Any chance to be able to specify a different RouterOS port for monitoring Mikrotik devices?

4b3 observations - Backup your dude folder before upgrading. Upgrade was smooth as usual.

As noted FIXED - If you click "add static" the dude no longer crashes.
Not Fixed - The remove resolved button on the outages tab of services doesn't remove resolved outages.

Other Features
1) Exporting a backup stops the polling process, any probes that time out while the export is being done will appear down soon after the export has finished.
2)Select a device then click the copy button all the history will be erased and graphs will be gone.
3)On the probe panel select a probe then click the copy button, the probe XML will include all the devices it is installed on.
NOTE: Care should be taken to remove the unneeded XML when copying and pasting or sharing probes through XML.

Still nothing to worry about KEEP up the great work!

Some probes shown as "not available" in device services. New Function probe has a default text Available=1, Value=2+2.
If I delete the old probe and makes a new similar one it will work, but it gives me a lot to do... Fix in a hurry??

@eivind Don't delete the old probe. Wait at least 6 minutes to see if the old probe starts working.

"not available" can mean that the previous SNMP read did not work that would cause a "false positive". If the previous read did not work then the probe will not work for 5 minutes or more specifically the amount of time that is set in Negative Cache time of the function that grabs the OID. The default of which is 300 seconds.

You can modify the Negative Cache time but it takes a bit of work by modifying every function. If you do make it lower your false positives will not be 5 minutes long.

I hope that makes sense,
Lebowski

Thanks Lebowski, I know. Some faulty probes did come up after five minutes. I did a test by making one new identical probe with a different name. It did work, but the old ones who has been OK since beta 2 arrived still don't work after 24 hurs. I'm testing if it is available with "function() >0" and have other probes who is working fine with exactly the same test on a close to identical function. I tried to set "" in the test but it still did'nt work. There might be a communication problem between functions and probes. As one said in this forum; It's a dangerous life to always use latest version, but since the Dude is free of charge I'm not complaining, just telling :-)

"function() >=0" In version 4b3 the "Available" line is less forgiving.

If you take the probe that doesn't work and add one to the value that is being read the probe comes up but it will never appear down. I have solved this for my self by following gsandul's example of a function that returns "False" or a value and a probe with two if statements.

Function: if(array_size(oid_column("1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.57", 10 ,29)), oid("1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.57.0", 10, 29)+1 ,"False")
If the oid is available read the value and add one to it otherwise return false.

Probe: if(Cisco_CPU_a()<>"False",if(Cisco_CPU_a() -1< 70, "", concatenate("Warning: high CPU = ", Cisco_CPU_a(), "%")), "Cisco Device down")
If the value is not "False" subtract 1 from it make sure the value is less than 70 or complain about high CPU, If the value is False return "Cisco Device Down".

Re: Dude v4beta3 released

Solved it the easiest way! Migrating this formula into gsandul's solution would give me a real challenge:
Uncorrectables x 100 / (Unerroreds + Correcteds + Uncorrectables)
(oid("1.3.6.1.2.1.10.127.1.1.4.1.4.3")*100)/
(oid("1.3.6.1.2.1.10.127.1.1.4.1.2.3")+(oid("1.3.6.1.2.1.10.127.1.1.4.1.3.3"))+(oid("1.3.6.1.2.1.10.127.1.1.4.1.4.3")))+0.001
Maybe not the smartest way of doing it, but it does the job.
Because Dude don't graph under errors I have chosen to make a separate probe for "Data Correction Too High" , and using another single oid probe for down statement for the devices.
I'm trying as hard as I can to keep my networking knowledge at a minimum, and give myself more time to run my business.
Thank You for Your inputs :-)

is it released for PPC (RB1100)? - seems like only beta1 files are posted on the site.

If not, then is there an ETA (can you let us know what the issue is?)

thanks,

@caterpillar, The backup is taking too long to export, lower your raw keep time to make sure dude.db doesn't get bigger than 2GB. Use copy to make a backup of your dude folder for now. Hopefully they fix both the 2GB limit and the issue with IO affecting polling soon.

I use the "network" element without any data (creates a small yellow cloud that you can use as "elbow" (if you mean this...)
I am also having the "Not Available" services sometimes now... wonder what got changed, there...

Lebowski, I would like to discuss using (partial) snmpwalks in functions.. as I am having severe CPU issues here.

Can we fork a new thread to discuss this, please?

My approach for a sanity-check in a function is:
never mind that, it doesn not work

Re: Dude v4beta3 released

Hi ...

I went from 4b2 to 4b3 some days ago, no issues to upgrade.

Spent some weeks playing with ROS 5RC11, 5RC12 and now settle on 5.0.

My system is small, e.g. a 433UAH, a pair of 411ARs, 3 old WRAP X86, all loaded with ROS5.0 now. Around 70 CPEs (NS2 Loco & Bullet 2). There is 3 XR9 for NLOS path.

* Any card that run as client-bridge (R52Hn, XR9, R52n), after this double upgrade to 4B3 x ROS 5.0 missed the speed/signals levels at the labels. On the other side, if I create a link between any UBNT client and AP still showing signals levels (tx/rx), connection speed & etc. At the MT devices, does not matter if mastering is snmp or routeros. Just data speed shows up.

* Torch avialable at mouse over link lables + right click does not run.

* I'm using Dude to collect & graph some data volume info, as measured by "bytes" field on queue tree. Those queues are common low priority (priority=8) channels I set to those traffic which customers does not realize about, like Windows Update, several anti-virus update, adobe update, etc ... and Youtube/4shared. Each uses pcq and a max limit so customers share those channels. I expected a monthly basis graph, reseting all counters after 30 days by myself - but - most are reseting when the volume reaches 4.1 ... 4.3 GBytes. I guess this is not Dude related but ROS. Anyway.

PS: not Dude but 5.0 winbox ... torch on simple queues (mouse over a simple queue line) is not running too, the source address filter field on torch is not being filled with simple queue target address, as used to be on ros 4.17.

Regards

So the 2GB DB size limit hasn't been fixed in this release? Has anyone confirmed this and have Mikrotik acknowledged this bug? This is the only thing preventing us upgrading from 3.6.

Lebowski, Thanks a lot for the software. I have used the software for 3 years and i like it.
I just upgrade to release 4, and
I have had some problems with the Outage Report, because doesn´t appear in the web page and in the left hand tree.
Perhaps because it is beta version but there are things missing like the snmpwalk to print or export to a file.

Best Regards

I also use dude on RouterOS to monitor my network with ~ 3000 devices and I can't perform an export :? Maybe Mikrotik support can give some piece of advice how to export Dude.

When upgrading from b2 to b3, the server side went pretty well, though the service was not restarted when the installation was complete, but at the same time, "the dude server" wasn't even in the services list. I had to run dude.exe as administrator to get the service running again.

On my workstation, when I ran The Dude again, it asked if I wanted to upgrade, I said yes. It downloaded everything, but then crapped out because it couldn't copy dude.exe.

Why not use a loader similar to Winbox so that the main binary can be upgraded from the server when the server is upgraded?

When you get a network map that's "stuck" loading like that, create a second map. If the second map works, delete the first.

becouse no one is helping in this trouble, i try to d something i can. by the way remove resolved also didn't do anything in my case.
I download several sqlite3 tools and try to delete in table outages rows where status is 1, but this 10 rows that are stuck also can't delete in that way (delete from outages where status=1), several other outages where removed but not these.
after i truncate all table outages, - this process take several hours and after commit table was almost empty.
after copying to dude/data. and start dude 403 with crossed fingers ... and problem was solved, stucked outages doesn't showed again.
in sqlite3 tools see some message that these stucked records is with missing constraint...

OR maybe someone new how to repair this sqlite3 dude database ? i try scnadisk, defrag and all report no errors or problem.
dude is strting fine, but even after i removed all messages from outages sometimes when i switch to outage it take about 60sek or more to show records...
Please help if someoine got ideas !!!! i don't want to create new services :) once again !

Problem is repaeating a got new outage that is pinging, but outage did not change state to resolved !!! how to change this situation!!!

use server as service. windows 7 on citrix virtualisation.

all charts and graphs and polling results are stored in the ram, and saved periodically (can configure how often). when you restart the dude, it reads the previous status from the files, and then starts gathering new data, which it stores in RAM until it's time to save it. the more devices you have, the quicker this data grows in RAM.

To reduce the db file size you should open the dude.db file with sqlite3 and do "vacuum;" query. Dude server must not be using that dude.db file at that time.

i 'm not sure that problem is with database size, in my case it looks like something happen'd wit database itself, maybe problem with storage where it is stored or something like that. But some records ar commited and some are not - in result memory usage is growing and after dude service restart lot of information are missing ! If this was only outages it was not so big problem but yesterday i catch a problem that new device also is missing after restart.
today try to move windows 7 image to local storage to see whats will be next !

Mikrotik or any else DUDE programmers please help us - with what tool i can repair dude sqlite3 database ? or i need repar integrity or compact database ?

The easy to vacuum the database is to put dude.db and sqlite3.exe in the same folder then make a shortcut to sqlite3.exe, edit the properties of the shortcut so that dude.db is on the command line.

"C:\Documents and Settings\person\Desktop\sqlite3.exe" dude.db

Then double click the shortcut, type VACUUM; A journal file will be created while it is vacuuming... I think that is how, it is still running ;)

Just fyi, my 1.6GB database took a couple hours to vacuum and is 900MB now but I did have the chart values set fairly high. I didn't start using the vacuumed database since I was just testing.

I found a log filling up in the Dude's files. Deleting this enabled me to do a backup. Unfortunately Dude still crashes just a few seconds after the download completes. I just hit alt+S to save it quickly and move it afterward.

Hi I noticed that there has been very little discussion about the PPC version of Dude v4beta3. I have a number of RB1100 deployed and I would like to install v4 on them. I have been waiting for a year to get a PPC version of Dudev4. Can anyone give me an estimate of when this might happen?

Hi all!!! Sorry for my bad english.
Database has more than 2 GB, and apparently this caused a crash Dude.
We rolled back the database and want to do VACUUM. But we had the same problem as ottoshr.
We can not do VACUUM:
sqlite3 /home/user/Work/Dude/dude_15.12.db
SQLite version 3.7.7.1 2011-06-28 17:39:05
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> VACUUM;
Error: PRIMARY KEY must be unique
Dude does not clear the "Failure". Please tell me how to do VACUUM, if you need it and how to fix a hanging logs "Failure"? Thanks!
sqlite> PRAGMA integrity_check;

Help, I need somebody!

I found are two identical index in the table objs.
Create a new database with empty tables chart_*, and delete duplicate records in objs results in resetting the base when starting Dude.

How can I be? Is it possible records with identical indices located in the objs or another tables?

Sorry Sherman, you are probably going to have to do some experimenting and hopefully you get lucky. If you have some old exports maybe you could start from there? I have not heard of anyone recovering from having serious database trouble. Maybe instead of deleting table information just change the duplicate records to be unique?

Bummer :(

Hi, Is Dude development stopped? And what about the v4 ppc version? We are still using v3.6 due to the lack os ppc version.

Running 4.0beta3 on ROS 4.17 on x86
57.6GB total HDD
57.4GB Free
2.6ghz AMD dual core, 6-10% cpu

Backup restarts Dude service.

I've seen reference to backup up dude files with file copy. Is this possible from Winbox or otherwise?

Dude is awesome otherwise, and has become key piece of our operation. Just a few things and it's the perfect network monitoring tool..... I understand that it's hard to budget development time for free software. Perhaps time to either have a paid license version or maybe send some t-bone steaks to Normis?

I'm also having some problems with backups in 4beta3. I have 1 map with 403 devices, when i make a backup it exports the TGZ file perfectly and give no error messages, but when i try to import the TGZ file it says that the current "user or password" are wrong and do not let me log in, but i'm sure my user and password are correct. So i'm locked outside the program, to recover i have to delete dude.db and import an older backup version. Anyone had something similar ?

Can you release the Dude as open source so the development can continue. Sadly, we are going to have to move much of our dude usage to Cacti because we cannot get the Dude to be reliable. I have been woken up many times by the dude saying that everything in my network is down. After a reboot of the Dude I get another 250 text messages saying everything is up again. I'd love a stable version and a few improvements.

Hi all!!! Sorry for my bad english.
Database has more than 2 GB, and apparently this caused a crash Dude.
We rolled back the database and want to do VACUUM. But we had the same problem as ottoshr.
We can not do VACUUM:
sqlite3 /home/user/Work/Dude/dude_15.12.db
SQLite version 3.7.7.1 2011-06-28 17:39:05
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> VACUUM;
Error: PRIMARY KEY must be unique
Dude does not clear the "Failure". Please tell me how to do VACUUM, if you need it and how to fix a hanging logs "Failure"? Thanks!
sqlite> PRAGMA integrity_check;

Probably you have done copy of device with older version of Dude and some have the same ID. As lebowski suggest change all duplicate key using SQLite and then retry vacuum;

Yeah I agree and it is a shame. I'm starting to look for a replacement but nothing is as polished as the dude.

I´m sticking to the old 3.6 release. It´s a lot more stable than the last beta release.

My dude server crashed and I opted to rebuild using netxms. I'm quite happy so far as it is quite potent. Also, it has android as well as webserver support.

I love dude, but it's poor support makes it hard to use in a production environment. Backup and restore should work at the very least IMHO.

Anyhoo, let us know how you fair.

We should convince Mikrotik to put The Dude on kickstarter so those who love it can contribute to enhancements, updates, and bug fixes :)

Has copied the message here, just in case.
Good day!
I wrote above about router rebooting on rc12. So.
I have installed Dude4.0beta3 package on the device (rc11). Updating to rc12 brought to reboots. Router worked on rc11 before today.
Today I tried to upgrade to ROS6.0 release and the router began reboots again :D Next, router has netinstalled again for ROS6.0 - and all stayed ok! After this Dude4.0beta3 has installed and all work!
These all say that the dude package brought to reboots after upgrading a release, or the updating process goes wrongly=)

P.S. This post is also in rc12 thread, just in case.
I forgot to install ntp packet on previous state "all work" system. Did it, and RB951 began reboot. So this dude package damages the install manager? Don't uderstand.
Now I don't want install the dude because each upgrade of the system will occur rebooting...

I guess I got a bit too excited too early, netxms SUCKS!!! Took me half the day to get the installer to work on server 2008. Finally got it installed and what a piece of garbage. Its really to bad us computer nerds are in charge of designing this crap because we really don't know how to make user friendly software.

all charts and graphs and polling results are stored in the ram, and saved periodically (can configure how often). when you restart the dude, it reads the previous status from the files, and then starts gathering new data, which it stores in RAM until it's time to save it. the more devices you have, the quicker this data grows in RAM.

i tried the previous version it taking a lot of bandwidth...
may i know, if we going to monitor about 1000 devices, what's the minimum RAM and bandwidth required for the monitoring?

The great Mikrotik is getting behind other good brands with it´s own monitoring software.

Please Mikrotik, Give us the CODE :D or develop and get paid for that.

We need a mikrotik software/appliance to monitor MK devices (massive setup, massive manager) with easy setup for each MK model.

I can donate to the dude or other MK software development software for monitoring.

If MK has some huge money offer from big company´s to develop the dude, they would do it, but as we are only a few buyers in the world they are forgetting us.

LET US WORK !!!

as example:
1. 100$ - life license.
2. 150 copies * 100$ = 15.000$ - will permit you to arrange one developer for approximately 1 year for dude development.

To the good folks at MikroTik:
When you present a product to your customers or potential customers, whether it be free or paid, that is as buggy as Dude is, whether you realize it or not, you are sending a powerful message about your commitment to quality that no amount of advertising can overcome.

I am not an IT professional, but an RF engineer who needs to replace some routers with something very reliable and stable, yet something a non-IT expert can set up and maintain. Several IT professionals that I know have recommended your routers. But after struggling with the many bugs in Dude, I am hesitant to pay my company's money for a Mikrotik product (and my time fighting bugs).

You don't necessarily need to add features to Dude (although a few basic ones would be helpful), but you do need to address the bugs.

And I will add my support for a free lite version and a reasonably priced paid version.

Thank you.

Please Mikrotik code monkeys, release a new paid version :)

I'd pay $100 just to be able to successfully backup my dude config. So close to being the perfect monitoring tool.

I have The Dude on my windows 7 PC 64, and it was working fine but recently I found that when I use winbox from The Dude tools it is not showing me the Hide Passwords check mark option also when I try to maximize the window it come as blank area arround and wont let me see anything out of the original area opened by the winbox trough The Dude. But if I open anything directly from my exe winbox it work perfectly. If any one have a clue on this let me know.
PSD I unistall it and reinstall diferent version and is the same, now I have version 4.0 Beta3. The windows UAC is correct I have full admin access.

Hey man,

For me is showing. What does not work for me are the functions with "ros_command" when a RouterBoard any loses connection "by getting off" ie the function (service) stops plot. This happens to anyone else?

Ex:
ros_command(":put [interface wireless registration-table get number=0 signal-to-noise ]")

Regards.

Dude is not dude anymore it's getting old.
so many request for improvement but no more updates :( :(

it worst, old v 3.6 dude installed on 5.x or 6.x routeros can cause high CPU load on router, even on x86 model.

Agreed. I like The Dude because I've been using MikroTik RouterOS since before RouterBoard made any products. Since v2. I went to the 2 day MUM precursor in Vegas, was that 2003? RouterBoard was making 4 port Ethernet cards and RouterOS on an IDE flash drive. Along with others here, I'd be pleased to contribute to the development of Dude monetarily. I also agree with others about what The Dude does for the image of the company. It is a, could be, a flagship driving sales. I'm even fine with branding like Spiceworks, where a request is addressed by vendors who pay the freight for Spiceworks. Clearly it is a business model that works.

Please, offer Mikrotik users the opportunity to support The Dude Project.

Or tell us to #sand and look for an alternative to The Dude so we give up hope and move on.

+1 Again.

Normis, When we talked at MUM in Sydney you said Dude would receive some love when CCR and ROS 6 were released.

I really think it's time you (Mikrotik) made a decision on the Dude. Either release an update, release it to the wild or let everyone know that development is over.

I'm now testing several other products to move to for monitoring as I can't deal with lack of development any longer. We have 150 Mikrotik Routers and I'll continue to use them. But to me Dude was a unifying solution to my network and monitoring that has glued me together and kept me Mikrotik. I still get WOW moments when I turn up on site for a customer and do a Discovery of their network, I explain it, then start talking about lack of development and bugs and they carry on with their Ruckus or Ubiquity products. I could integrate so much more Mikrotik based on the Dude alone...

You're doing yourself a dis-service (did you hire Steve Balmer?) by stagnating. Make a decision. Just read this thread again and make a bloody decision....

Bloody hell (please pardon my French and bad English).
If the number of developer's staff is the only problem find/hire one more (or two).
Even if they are novice they can do minor changes/bug fixes and will eventually make some real progress.
The effect of their work could be enormous for all of us who use your software/hardware products.
It's unbelievable that a company of such size as Mikrotik is today doesn't have enough resources to do it
(or wisdom to realize the potential benefits of bug-fixed/updated Dude).

The idea of opening source of The Dude (in my opinion) is unrealistic because of too many reasons.

So, dear Mikrotik, please hire someone to continue work on The Dude, there is a lot of us willing to act as a free beta testers.
Thanks in advance (for being reasonable).

Regards,
M.

Re: Dude v4beta3 released

Mon Oct 21, 2013 10:35 pm

Since my post I have been reviewing many other monitoring tools. After a lot of reading and testing... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... ng_systems I have decided on Zenoss, Nagios and ICINGA came close second equal. I'm currently installing and migrating my monitoring and mapping data across and exploring some of the other useful tools available in an actively developed and supported product.

500+ Devices, 30+ Maps, 20+ Subnets, SNMP, Graphing, Performance data and whatever else I can get across from 6 years of Dude Data. Along with the rapid growth we're having all based on Mikrotik kit.

The Dude does (did) so much for me and I may continue to use it for smaller sites and client monitoring but as my business grows I need the assurance of a product that is not only actively maintained and developed but where the operating comapny is honest and open with development to the community it is supposed to support.

A (great) Free product managed badly does more damage to your reputation than a good paid product. I always thought Mikrotik was better than that, It was exciting to be part of it (since ROS 2.9.?).. now I guess my opinion of Mikrotik is just another ho-hum hardware company with contempt for their customers and lack of engagement. It's not too late... Just reply and let your customers (supporters) know where you're at.

Sorry for the lecture, but really dissapointed.

Thank you, best regards,

Hi guys

we need answers and honestly it looks like a suicide strategy:

1) there is the demand and I guess nobody would complain if you charge 100 Euros/year per dude license
2) there is the code base
3) you can find 2-3 engineers to develop the code and still be profitable

We still don't know the problem about a new version of the dude, and I guess we will never know but let us know what you want to do so everybody can reorganize to monitor our networks.

Let's us know what you want to do asap, or you will loose brand credibility and customer base.

See you in Venice!

I think a crowdfunding model like indiegogo or kickstarter would be perfect for dude. The only complain is the lack of a official state from mikrotik.

+1 crowd funding.

I've just been doing the rounds (again) as I always do after a decent network session with the dude, I just can't believe it's been left in the cold to die. If I were to see a roadmap and a new release I would gift Mikrotik $1000, that's what it would cost me per month for some commercial tools to do what I currently do with Dude. Mikrotik could really make some real $ with active dude development... more and more I look for alternatives that do what the dude can as simply and as easily and more and more I come back here to plea with Mikrotik to listen to their users!

In my opinion Mikrotik should fork "The Dude".

Leave the current version as-is and start a new version that has a commercial paid subscription model, this will allow them to fund full-time developers working on the product.

Because "The Dude" is free and does not generate revenue, the owners of Mikrotik are focusing resources on products that do generate revenue e.g. CCR/Routerboard while The Dude is being abandoned.

Which is a shame, a license model would see at least enough revenue to fund 1 Developer. I've talked to many people who have played with it, liked it but been turned off by lack of release support and commitment.

Count me in as a +1 on licensing. I'd have no problem paying for a license for The Dude if it meant product updates and feature enhancements.

Another couple of licencing schemes that work well for other Network Monitoring systems that Mikrotik might consider for The Dude:

- Free up to X number of devices, then paid per available in licence blocks of 10,20,50 and 100 devices
- Unlimited monitoring of devices but NO advanced features e.g. alerting/upgrading unless paid contract
- Unlimited monitoring of devices but only store 1 days worth of historical data unless paid contract

I guess they need a way to give people a "taste" of The Dude, but still make money from it.

I've just been going through all the MSP RMM Platforms

Naverisk
N-Able
Kaseya
Centrastage
GFI
etc...

For a real simple real easy return, what about $1 per device per month. I have 200 devices on my Dude and for active development and bug fixing as well as a clear roadmap I'd be happy to pay per device.

wow that's way to much for the dude! these RMM products do patch management, av monitoring, integrated backup etc between 1 and 3/m for the most part. The dude is just a snmp monitor with a graphical representation.

Anyway:
1) working PPC 4.x version?? ever?
2) The Dude *is* effectively dead, it's abondonware.

there's nothing quite like the dude. it's limited in scope, but what it does, it does well. the map with lines representing bandwidth and link status is extremely useful for a micro-noc. I've used 'tik routers to build VPN clouds for business and put a small atom box with a big LCD and dude running in for this purpose.

NetXMS does all that and more. You can even build a custom dash or put dials and graphs for disk, cpu and traffic monitoring.

Also, it has native agents and clients for Linux, Windows and Android.

There is a web interface for the Linux and Windows builds that I have not used yet, but it looks good.

The support is impressive and you can buy support contracts if needed (in my budget this year).

The developers are serious about the product and they release regular updates.

I have found it to be a very good replacement for Dude.

Screenshots can be found here: http://www.netxms.org/screenshots/
Features list: http://www.netxms.org/details/

I was really angry that MT did not support Dude properly. I am OK again now that I have found NetXMS, it solves all my problems.

Lastly, the software is free and open source!!!!

That's a nice list of messages to come to work to after a day off. I'm definately going to try NetXMS. Visually it looks less mature / impressive than the dude, but I can see some quick releases and good support on it.

Cheers for the heads up!

We use The Dude as a primary tool for real-time monitoring from version dude-install-0.1beta15 2005.

Currently we monitor a lot of systems of a CPD 1000 square meters and communications equipment from more than 200 clients.

It's a shame if it is abandoned. I think a large majority would be willing to pay to ensure the continuity of the product.

We would, of course.

Why you do not do a survey? I think the result will be surprised.

Rergards from Spain !!

+500 to all....

Special for old latvians, who was born in USSR and undertand what i mean:

"... и тишина" (с) "Неуловимые..."

But if seriously: it's very bad idea to killing good product.
We all waiting Your reaction on our posts and continue of Dude developing.

+1

Please let us know what we can do to move the Dude forward. It is a great tool, with a lot of features that anyone running a MikroTik network can find very useful.

We received the new product flyer today. We are looking forward to the new mANT30 dish with the precision alignment mount.

The Dude is more than a device monitoring tool, it gives us a quick look into the Mikrotik equipment configs along with their status.

Please continue to upgrade it, release it SAAS, License it, or release it to open source. Just let us know if we can continue to count on it.

The Dude doesn't even install on MIPSBE with RouterOS 6.14.

I think that sources of The Dude have been lost, that's why there are no updates, not even minor, for such a long time. The Dude used to be the best monitoring software ever. But it's now dead.

Anybody in charge care to respond?

Just another +1 hoping the Dude development lives on. We use the dude every day for our 1500+ device mikrotik network.
Have a free version and then a pay version for larger networks to recoup costs @ programmer time.

Or, let us at the code .. open source :D

A few updates that would save us hours daily:
*highlight a bunch of devices on map, and execute cli commands on them all (mass config changes)
*backup config per device easily, automatically
*scheduled auto upgrades
*100 more..

Reading this topic there is one thought: MT staff don't care about Dude. Dude is dead. There is no reasonable response from them about that.

Does anyone else have a problem with the link colors? They are not updated properly when for example the link is full and the full color is set to red, parts of the link become red and not the whole link. It's frustrating. I hope they pick up the development of dude.

Also here's an old attempt of a dude inspired project that I tried:

http://www.jnodes.net

you can create a map and if you allow snmp queries from the ip that the site is hosted, you can get live data.

Give it up people. This thread has been +1'ing for more dev on the Dude for well over a year, on top of all the other "please update" topics.

And MT's *ONLY* response is to some passing comment to say it is still available for download while managing to ignore every other post? Amazing.

Nothing wrong with current dude. Just needs updates, bugfix, roadmap and communication. I don't think it needs re-created. It's a network tool, dedicated server, doing its thing. You could add a webinterface on it, but why go back to the drawing board?

maybe because theres a bug in the core of the program/design or perhaps it is just not competitive. Free software doesnt actually need to stand out, it just needs to be easy to use and work. I really do like to use Dude but i really want there to be server for routerboard such as the CCR so it can be the center of the network and map out networks more effectively while saving power by not having your standard desktops to be kept turned on for monitoring and mapping.

Routerboards use very little watts.

Dude doesn't use much for resources. No reason you couldn't run it in a virtual machine on one of your existing servers.

Greestings.
For the first of all Dude is the real THE DUDE, easy, fast, and verry functional monitoring software. I try'it and in few hours server are up and monitoring a few hundred of devices. What about bugfix is there one that i can't see here on forum explanation. It : charts, monitoring of the data are almost real time (verry fast) but drawing charts take's a while in i5 core machine is a problem with soft or nework. It there any help for the moment to draw chart's or waiting for bugfix. Also maybe this problem aren't on 3.6 version, but i'm stuck with back-up on 4 version. Any help ?

Me too. Sorry to say that. I remember a lot. I was at the first MUM ever. I remember The Dude announcement on MUM Praguje. I remember silence about Dude at tenth MUM in Prague. I have been using Dude till today, however, it seems to be inevitable leave Dude for me now. As I wrote here before, I would be even paying 200 USD for new version and probably I'm not allone in this. I will have to migrate to another system this year.

We would also gladly pay an annual fee or something for an updated and maintained DUDE!

The DUDE is very nice to use, and I do not understand why Mikrotik does not give it more love!

If it is a cost issue, then just set aside/hire own group of developers for The DUDE and make it a separate product, I am totaly sure the userbase of Mikrotik products are big enough and willing to pay for a product like The DUDE if that is what it takes to reignite this project!

So please Mikrotik, RE-BOOT the DUDE PROJECT! It is a testimony in itself that you still have a lot of users YEARS after you stopped developing it!
And I personally do not want to have the hassle of migrating to another solution(But sadly will soon have to seriously consider it after all this time)!

I Love Mikrotik! I love The DUDE! Plz REBOOT! :)

It is probably more question of willingness than budget on mikrotik side, I think. Or, they are prepairing some surprise for us. Like with android client - there were some requests for that, huge silence from mikrotik and now: Big bang! it is out, you can test the android client using winbox protocol...

Maybe one day, who knows, maybe there will be one big supersurprise with dude v.5.

I wish.

Yes. That's the problem.

But as all competitors start to offer cloud based monitoring/management solutions MT will have to have the will.
Newest announcement is from cambium. I prefer the dude and I prefer a local installed system.
But now I cant use the dude for upgrading as packages are no longer compatible ...

If you add the 'ping' service on the device you want, then it will generate graphs based on the ping rtt on the History Tab of the device.

Keep in mind though that it's pretty much not usable since if you have other services also it will monitor them too and the History graphs will become unreadable.

Dear Network Engineers,

i am creating a online petition to ask mikrotik to release The Dude Source code. If you never heard of it, the dude is a extremely powerfull application to manage SNMP networks and devices of any brand. If you like the idea please sign the petition and help us spread the idea.

Dude packages for ros were retracted some time ago due to incompatibility with newer ros versions.

Anyone checked The Dude 4b3 with newest ROS?

After upgrading from 6.32.3 to 6.33, the [Device.RosVersion] is missing in network map.
So I have a dozen of Tiks and no idea what version they are.

This makes me a very unhappy dude :(

Dear cszolee79,
Open Dude settings, go to "Map" tab, open "Device Appearance" and in "Label" part change "ROS:[Device.RosVersion]" to

ROS:[oid("iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.mikrotik.mikrotikExperimentalModule.mtXRouterOs.mtxrLicense.mtxrLicVersion.0")]

Not a problem with monitoring of 6.33 devices by dude 4b3.

I have just moved the dude from one server to another just by file export - import. It was smooth and without any problems.

Maybe the combined / individual packages can be the difference. I use individual packages only and do not see any such problem. Try it...

Dear cszolee79,

Yes You need to update "mikrotik.mib" file in "c:\program files\dude\data\mibs" folder.
Download it from Here

Hey Dudes :-)

We are using The Dude as a local monitoring tool for many devices and special snmp probes. It is really a great and very lean program for such a purpose. Since we started using the dude, its data base file got bigger and bigger and we experienced some missbehave of notifications and other stuff. Instead of a fresh clean install we tried to find a way to clean/repair the existing data base. Mainly because the effort for a full regonfiguration would be to high. So, thats how I found this thread, where at the beginning is described to vacuum the dude.db file (defragment it).
As I tried this with sqlite3, I always had the Error of "unique constraint failed". After some diagnosis, I found that the table <chart_values_raw> was corrupted and could not be editted.

So, I tried to get rid of this and found a way to clean it up.

Hope this will be helpful to anyone...

Dude database maintenance/repair describtion:

Preparation:
A1. Close Dude Service und Dude.exe
A2. Download sqlite3 and create the folder \Downloads\sqlite3 https://www.sqlite.org/download.html
A3. Search Dude database file, such as-> C:\Users\"user"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Dude\data\dude.db
A4. copy dude.db in Downloads\sqlite3\...

Database maintenance:
B1. start sqlite3.exe
B2. execute <.open dude.db> (open dude.db)
B3. execute <pragma integrity_check;> (perform integrity check)
B4. execute <vacuum;> (defragment database)
B5. in case B3. and/or B4. fails -> go on to "Repair database"
B6. in case both commands run without Error, put dude.db file back in user folder
B7. in user folder, delete any existing <dude.db-journal> and <dude.view> files
B8. start dude and service

Repair database:
<<<All history data will be lost>>>
C1. run cmd with admin
C2. change into sqlite3 directory
C3. execute <echo .dump | sqlite3.exe dude.db > dude.sql> (export dude.db into sql text file)
C4. edit dude.sql file with notepad++
C5. save all lines starting with <INSERT INTO "objs"> into a new textfile <objs.sql>
C5. in user folder delete dude.db , dude.db-journal and dude.view files
C6. start dude (new empty dude.db file will be created)
C7. close dude and copy new dude.db file into sqlite3 folder
C8. start sqlite3 and execute <.open dude.db>
C9. execute <pragma integrity_check;> (check dude.db)
C10. with <delete from objs;> delete entries in objs
C11. with <.read objs.sql> data from objs.sql will be importet into dude.db
C12. <.quit> to close sqlite3
C13. put new dude.db file from sqlite3 folder back into user directory
C14. in user folder, delete any existing <dude.db-journal> and <dude.view> files
C15. start dude and service. all settings will be back, just without history values
C16. as soon, everithing works well, do a backup export out of dude. The new file should be much smaller in size
