Tragedy forces me into Network Admin role

Thu Mar 04, 2010 4:42 pm

My Network admin passed suddenly and unexpectedly, may he RIP.

I'm still here and am now the new Network Admin a position I am not qualified for but have been managing for the last 6 months. I have a question that may seem silly to you experts but here goes anyway.

My network is 5o facilities in 8 states. The network is setup like this;

192.168.1.1 = corp office
192.168.2.0/24 = facility #1
192.168.3.0/24 = facility #2
192.168.4.0/24 - facility # 3

And so on to .57.0/24

How do I get The Dude to scan that range and put them all on one map via auto discover?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

click on discovery and then on the address add.

192.168.0.0/18

with this will scan from

191.168.0.1 -> 191.168.63.254

or yo can try to make it in parts.. I recommend you to add the networks one by one, so you have better chance to order the devices and make a good map, if you add 1000 devices at once you will become crazy.!

Thank you BLACKBOX, that helped, it also gave me the clue I needed to understand what to search for and how. I'm learning and teaching myself every day. The company could have just hired someone from the outside that was more qualified than I. The main boss asked if I was up to it, I said maybe, he said good enough, gave me the raise and cut me loose. Maybe he is the crazy one.

All I need now is a monitor 100ft by 100ft and I'll be able to see my network.

I see what you mean by doing it one facility at a time. I really understand it now, good advice.

Thanks again.

Instead of using a 100ft monitor just create some parent maps and then add groups of maps within it using submaps, then you will know if something below fails and just navigate down to it.

I would be doing this for your discovery as well, it will be a lot easier to maintain and control.
