Packet loss on RB5009 when using multiple WAN links

Tue May 09, 2023 2:33 pm

Morning all.

I have an RB5009 with 2 WAN links. Cable modem with a /29 IP Range, first assigned to the modem as a gateway and one assigned to the RB5009 statically, and the second is an FTTH PPPoE link with a routed /29. The PPPoE link gets a static IP and route when it starts and then a /29 is routed to me over that.

I have 2 wireuard VPN links to 2 separate upstream servers, and i am using Route Rules to send all traffic to one VPN server over one WAN link, and all traffic to the other over a second one. Essentially:

2 route Tables (along with the main). each has a static route to 0.0.0.0/0 to the next hop. main has only the primary default route in it, along with links to internal subnets.

then in the routing rules, i have a rule to server 1, the action looks up only in table WAN1. same with server 2 to WAN2.

Now, the weird part: when pinging the primary WAN 1 IP, I am getting upwards of 30-40% packet drops... and in some cases, more:
9392 packets transmitted, 3482 received, 62.9259% packet loss, time 9391023ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 13.636/22.802/54.533/3.981 ms
If I ping the cable modem, i am getting less than 0.2% packet loss over 24 hours. If i ping either the FTTH static IP assigned as PPPoE or one of the /29s assigned to an internal port, i am getting around the 0.2% or less loss...

Any ideas about what could be going wrong?

Thanks.

Well you could start by disabling fasttrack and see if it works better...

OMFG what a bloated firewall chain.
First advice is to get rid of most of the crap and concentrate on starting from default rules and only
concern yourself with needed traffic. THEN it will be much easier to troubleshoot any outstanding issues.

Will take a look at the rest later today.

I have done a little clean up and removed for unused rules, but no differece... I then disabled ALL firewall rules, all Mangle rules and all NAT rules... still getting missing packets...
