WiFi Hotspot for GuestHouse/Hotel via RouterOS vs Untangle

Mon Apr 08, 2013 3:26 pm

Currently I have 4 Draytek AP700 Air-stations that open ( no encryption or authorization ) but an untangle Server ( Desktop PC ) that does a Captive Portal Page Authorization to allow traffic to the current Router/Gateway Draytek Vigor3900.

All that is required is a nice looking Captive Portal Page / Custom and each room has its own password which can allow multiple devices with a 24 hour time limit till next time they have to login viua the Captive Portal page.

I was thinking the RouterOS Cloud Core Router CCR1036-12G-4s would then replace both the Untangle server ( which is a huge power hog ) and the Draytek Vigor3900

Additional Bonus would be ADSL bonding as I have 3 ADSL2+ lines ( to far for VDSL )

I doubt you need a CCR but it would work. I would think an 1100AHx2 would be more then enough but I don't know how many users your talking about. Given that your talking about dsl uplinks you may even be fine with an rb2011. I have heard of up to 1800 hotspot users on one rb1100 and that wasn't an x2

For using the DSL check out PCC:

The CCR1036-12G-4S looks ideal, since been told that fiber to business in my area is in testing and be rollout by end of 2013.

it will be the Main Core Router and only Router with the following

WAN's
2 x Business ADSL2+ via Draytek Vigor120's ( each @ 13MB/s down at 20:1 ratio )
1 x Home Adsl2+ via Draytek Vigor120 ( each @ 13MB's down at 50:1 ratio )

would be nice to bond all three ADSL lines but QOS for LAN2 use always go out on WAN3 and capped

LAN1 [ Business /Personal ]

1 x HP Procurve v1910-24G as the main switch
3 x Apple Extreme Air-stations

LAN2 [Guest network - HOTSPOT with CAPTIVE PORTAL]
Netgear GS110TP switch to
4 x Draytek AP700 Airstations

The cloud core router could handle a hand full of gigabit connections to the internet so it will have an easy time with the less then combined 100Mbps uplink. I have an RB1200 with a full BGP routing table and a few hundred homes behind it that is doing fine. I still don't think I'd spend the extra to get the CCR although the cost difference between the 1100AHx2 and CCR is minimal. I am pretty amazed at the low cost of the CCR actually and I am looking forward to getting a few of them for the backbone of our network. The 1200 I am talking about is currently is running at 17% CPU and has 753MB of free memory even though it has to process over 400 thousand routes and is currently dealing with thousands of packets per second... and that with only one 1.2GHz core.
