Active Internet Connection Checking w/dependency

Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:04 am

We've been using The Dude in our office for about 2 years now, and it's great. However, we've been having some major stability issues with our ISP that The Dude's machine is connected to; the modem tends to lock up.

The problem is that during this outage time, The Dude will of course report that all services are offline at our remote sites. Once the modem is reset and the connection is restored, we get flooded with notification messages as all of the services that The Dude is monitoring come "back online" after the outage.

What we'd like to do is use a generic connection check for internet connectivity to a service such as google.com. We've already set this up; no problem there. The prospect of setting up dependencies for 50 different networks is a giving us a bit of a headache; what I'd like to know is if it's possible to make dependencies between network maps, and if so, how can you go about doing so? The way I have it envisioned is that we have our different network maps, and then some sort of a master network map that all of the others are in, then linked as a simple few dependencies in that map to the internet connection check.

Also, is there a smarter way to do this that we're not thinking of right now, or another setting in The Dude that simply checks for an active outgoing net connection?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Believe there is a dependency item that you could use.

So it would be best to create a dependency for each location to one central "internet connection" check? There's no existing setting for "is internet connection good" at this time?

no, each device depends on the next one, so if the next one dies, you will not be notified also about it's child devices. example:

pc1 --> pc2 --> pc3 --> pc4 --> internet

if pc4 dies, you will not get notifications about pc3, pc2 and pc1 if you set up dependencies like I indicated with the arrows. if you do not do that (like you have now), you will get alarms for all failed PC 1,2,3,4

Ok. So in short, there is no global internet connection check for The Dude.

I'll start going through and adding a dependency for each router to a global check such as "google.com" or somesuch. Thanks!

Oh, still had that other question; can you create dependencies between different network maps?
