CPE-Antenna alignment via customer / Application available?

Posted: Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:20 pm
by schorsch
We are planning to equip our new cpes with routerboards. Is there a possibility to allow the customer to allign the antenna without giving him access to the whole router? Maybe with an integrated webserver or with a client application via snmp?

Or do I have to write my own application?

Let me dig in the office on Tuesday. I think I have something like this flying around my hard disk...

If I just forget to come back here, a short reminder to info at cmit dot de might help ;-)

HI All.

We have made a custom Apps that are pretty cool :-)
that uses both SNMP and Telnet. And we are showing the Signal with a grapich bar red, yellow, green for the signal strenght.
and you can set the SSID for diffrent base stations...
and soon we can let the Customers Scan and then connect.
and the apps is in the MT routerboard disk....
so we dont need any cd roms. And we uppdate the apps via ftp

if some one is intrested mail me on rickard@rbcom.se

Ok, found it ;)

Short list of features:
Small client app to help clients/customers to align their (RouterOS based) CPE. (The CPE is queried by SNMP.)
The customer just enters the ip address of the CPE and presses "Start".

The app is showing you:
- system name
- MAC (wlan) of you CPE
- configured frequency
- wireless connection status (via a red/green signal)
- wireless signal strength (numeric dB and bar graph)

It's in last beta state, so I have to finish some things to get things running. Of course it's one single exe file, no installation, no registry trash, ...

I will offer that as a branded app to interested WISPs. Anyone interested please write me a short email to info at cmit dot de to get in touch.

Best regards,
Christian Meis

The RB112's have a built in speaker/beeper. From my understanding this is to allow alaignment via a tone. I have not tried it so I do not know if it is functioning is in the software yet or not. But if/when this works it is a perfect tool for most self installs.

We also use the WaveRider product and one nice feature is the units are always available through the 169.254.10.250 ip address regardless of what the managment address has been configured for. You may recognize this as a block that windows will give an interface by default if it can not come up with a DHCP address. Has anyone used or considered using this block so any end user software could be set to communicate to the radio with out the user haveing to configure an IP address? Could be a fast and simple way to get novice end users to connect up to a radio and enter in information in cases where the AP has to be chosen. Or other location dependant information is required. I'm no programer so I can only help with the idea!

OK, guys... No need to kiss anyone, actually (or do kiss your wife, if you have one ;) ).

I'm totally burried in the finishing stages of a project and not really in the office for the rest of this week.
I'll get back to everyone here and the ones who e-mailed me next week.
Let me at least get it translated to English - I suppose most of you won't make much use of it with a German user interface...

Any news ???

We have "RadioManager", runs on a PC or laptop, connects with Telnet or RS232 port, has easy-to-use RSSI (signal strength) bargraphs, and even audio tones for alignment using the PC sound system/speakers - great for CPEs that don't have any buzzers etc. Can be customised for operator/WISP OEM use.
All parameters can be viewed but password-ony access for "settable" items such as freq, SSID, etc. Allows authorised user to launch bandwidth tests etc. Ideal for corporate and WISP use.

An "old version" screenshot here:
http://www.cablefreesolutions.com/radio ... anager.jpg

Release version just about to be launched, a few days away (software is stable, just the registration portal being production-tested)
Any interest, do email us:
radiosupport (at) cablefreesolutions.com

Best news, it's free... :-)

I found this site that hosts the Radio Manager software.

http://www.cablefreecommunications.com/

I really like the app. except it really needs the ability to check RSSI via SNMP.
I wouldn't want to give out any telnet passwords to our customers.

Both links should be correct - one leads to the other.
Just for clarity, that's CableFree's Radiomanager software, which is a Windows GUI, works with most versions of ROS, is frequently updated (with auto version update prompt) and lets you see most aspects of a radio configuration - ideal for P2P links as well as base stations and CPEs.

The software was written to run with our own-brand hardware, but will run with any MT/ROS box.
You do need to put a custom script on your radio to use it - adds a unique user/password for the software to log on.
Drop me a mail at stephen <dot> patrick [at] cablefree <dot> co <dot> uk and we'll send it over.

We welcome feedback for any features users would like to see in our software.

Hello Mikrotik Support,

don´t you see how many people need a tool with which they can monitor the Signal strenghts for installation of a CPE?!

So - why don´t you integrate a signal monitor in ROS where we (or our customers) can see the singal strengths of the wireless interface!
I think integration would be quite simple for you and would give us a real adavantage!

maybe by typing the ip address of the ether if into a webbrowser (like the admin tool works atm).
The admin tool could move to ip-adress/admin or so...

Please be so kind and have a look at this issue.

you can use the wireless align mode with the beeper.
beeper is not really the right thing if you (or a customer) is installing a CPE!
Or why do you think everybody asks for such a tool?

most competitors have something where you can see the signal strenghts - not only because it is funny...

And i think this is really no work for mikrotik but an advantage for every user...

Mikrotik does have a signal reading go into the registered tab it gives signal strength etc etc. but a nice tool like this may eas install's :-)

you can use the wireless align mode with the beeper.
Well I just tried /interface wireless align monitor on an RB133C running v3.9 and it immediately rammed the CPU usage to 100% and produced no results for over a minute. Closed the console and the CPU rate remained at 100% for several more minutes before it returned to 'normal'.

Having already had to 'downgrade' several routers from v3.x to 2.9.51 because of problems I'm beginning to suspect that the 'smaller RAM' versions of the 100 series at least just can't cope with v3.

yes - but i think thats all too difficult.
We only want to tell our customer: "got to "ip-address" and there you´ll see your signal Strength.
There shoud be a signal value and maybe some graphic wichs shows a "Signal-Graph" with red, yellow and green colours (depending on the signal strenghts)...
So the customer needs no technical know how - he just has to type in an address and could see if the signal is good or not...

We've found that it's better to tell the customer to give us a call when he aligns his
antenna. So he needs only a cellphone while he's climbing his roof. With a client
app he has to take his laptop up (if he has one) and has additional cabling, ...
Only alternative would be an led-row at the back of the routenna showing signalstrength.

we have also "non-Mikrotik" CPEs wich show us the signal via web-interface like I wrote before...
And there is nearly no one that cannont handle the installation by himself.

With Mikrotik CPEs we have to use the tool from cmit (which does not work if the wlan if is in a bridge) or have to call/drive to the custumer -> cost´s a lot of time...

cmit,

If you are still giving out the script to create the special username/password, I'd sure appreciate a copy.

Thanks!

cmit, are you still active on this thread, and if so, are you still offering the script? I have downloaded your application, and would like to try it on some of my mikrotik routers, but need the script to do so.

Is that script to create the special username/password for this application available anywhere, from anyone, else?

Thanks!
cmit,

If you are still giving out the script to create the special username/password, I'd sure appreciate a copy.

Thanks!

What script for a "special username/password" do you mean?
The thread here was about an app for CPE alignment...

Perhaps there are two different applications being discussed on this thread?
The software was written to run with our own-brand hardware, but will run with any MT/ROS box.
You do need to put a custom script on your radio to use it - adds a unique user/password for the software to log on.

Do drop us an email, we'll send you the script. It's requested not to put it on a public forum, because of the obvious security risk.
cmit, if the above mentioned script is for an application different from yours, could you then please email me a copy of your application to alan@fiebig.us?

Thanks!

Just for completeness/clear up confusion:
"radiomanager" is from our company, CableFree.
You have to put a script on the box to allow the software to connect.
But, the current version doesn't support 3.x, a new version is due soon.

Yeah, you're right - I e-mailed their support or info and got a password - I'll see if I can find it.

In the jpg you can see how it looks like. Turns amber and red for lower signal levels. It has big numbers so it's easy to see - even from distance. Seen some limitations though; only station mode and the OID must be right or else it tend to hang...

I didn't catch the part about only working in station mode, that must be why it isn't working for me. I cant find a way to use station mode instead of station-pseudobridge and give a customer a public address without natting.

I contacted them the other day - since I could not find the password again, and they said; Oops, no need for password on this - we'll remove it"

The software is made for WISP, and made to i.e. run directly from a CD. It expect you to be connected to a CPE in station mode with NAT and DHCP service. It will grab your PCs default gateway (the CPE then) and use SNMP to poll with the predefined community string. Quite clever and works nice for DIY installations.

You can point it to other IP-addresses also, but the OID must be correct - default for wlan1. I've seen that changing a wlan card messes this up (due to OID counter), and a system reset is required to get it working. Don't know if it works in sudo-bridge - we don't use it. Makes less sense to try on a base station I guess...

There is a new RAT1.6 beta out for this - also supports UBNT/AirOS now. I've tried it - works!

Seems like some guys missed that RAT is for public download - don't have to ask anyone for it...

How about a WWW/FTP server, and allowing people to DL it?
That way we do not have to publish our email addresses over the internet.

Software sounds good though, would like to get a copy too.

Thanks
