The Dude, Cacti, Splunk, NMS - where do the fit/overlap?

Mon Nov 05, 2018 2:44 pm

I am just trying to get his sorted in my mind. I am curious to know how these fit together, or don't. What is the typical use case, or better put how do yo use them. I primarily serve the SMB market. I am not a WISP, although I do a fair amount of PTP and PTMP installations :-). I am to the point where I would like to have better insight and visibility what I have out there. What I am looking for in a system - at least based on what I think I want/know :-). Not really in order.

- good visualizations to measure performance, network layout, identify potential problems
- device monitoring and identification
- Logging, accounting and alerting
- no individual PC or server support
- easy to setup, use and maintain (I do not need project - set it and forget it)
Is the above sound? Am I missing something obvious?

I have looked at all of these and there seems to be some overlap. What would you implement if you were in my shoes?

Anyone? I was hoping @jotne would chime in as he is the splunk guy and spread some light on this topic.

I don't think they overlap and I would implement Dude, Splunk and, in place of Cacti, Zabbix.
Dude for management and very basic monitoring but it can do more.
Splunk (I am using it's alternative Graylog) for log collecting, log analyzing and alerting.
Zabbix for monitoring, graphing and alerting.

For monitoring stuff I do recommend Splunk as I have posted here:

There are other nice program like NEDI that can be used to keep track of all your devices.

Thanks for your reply! Do you use The Dude? I am thinking about using Splunk as well but it seems the the Dude should come first.

Is the much overlap between splunk and NEDI? I guess I am asking how you use both. Thanks for you help - I am trying to get some simple monitoring and logging up and going.

@karlisi

I have been checking out your recommendations - thanks again.
Zabbix looks like it can do log collection as well - What do you like about graylog better? I wish I could get down to one tool that does the log, monitoring, graphing, and alerting.

Cheers
