note that they both had relatively virgin configs when I performed the upgrade.

^^ there's 2 forms of resetting with Mikrotik. Did you ground out the 2 half-circle pins? Or did you hold the "reset" button?

I've tried both. Resetting the config all the way to the point where when I log back in, it pops open the window saying if you want to keep or remove the config.

That makes it useable, HOWEVER, you cannot upgrade OR even downgrade firmware. You can move the firmware to the files folder. I even thought I would reboot it by terminal instead of the buttons. Nope. Open terminal = blank screen, 100% CPU

I held the reset button for roughly 8 seconds. When it booted, it asked me if I wanted to keep or remove the default config. I've had the devices in production for a couple of weeks (version 5.19) and they are running smoothly. I did not try 5.20 yet by fear of running in to the same problem as I ran into with upgrading to version 5.19.

Re: Upgrading 411GL to 5.20 locks whole board! Can't use now

UPDATE:

I finally was able to just log back into it, after it was plugged in on my desk for 3 hours. Discovery. The CPU FINALLY died down a little, and I noticed the CPU said 100Mhz!!!

WHY IS THE CPU SET TO 100MHz!!! I went into routerboard>settings>changed back to 680Mhz, reboot, and that seemed to fix it!

So, for some reason, with 5.11 (who knows what others), when upgrading to 5.20, it cripples some things, one of which was setting the CPU down to 100Mhz.

Hope this helps, Mikrotik!

8-28-12 UPDATE:

So I went to go use the 2 411GL boards I thought were fixed. They both are running 5.20 with latest routerboard firmware, AND I fixed the CPU to 680mhz. Configuring each board with SR71-15 cards, bridge wds and station wds, boards constantly lock up and reboot for no reason. Log said "watchdog timeout" one of the times, but I never enabled it!

Common lockups happen when applying wireless settings, such as enabling WDS > apply > = lose connection to routerboard, then hear it beep as its rebooting.

ABSOLUTE JUNK!! What happened Mikrotik??? Sure, I can buy a good 411AH, but it doesn't have GB ports, now I'm stuck with these GL boards which have been crap!

I'm trying to cram a 435G into a ARC integrated enclosure now, because I simply can't use the 411GL boards. It won't look nice, but it will have to do.

No help with this thread, and no help from support email from Mikrotik! Wow. Clearly isn't an issue on my end, but with firmware or the GL boards themselves.

After a long frustrating time at the tower, I ended up using the RB/435G and it worked FINE.

RB/433GL? What a disappointment. I am even more pissed that Mikrotik ignores the issue. These things need to be fixed or discontinued.

Here is a video, be warned, it may be offensive to some people!

Is anyone still having issues with upgrading GL devices to v5.20? please send your serial number to support, and we will try to figure out what happened.

next time before you decide to get rid of some MT equipment do me a favor and leave a note on the forum. Maybe someone will be ready to pay for the shipping to get the device

^^ why would you want something that doesn't work?

it was a cheap GL board. sorry, I was just SO pissed about this issue. I love Mikrotik and won't stop using them, I'm just so frustrated with these new GL boards lately.

433GL - loose about 20-30mbps TCP on my multi-link PtP's

411GL - can't really use at all! upgrade from 5.11 to 5.20 = FAIL
- take up in steps to 5.20, works, but then put a SR71-15 card in it, and configure it for WDS bridge, and good luck! software locks up and reboots while configuring!!!

you know, I've programmed 100's of Mikrotiks in the past 7 years. I have over 60 of them out in the field just used for PtP's. I've NEVER seen any problems like this before, its not just me, I had 3 brand new ones on my desk and everyone one did the same thing.

I know what you mean, I've just bricked a routerboard tonight with 5.20. The only person whom I will send it to is my distributor. Thank's god it's just test equipment.

EDIT: ROS 5.15 was removed from the download site after it turned out that there is a bug which stops wireless traffic. Don't know why 5.20 is still available for download - maybe it's just the hardware?

Oh I'll be sending the other 2 back, and I'll just reimburse my employer for the "crunched" one. It was a good relief though..

We are unable to repeat the issue. Please give us some more info:

1. Serial number
2. RouterOS version before upgrading
3. RouterBOOT version before upgrading
4. Method of upgrade (FTP/Winbox/Netinstall etc)
