The Dude is dead. Move on.

Sun Apr 29, 2012 11:53 am

As much as I love The Dude, it's clearly no longer a focus for Mikrotik. While other vendors continue to develop their management and monitoring tools, The Dude is still stuck in Windows land, doesn't work on PPC (>1 year and counting without a fix), and the versions that do work under RouterOS have major issues and limitations (like the web interface not working).

Mikrotik should come clean and admit that they are no longer developing the Dude, and allow everyone to move on to other alternatives rather than keeping everyone hanging in the wings hoping in vain for something magical to happen.

Answer for my last bug report in dude 4.0 beta3 on RB433UAH - 26-04-2012.
Thank you very much for the report. We will try to fix both of them.
Both problems are actual for Dude intstalled on RouterBOARD.
sorry for my english

Don't hold your breath, v4b3 was released in March 2011 and hasn't been updated since, as I said >1 year despite all of the various bugs and issues it has (e.g. not working on PPC).

And when I said "windows interface not working" I meant "web interface not working".

Well you get what you pay for! I for one would love to see more features added to it. SNMP write among them. More support for non-mikrotik hardware such as Canopy would be awesome! We'd even pay for the software at that point. But for now it gets the job done and cost much much less than the Motorola/Cambium option!

There was a thread about alternatives and only one that seems close in functionality is intermapper (not free).

I wish there were an official statement if The Dude were dead or not. I think it is a great product and no alternatives free or otherwise can compete because of the RouterOS integration. We are 100% MikroTik shop (router-wise) and have come to know and love the Dude over the past years. Really if we could just get a 4.X PPC package that worked I would be happy. Most of the edge routers that we deploy are PPC (RB1100/RB1200) and we would like to deploy the Dude package on these routers to use as an Agent.

Please let us know if The Dude is abandoned or not so we know whether or not to abandon hope.

This thread is dead. Move on.

For those of us using the dude now for many years and still finding ways to make it do bigger and better things are tired of the whining about how the free 'beta' software doesn't work how they want it to work. Go buy one that does what you want it to do and quit cluttering up the forums, or post how well those other ones run on PPC.

It seems all efforts at Mikrotik are aimed to Router OS v6 and CCR. After the stable release of v6.0 we should start pressuring again about The Dude.

Is the Dude being developed or not?

I have run into a functional issue using SNMP where Dude only supports DES encryption for SNMPv3 and the device I need to monitor only uses AES.

What is Mikrotik's issue with developing Dude? Lots of people would pay for it to keep development going. It's a great product, but without further development it really will be dead. Like others who have posted it has been working just fine for us - up until now.

I'm sorry but there are no news about the Dude now. We are overloaded with new product support, and we don't have a dedicated Dude programmer at the moment. We have not forgotten about the Dude, and a new version is still planned someday.

So hire a new programmer. We are giving You incredibile amount of money for RB and You are not willing to give only the fraction of that money to another guy in mtk team. Very sad...

I've read this last night and still can't believe that this said above is THE reason why something as awesome as The Dude is isn't making any progress for the last 2 years.

You see that they are short on manpower when you look at nv2. How long it took to work and how long it takes to make progress. And nv2 is a key component of their wireless systems. Dude is for free.

It doesn't matter if they hire a programmer, open source, close source, 3rd party develop. Any thing will bring in more customers except putting off development.

What an incredible problem to have "we have too much work". There are people clamoring for work. Are you not profitable? Do you think for a second if your products were better you would not make more money?

They will gain customers through people who use the dude. They will sell more router boards because of the dude. They will have more people talking about the array of products because the people who looked for a network monitor will find the dude and see how awesome it is. If bugs were fixed users would be praising the dude.

I hate posting this kind of negative stuff. I really really love the product, everyone I have ever shown it to is impressed, I am still impressed even with the array of gotchas but you can't keep this practice up you will lose customers.

It's a joke. Partners organise trainings from MT software and the dude, but MT doesn't make updates.
In that past one user told that we can donate for the dude development - this idea isn't bad for me.
In anticipation on new The Dude release.

We would pitch in for a fund to progress Dude Development. Could we get a guarantee of development at a certain level of funding? We would be willing to run the fund as well. Any thoughts Normis?

Ha! Your dreaming. This is the same company that doesn't offered paid support at all and refers you to consultants just in the dark about issues as you are.

The dude really is dead and my advice would be to use something like PRTG for monitoring and alerting and the dude for a nice gui of your network
