Great work MikroTik!!! - 100MB 20mhz Channel with AC

We've recently upgraded our second N link to AC and couldn't be more happy with the results. The latest iteration of NV2 is keeping latency in check and throughput is excellent.

We're now getting 100+ MB through a 20mhz channel consistently on both links. We've deployed dozens of N links and our expectation is usually 90 to 100 on a 40Mhz channel.

Any day you can upgrade just the boards and get back half of your frequency is a good day! :D

This link is 9.5 Miles (15.26 km) with Jirous 29 Dbi DuplEX dishes. Check out that latency!

For the curious - the peak shown here was using TCP with only 1 Connection - not UDP.

We're excited to get more links upgraded. Both towers this link is on have several sectors and PTP links so we're happy to have the frequency back.

Could you post a complete frequency scan from the tower? I find it useful to find out how crowded is the radio space at your location, because some people around here find but most of them don't find an improvement upgrading to AC due to the interference. Is it a shared location with other ISP-s or not?
Of course, be sure to white out the mac addresses and ssid-s from the scan.

Great thought - Here are the scans from both the AP side and the client side. Everything in blue is our gear on either side. Our competitor shows up prominently on the AP side.

Without a doubt both towers are stacked with 5ghz gear. The antennas we're using help immensely in these situations...

I'm assuming the antennas used are jirous, right?
Which model? It would be interesting and useful to see how different antennas (especially mikrotik's and rocketdishes) work under same conditions.
Here is a place where isolation is more important than on other installations.

Yes - we're using the JIrous JRC-29 Duplex on both sides - it has 53 dBi of port to port isolation.

There's been some discussion about how higher cross polarity isolation may improve SNR between each of the spatial streams.

As with many other aspects of the protocol, 802.11ac kicks up the existing technology a notch by using 256-QAM. Rather than a constellation that is 8 by 8, the 256-QAM constellation has 16 phase shifts and 16 amplitude levels. Figure 2-4 compares the 64-QAM constellation to the 256-QAM constellation. At first glance, they’re quite similar, though there are many more constellation points in the latter. One analogy that is often helpful is to compare QAM to a game of darts. The transmitter picks a target point and encodes an amplitude and phase shift. This amplitude and phase shift starts off at the ideal constellation point, and the receiver pulls the transmission out of the air and maps it onto what was received. As the constellation points get closer and closer together, the transmitter must be able to throw its darts much more accurately to hit the target point.

With twice as many phase shifts and amplitude levels, higher SNR between each of the constellation points becomes important. Better cross-polarity isolation is a step in that direction.

Our initial upgrades were to links that already had the DuplEX's. We haven't had a chance to compare the other dishes with less cross-pol isolation.

We do know that upgrading the boards alone with everything else held equal dramatically improved performance.

Hi,

you are allowed to use approx. 316Watt EIRP?

I just shortly recalc your link, I see RX-Level at -47, and you say ~ 15.3Km link length and I see 5.320 MHz as used TX frequency.

FSL at 5.320MHz for 15.3Km is arround 131dB, You get -47 at the RX-Interface + 29dBi RX-Antenna Gain = -76 before RX Antenna, plus FSL (131dB) = 55dBm EIRP on TX site!!!

In Germany: You will be killed by the Authority! If you not killed directly, the penalty will kill you and your business!

Excellent math work Lutz! Fortunately the poster is not dead :shock: as this link isn't in production on the channel you mentioned. We certainly do not condone or encourage operators to exceed FCC EIRP limitations. In situations where EIRP becomes a factor, MikroTik provides the ability to decrease the TX power output accordingly.
