Can Dude monitor a Win10 PC with firewall on?

Mon Jul 20, 2020 3:27 am

Hi folks

Can Dude monitor a Win10 PC with firewall on and no open ports?

I can't find anything in a default setup of The Dude that would accomplish that.

Thanks

Monitor what?
It's difficult to monitor anything if it doesn't respond.
Usually Ping works in the same subnet.

I want to monitor if the machine is powered on or not.

Windows 10 default settings blocks ping, and I don't want to require users to change their settings.

I am on the same network segment as the users whose PCs I want to monitor.

Other software might be able to do it, but I wondered if The Dude could do anything to confirm whether a PC is up in these circumstances.

Thanks

when ping is blocked, ARP request usually does the job if you are on the same L2 segment. Unfortunately, TheDude does not have ARP probe, so the only way I know of is a script in RouterOS

Thanks @vecernik87.
I thought it was worth asking in case there was something I hadn't found.

No, Windows 10 default settings only blocks pings from outside its local subnet, so if Dude is on same network as PC (As mentioned above), then ping should work

OK, that's good to know @CZFan. I guess some of them have altered the default settings.

I'm essentially monitoring their RDP ports, but if there was a way to check ARP with Dude, that might have been interesting.

I don't really want to spend more time on it. I'll just leave it mulling in the dark recesses of my brain, and if it becomes necessary, I'll make everyone allow ping from the Dude server.

Cheers.
