WISP redesign challenge

Wed Nov 21, 2012 4:42 pm

I recently inherited a small WISP redesign project. When I say small I mean it. I am talking 1 HQ/Tower and 3 branch towers supporting less than 500 customers. The current design is just one large bridged layer 2 network. Now I have been tasked with coming up with a plan for migrating to a routed layer 3 design. My first thought was it is so small and working as-is so why bother. Kind of like "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ideaology. Anyone have any input on this or been through a similar project?

What hardware are you using for the client/ap side?

It is a mixture of cambium, mikrotik, and ubiquiti.

Whatever u do, consider it just might grow. A while ago there was a pretty nice presentation on WISP setup on MUM. U could use it as a guide: http://mum.mikrotik.com/presentations/E ... leeman.pdf

Thank you denis, that pdf was a good read. I am really leaning toward the need to move to a routed design now just for the expansion flexibility it offers.

That pdf is pretty much outdated. Bridging stuff with eoip is the thing of the past. You need a routed design (seperate concetrators) and/or MPLS (if you want to use a single PPP concentrator)

Hi,

Have you thinking in a MPLS/VPLS redesign?

Greetings.

David.
