Setup recommended for many wireless clients (smartphones)

Wed May 29, 2013 11:31 am

Hi,

I'm planning to provide Internet access to a local event (concert) where there will be thousands of phones and possible the same number connection attempts.

I'm planning to use RB433AH with 3 * R52 cards with 3 sectors for 2.4Ghz (channel 1,6,11) and some loco's for 5Ghz.

Software will be Hotspot, offsite radius, the simplest login page possible, each account limited to 256kbps (maybe 512k)

I may be very wrong with this setup but any suggestions are welcome.

200 concurrent users at 512k that means 100,2Mbps whereas the RB433AH does not have gigabit ports to handle more than that, unless you are planning to use its all 3 ether ports for load balancing.

3 * R52 radio cards could cause self interference with that many connected clients. I would probably go with 4*2,4Ghz sector access points that are surrounding the area and 1*2,4Ghz omni access point somewhere in the middle.

Consider to use 20MHz mode for N if you plan that standard. Modern Samsung smartphones are pesky with 40MHz. Tested on RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN.

So far I'm considering using a few AP's with encryption, one AP without encryption, mostly 2.4, 1 5ghz N.

AP's will be either Mikrotik of TP-Link TL-WA5110, considering that this will only a 3 day event, I want to use the devices I already have.

Hotspot, clean login, offsite radius maybe.

Any suggestions on how to speedup hotspot firewall or to reduce load on the hotspot server ?
