802.11ac - Qualcomm Atheros 98xx support

Thu Nov 14, 2013 11:02 am

Hi Mikrotik team,

there are quite a few 802.11ac pci-e cards available on sale already which a based on QCA chips. For example, Compex and SparkLan based on QCA9880.
When will Mikrotik start to support them?

We have never made it a secret, that we are researching 802.11ac. We don't have any specific dates for availability.

Can you confirm that support for 802.11AC will be added in V6? Or only in V7?

When it's ready, we will add it to v6. You will not have to wait until v7

Will MikroTik be able to make any announcement regarding 802.11ac support? I would like to have faster WiFi for my home devices (iPad, Laptop etc.) and would like to know if a MikroTik device with mPCI card is foreseeable, or I'll be forced to switch to other manufacturers.

It is not all about.. All we know, that 98XX PCIE cards are on market: COMPEX, ALFA, design flows from Q. All we know it is SW issue.. Same way we were using 93XX cards in advance of any annoucement. For me it is essential to know 1Q in advance to prepare design for our new products.. The information we do f*ck around it is is like: go elsewhere, you should not care at all.. Your position is fine for EU masses, for us like developers and implementors it is very uncomfortable.. We use thousands of pcs of your equipment per year and anyway, spreading back informtion in between the user that MT is no longer looser in radio..

I can't say when 802.11ac will be supported, because MikroTik doesn't have such information. When it will be fully implemented and tested, then it will be available. We can't guarantee a specific date, because this will depend on how the testing goes.

Your best bet is to just wait for Ubiquiti. I know some people beta-testing Airmax-AC products and can get up to over 700mb air rates, and over 450Mb throughput. Doesn't sound like Mikrotik even has a interest in this. They should make a high-power 802.11ac PCI card, and you use it with a RB800, and with NV2 could probably get 500-600mb in an 80mhz channel! It would be a dream, but will probably never happen, or if/when it does, they'll be far behind. I predict 2015, IF they try anything.

With ISM band, "ac" is apocalypse.

All the provider using 80MHz channel... What you expect?
5GHz come like 2,4GHz with only 3 channel not overlapped.

"ac" is the dead of the WISP.

.ac is a big chance for WISPs to compete. But of course you need a
plan to handle (self-)interference.

We move away backhauls from 5GHz to licensed. As backhauls carry
the most traffic this free's a lot of spectrum. Affordable licensed gear
moved to 1024QAM these days. Header compression gets standard.
So you get near 1GB aggregated Bandwidth to the tower without using
a single 5GHz Channel (and without the hassle of shared frequency).

Using a synced 5GHz .ac system for last mile you can give speeds to
the customer which cant be done with DOCSIS or VDSL.
I am not sure UBNT will deliver the quality and reliability we need and
I am sure their equipment will not be available in reasonable numbers next
year. And I am sure they will continue to ignore regulations with their
next gear to make every business modell a risk.

UBNT guys tell you you dont need sync as they are not able to do it. They even
do not see the need for ATPC to reduce self interference. But a WISP has to
take care of his usable spectrum and take measures to squeeze every bit
out of it.

So look around and choose the mix of gear you're able to work with in the future.

Hey thats not fair. I know that you have a hard time with developement and stuff like that, but thats not just you. Almost every ISP has its own solution for network management so it isnt so much about hardware as in your case, but more about software. Ubnt has announced new AC equipment and what should we do know? throw away routerboards and starts using ubnt? We also need to know if we should wait a while or just buy those ubnt antennas.

I am not saying that ubnt is great... they have their own issues and I am sure that Insider knows them pretty well too.

Is it an "Atheros" based card? I found a few on eBay from China I just ordered. Somebody has to know of some card that works...

Seems not to be a simple upgrade path. Big competitor does only PTP in a first step. I dont see .ac from Radwin, Repeatit, ... now. Only Cambium has a 256QAM PTMP Radio but this is expensive and not .ac.

I guess the first chipsets have their problems ...

I am not done yet but I got the ar9888 and with it out of align 6 miles away I get about 400mbps. Once aligned I am guessing about 600+mbps. We will see.
