Dude Edition Handshake Timed out Issue, and some more bigger issues.

Tue Aug 25, 2020 11:21 pm

Hi there

A very peculiar problem I ve faced today. I just installed CCR1072 with 6.47.2 stable ROS in the network. Dude server is the dude edition 1100AH. After installing, the server is not able to connect to the ROS of 1072 citing handshake timed out issues. I upgraded the Dude edition from 6.44.5 to 6.45.9 bug fix. Same issue.. not connecting.

Then when I upgraded to 6.47.2 dude server, the dude edition new terminal froze up on me, the cpu showed 40% or so usage, but other than that the terminal was non responsive.
I then rebooted it manually and still the same issue, now its ether is not even coming up on winbox, though lights on ether blink.

So I tried with a backup dude edition 1100ah, and exactly the same thing. This time after waiting for more than a minute I was able to /dude set enabled=no, and the dude edition started to work again, without the dude server ofcourse.

I am now using dude edition on 6.45.9, but its still not handshaking with 6.47.2 ... this is such a huge issue and now one dude edition is unusable. Tomorrow I will try taking out the SSD and see if I can netinstall the 1100AH.

In meanwhile Can I bypass the handshake protocol on the dude server so it can recognize my 1072 on network and I can monitor link graphs and e.t.c.?

Again, today morning started everything from scratch. Formatted dude SSD and imported the database. As soon as /dude set enabled=yes, the dude edition server goes extremely sluggish. Because it will require manual client installations for 6.47.2, the server terminates access to itself via the old clients, and lots of warnings pop up on logs. But even after shutting down all clients, it's just extremely sluggish, to the point of unuseable.

Has someone else experienced a similar issue with dude server? I mean as soon as I downgrade to 6.45.9 ROS, everything starts working smoothly... the dude clients are automatically upgraded/downgraded and all graphs and link stats on dude server run as they shd.

This is making me nuts.

I am running dude in CHR 6.46.6 which is able to poll both newer and older ros versions. Subsequently upgrading all network devices to 6.45.9.

Hi Jarda, thanks for the response.

So have you got any RB with 6.47.2 ROS on ur network and ur 6.46.6 server can connect and properly handshake with that device?

I am just not going anywhere with 6.47.2.

So I did a test for you. Upgraded one of disposable devices in my lab to 6.47.2 (RB333 model, PowerPC architecture).
The result in 6.46.6 Dude:
RB333 v-6-47-2 in 6-46-6 Dude.JPG
It is accessed both the winbox and SNMPv3 protocols without any problems from dude.

Is there any reason to install other version than 6.45.9 (latest long-term) to your devices? Generally only long-term version is recommendable to be used in productive environment. All others are kind of beta/testing branches that are expected to have much more errors than long-term branch.

Read release notes to v. 6.47!
What's new in 6.47 (2020-Jun-02 07:38):

Important note!!!

- The Dude server must be updated to monitor v6.46.4 and v6.47beta30+ RouterOS type devices.
- The Dude client must be manually upgraded after upgrading The Dude server.
- The Dude requires "winbox" policy instead of "dude" to monitor v6.46.4 and v6.47beta30+ RouterOS type devices.
That is why I am using dude 6.46.6... :-) I just have forgotten the original reason, because otherwise I would not use such "new" version.

Thank you so much for going to lengths and helping us out.

I've now tried repeatedly but to no avail. Dude edition 1100AH freezes up like hell on 6.47.2 and just cannot work. I can downgrade it to 6.45.9 without issues.

Yeah I agree I ve mostly used long term packages on my network. Its just there was a RB1072 on my network at a critical location which froze twice in a week without any warning. I replaced it with another but just to see if it was from any ROS issue or not, I upgraded it to 6.47.2 stable.

I guess I will downgrade it to 6.45.9 sometime soon just so I dont have to deal with 6.47.2 dude.

And again, thank you very much.

- The Dude requires "winbox" policy instead of "dude" to monitor v6.46.4 and v6.47beta30+ RouterOS type devices.

So, if I were to unclick dude from policy, wouldn't my dude server lose access to all older ROS devices? In my recent case, I had both clicked but it just froze to a standstill.

How the dude performs on 1100AH? I was testing the dude on RB2011 many years ago, but while I had an option to move it to virtualised environment, it finally started to work in usable way. Now I run it in hyper-v on single core of AMD Ryzen3 with some of 480GB RAM (Actually, 400MB would be enough), stored on nvme SSD.

I have found very important to shedule daily this script:
dude vacuum-db ; dude export-db disk1/dude-backup-9999-99-99.tgz
It ensures that the database does not almost grow during the time, and provides actual backup for case "what if...". The outage last few seconds.

Database has around 400-500MB and backup around 150MB.

Dude on 1100AH is no fun if we have more than 1000 devices to monitor, ping and ROS only... (I ve 2000+ devices). I usually have backup of 70MB in 3 weeks of usage and then have to vacuum it because it then starts to act sluggishly.

We will soon be getting some dell xeon severs which one of them I am going to primarily use for dude server. If Hyper-V is working seamlessly then I might opt for it.

Thanks Jarda for ur help.

Running dude on server and daily vacuuming are the most important things, I would say.

I am interested in how your CHR on 6.46.6 is working stable, we have been unable to get a CHR to work above 6.46.3 (6.46.4 where everything changed)
Ours will drop communication to winbox and DUDE clients quite quickly, then you have to reboot the vm. Sometimes the console works but not usually. Logging doesnt work either when it happens

I am not using invoking winbox from dude because I use special user with lowered rights for the the dude monitoring. Such user would be useless in winbox... And it works good without any obvious problems.

Dude is also accepting syslog messages from the devices and store them as expected.

I upgraded dude manytimes, my oldest recorded data are from 2014 or even maybe 2012.

Now I don't see any unusual problems with 6.46.6. Only those that are known for ages...

And it it keeps the connections with dude client for days. It also reconnects immediately when occasionally broken connection is restored.

Can you explain special user? We have our Ros devices winbox connecting

The server works stable, but note that there is daily vacuum so the server is always stopped for few seconds while vacuuming and export is processed.

There is additional custom user group with passive rights and dude connects by user which is member of that group. Dude is not connecting with admin rights to the devices.

I have the same problem. Support advised mi to upgrade to the latest version. Now I have everything (more than 1000) with 6.47.8, but the Dude (CHR 8xCPU) is still connecting and reconnecting to all devices, Dude client is unresponsive and it is not possible to connect with Winbox (Loading... all the time). The second Dude server (RB1100x4D) is more responsive but also connecting to other devices all the time. There was no problem with 6.44 before upgrade.
