ax series lineup WiFi issues

Sun May 14, 2023 2:52 pm

I see quite a lot issues reported in forums about ax lineup WiFi issues, lets collect them here whit possible workarounds and fixes.

I have notices these issues:

1. The mostly known "rejected, can't find PMKSA". It affects my Samsung S22 the most, but I have also seen it affecting S10+ and my laptop whit Intel AX210 WNIC. This should be WPA3 related, if you disable it and use WPA2 only this issue should go away.

2. "association SA Query timed out" - it is 802.11w Protected Management Frame related. Looks like it started when i turned on FT (Fast BSS Transition (802.11r)).

Please don't post about slow WiFi speeds, that's another story, post only issues that make WiFi unstable or otherwise are software or hardware related.

Here's mine. Been meaning to send support an email and supout but keep forgetting to generate it. Gonna do that the next time it dies.

I have had very few "can't find PMKSA" errors. It's always "key handshake timeout" when the wifi hangs.

hAP ax3 v7.9
13 May 3:50am. ax3 7.9. Wifi uptime: 7 days 2hrs.

hAP ax3 v7.10beta
14 May 5:00pm. ax3 7.10beta5. Wifi uptime: 1 days 12hrs.
15 May 12:20pm. ax3 7.10beta5. Wifi uptime: 7 hrs 20 mins.
(I had FT turned on. Maybe shouldn't have done that. Back to off.)
18 May 8:00am. ax3 7.10beta5. Wifi uptime: 3 days 6 hrs.
19 May 9:16am. ax3 7.10beta5. Wifi uptime: 1 days 1 hr.

I disabled WPA2 and for now I'm only using WPA3 on ax2, and for now it's working without any problem, uptime 5d 6h. I was getting PMKSA errors only when WPA2/WPA3 was selected. I'm running 7.10beta5

I bought my routers before cap ax was released... So now there is no chance to explain my wife that we need yet another APs...

I was thinking about setting up capsman but i don't have third device that should act as controller... And that is just another layer of complexity... And just for roaming...

AX, AX2, AX3 and cAP AX can all be used as controller, even for their own radios.

Is it worth the trouble for just 2 AP ?

Topic related, two PMKSA errors for 2.4 GHz on ax2 after almost 6 days but wifi is still working, it didn't crash or anything.

I do use capsman at home for 2 APs, its a learning opportunity.

Oh but for learning there is no problem.
It's just not needed. I have AX2 and AX3 at home, no capsman.

I have toyed with it too (briefly) to see differences with legacy capsman (I used to have a setup with that for another place) but some of the quirks need to be ironed out before I will try it again.
Or is VLAN handling for ether-ports now sorted out properly ?
Last time I tried it, all VLAN handling needed to be disabled on AP-bridge, hence also for ether-ports.

Yea, i was thinking about that, just to try it, I saw some default configutations on Mikrotik wiki.

Sooo... I ordered two cAP ax... you know... for when drivers get even better...

I never had issues whit VLANs in general, but I did had issue whit interface dynamic add to bridge (so I did it manually). As I revisited config its now working as it should, but system is not perfect. Maybe I don't know how to do it the right way, but now, afaik, I have to tag interface in capsman interface list and on AP datapath. By logic I understand that server does not know APs datapaths, so this have to be set manually per AP, but vlan tagging should be passed from server, only server side configuration required.

I am planning to do tutorials, but not right now. For that I need time and be sure my knowledge is solid, so I'm not spreading false information.

Interfaces crashed? Like ax2 reported? Or device itself? autosup should be created if device crashes.
When its wifi dies, the ax3 is still running. Switch, ethernet and containers all ok. Just that nothing connects to the wifi anymore. Logs show “handshake key timeout” whenever any device tries to connect. Nothing in the registration table. For both 2.4 and 5Ghz.

Does enable/disable of the interfaces helps ? Or you have to reboot the router ?

What does wifi scan app say? Aka, beacons are fine? Anyone tried sniff WiFi interface and station to see what frames are there?

WPA2/WPA3 combo and WPA3 only. On 7.10beta5 i'm using only WPA3 and there are no problems at all. That is why i ordered cap ax, wifi on mikrotik, at least for me, is starting to work like it should and ax2 is needed elsewhere.

I'm still thinking about trying capsman but i don't know, multiple ssid, vlans etc... Only real benefit is roaming... but that i plan to solve by reducing tx power and using ACL. That seems to me like a much easier approach.

At my parents house is ax2, on ROS 7.8 and i leave only WPA2, older phones and i didn't want to risk potential problems with wifi

Try only WPA2 or WPA3.

Little update:

I recieved my 2 cap ax, those things are huge... My old cap ac looks like a shirt button when compared to cap ax

Little update:

So WPA3 only, phone connects to 5 GHz, but 573 MHz speed only (channel width 80 MHz) and laptop connects to 2.4 GHz, no error for now. For comparison, on ax 2, same settings phone and laptop connects to 5 GHz no problem.

EDIT: It was my stupidity... I forgot to set country... now all devices connects to 5GHz and full speed, no errors.

Ever since the 7.9 upgrade I'm have this exact same problem and am having to reboot every couple days. I opened a support request and provided my supout.rif file.

Quickly loosing patient with this problem, hopefully they'll fix it soon, and will return the product if I have to keep rebooting it for another week.

By default TX power is at maximum ? Right now I have only one cAP ax operational, another one is in the box.

I think that next weekend i will replace U6 lite with cap ax, i think that wifi is now stable enough for me. Only, i will have to leave WPA2 so my wife can connect to wifi with her laptop

Switching from 5 to 2.4 GHz works, i tested that today, no problems or errors in logs.

Still rebooting everyday and I have WPA3 disabled. Before the 7.9 upgrade everything worked great.

No response from Mikrotik support on my support ticket.

Would installing the 7.10 beta help?

Glad to here it all seems to be working out for you. I have my cAP ax (wpa2/wpa3 5G&2.4G V-7.10) upstairs and hAP ax (wpa2 2.4G V-7.9) in my living room. when I walk in the house from the Kitchen my phone connects to the 2.4G cAP ax upstairs if I then walk upstairs it switches over to 5G, if I then walk back into my living room my phone will then move to the hAP ax. So all good.
Stability is the best it's been so far in this product line!

I have a problem with my hAP ax, it used to just reboot itself for no reason. It turns out that the power socket/switch is faulty. I've ordered a new socket and will fit it in due course. In the mean-time I'm using the PoE Injector that was provided with the cAP ax for power. So just a little food for thought to waggle and check the power socket.

@ajmxco

You should try 7.10b5, it's much more stable WiFi, i try it on ax3, ax2, cap ax and i have much better wifi experience than 7.9

@ToTheFull

Same here but with my previous setup with ax3 and ax2 i decreased TX power on ax2 downstairs so my devices connects to the upstairs ap once i move to rooms upstairs. And that worked quite good, a little bit of testing was needed ofc and i didn't need to use acl or capsman, it was "redneck roaming" haha.

Thanks for the info. With 7.10b5, do you have WPA3 enabled?

I installed the 7.10b5 + firmware and it lasted a few hours before showing the "key handshake timeout" errors again so I had to reboot it.

I have a router that needs rebooting 1-2 a day and a support ticket with zero response from Mikrotik. Ridiculous...

I'll process a refund on the device this week if Mikrotik support ghosts me.

I'm sorry to hear that 7.10b5 wasn't improvement for you, my ax2 works so much better now.

Maybe is something in your configuration ? Can you post it ?

Thanks for your help and below is my config from 7.8 (didn't change config with upgrade). Everything worked great before the 7.9 upgrade and I really want this to work. I hope support will contact me this week and I don't want to return the product.

For now, I've turn it off and am using an old HAP AC that works fine for now.

I think it's a driver crashing problem too and was hoping the 7.10b5 would fix it with the release note item mentioning "key handshake timeout". I updated my support ticket that this beta version didn't fix the problem.

I'll keep this forum post updated this week with my journey to get this fixed with support, if they help me.

Have you tried to reset to factory defaults and manually configure it?
I had a similar issue: WiFi outage and errors after the SW upgrade. In my case, it helped.

No errors in logs. Still, the WiFi stability is not perfect. I have a ping probe to one of my IOT devices, and I can see it loses connectivity almost every day.

Would downloading the 7.8 bits and downgrading solve this problem for the HAP ax2 until this getting resolved? Has this worked for anyone?

@ajmxco, Yes it works fine for me on 3 (ax2 and one ax lite), I have 20 days of connection time for some of my devices without major issues.

So at least for now and if you are not using the ax2 as router (or without ipv6) this is a viable workaround.

Best regards,

After downgrading to 7.8 + firmware, the wireless interfaces no longer showed up in winbox so I factory reset the unit. This still didn't fix the missing wireless interfaces.

I upgraded to 7.9.1 + firmware and the wireless interfaces are still missing so now I'm in a worse state of affairs. Wow this is crazy...

I'll update the support ticket with my new problem now and include the support.rif file.

Manual downgrade ?
Most likely you forgot wifiwave2 package.

Care to try again ?

Thanks for the tip and, after reading through some of the documentation and learning how to install packages, I'm back to 7.8 with wireless working again. I'll let this bake and see what happens...

Update - no issues since downgrading to 7.8 and support contacted me with an alpha release of 7.10 past b5 that might fix the problem. I hesitant to try this because I need stable wifi for the work week so maybe this weekend.

This issue is tricky. In my case, it was stable for 17 days and today it got back :(
Both WiFi were not accepting any clients. I had some time, so I tried to troubleshoot: I disabled WiFi for a while, disabled the security profile and also enabled debug on WiFi, but no luck. No obvious errors besides authentication.

Upgraded to 7.9.1 both ROS and RouterBoard. I hope it will be stable. One more outage and I'm switching back to old AC Asus.

I'm on 7.10rc1 for ax2 and ax3, using both wpa2/3 on purpose.
Not seeing this error anymore.

I installed a hAP ax³ late last week and upgraded it to 7.9.1. Last night, the SSIDs were suddenly no longer visible to clients and the indicator light for wireless activity was off on the device itself. Disabling and re-enabling the interfaces brought it back to life, but I saw no errors in the system log (i.e., no timeouts under the wireless topic). I didn’t have this problem with my ac³, but I also wasn’t using the WifiWave2 package on it.

Does not seeing errors but still experiencing what appears to be a driver crash match anyone else’s experience?

I tried turning off WPA2. I want WPA3. That did not fix it.

Did you opened support ticket ? Can you try netinstall ROS again ? That's strange... I never had problems with WPA3, only when used in combo with WPA2.

When you use only WPA2 do you get any errors ?

With only WPA2 I do not get those "can't find PMKSA" messages.

You should not get PMKSA errors, as it is WPA3 related. WPA2 does not have PMKSA.

I'm all good here now the SA timeout problem has subsided for some reason on one device that had an issue, as of today I'm now using wpa2/wpa3 ccmp/gcmp 5g only on hAP ax (7.10RC1) as Router. And my cAP ax 2.4g/5g is still storming along no issue still on 7.10 beta5 go figure!

The alpha version they sent me is 7.10beta8 + the fixes for this problem and I'll probably test it out this weekend.
Me too, great support as always.
Now I am testing the 7.10alpha237 version.
Did 7.10alpha237 fix this issue? I haven't had a chance to test it out yet...

For me yes, I'm using hAP ax3 as CAPsMAN Wave2 and two hAP ax2 as cAP.
Security WPA2/WPA3 without VLANs, everything perfect without errors for 8 days.

They probably want to do more tests to find the cause of the problem.
I'm leaving the beta until it crashes... hopefully never

Same issue here, I am using 7.10rc1 + hAP AX3 with WPA3 only (using plain dump hardware with no filtering).
Can stay 1 or 2 days and the WIFI is no longer visible and I have to reboot.

I just disabled PMKSA to test if things improve.

@S8T8

I'm using 7.10rc1, default wireless config, only changed country, WPA2/3 mixed, nothing special.

After 12 days I got PMKSA error with new phone, but after disabling and then enabling phone's wifi i got no error and phone connects to 5GHz radio.

I will pay more attention to logs for a few days now just to see if this is some kind of one time error now or it will get more common.

Update...

7.10alpha237 worked great w/o a reboot for a couple weeks then yesterday the "handshake timeout" errors came back, the wireless clients couldn't connect, and I had to reboot again. I updated my support ticket and included the support file.

I'm not going back to 7.8 since 7.10alpha237 lasted for a couple weeks and that's fine with me; for now.

Support did say they've been able to re-create this issue on their end so that's good news.

7.8 and before that one is where things are stable, any version past that has this problem. :?

Updated ROS to 7.10 stable, little bit of PMKSA errors at the beginning, after DFS check I needed to disable and enable wifi on phone and laptop because they didn't want to connect to 5 GHz WiFi.

Now we wait for another error, this one i will discard as router just booted up.

Another update.

Same problem just happened again today after being stable for a couple weeks. Rebooting fixed the problem. Very strange indeed...

For my setup, I've managed to find a pattern that might be legit. I've noticed that for versions greater than 7.8, when a couple Apple wireless devices (iphone, laptop, watch) connect this problem returns. When there are no Apple wireless devices connected, this problem doesn't happen. I'm not 100% sure about this but I'll continue monitoring.

Now,just upgraded to 7.10 and hopefully this wifi problem goes away.

Had to reboot again. I've sent several support files to support and notified them every time I've had to reboot. I don't want to downgrade to 7.8 again but I simply cannot use this product anymore in the current state.

I'm close to buying a different product and never using Mikrotik again.

Unfortunately we all depend on Mikrotik to solve this issue with firmware updates and it's a shame to see people like you that bought Mikrotik's AP and then they have problem with that.

I myself have two Ubiquiti U6 Lite AP as I was forced to buy them because ax2 and ax3 failed at providing me with stable WiFi and they are miles away from Mikrotik ax devices for now...

Only advice right now for you is just what you said, buy new AP because right now i think that drivers won't be stable in some short time.

For eg. now i have a problem with my phone not connecting to 5 GHz WiFi while i didn't have that problem with 7.10rc1

Recently I have updated to 7.10 Stable hoping that the problem would finally be fixed because it was mentioned in the changelog.
wifiwave2 - fixed key handshake timeout with re-associating clients;
Sadly the problem is still there and it looks like it occurs even more frequently than in 7.9.

I had to roll back to 7.8 again :(

We have introduced several improvements regarding the AX stability. It is still a work in progress, but in order to gather more feedback as soon as possible, here is a link to the latest alpha version that contains these fixes. The fixes are mainly targeted at the issue discussed in this thread - the inability of WifiWave2 interfaces to authenticate the clients.

Please treat it with caution. If you experience any wireless-related issues with this alpha build, then let us know at support@mikrotik.com

Tested on cAP ax, ax2, ax3 with several phones and laptops.

Running default config, only thing changed is country and cAP ax is in bridge mode, no router function, channel and frequency is set to auto (I had this manually set but i want to see how will mikrotik handle it on auto).

Before connecting devices to WiFi i forget network on all devices, just in case they maybe remembered wifi1 as unstable interface and i waited for DFS check to be over.

All devices connects to wifi1 (5 GHz) no problem and I didn't get PMKSA error like on 7.10 stable.

I'm glad and I think it's a good thing Mikrotik decided to release this alpha version to us for testing.

I'm testing the hAP ax with no changes at all. 5 hour uptime all devices, no devices dropped or giving errors so far so very positive today.
I didn't want to jump in and say it's all good but I feel it needs a mention for anybody thinking of testing on a hAP ax2 I would be happy to say go ahead.
Ok so I know @maigonis didn't want us to mention speed but I'm seeing an imbalance TX vs RX rates... anybody else?

Yea, this is from cAP ax, channel is set automatically. Did you set your channel manually ?

Yes manually set just to check what I was using like for like. I'm updating the cAP ax tomorrow if the hAP ax2 keeps behaving itself.
pretty impresed so far, I will then start testing auto and the dreaded radar frequencies to see how that goes now!

off to watch film...

I will setup ax2 tomorrow along with cAP ax and some devices will connect to ax2 some to cAP ax, it's not ideal as they are 1 meter apart... But for testing it will be fine, i will manually assign channels.

Enjoy the movie :D

We have introduced several improvements regarding the AX stability. It is still a work in progress, but in order to gather more feedback as soon as possible, here is a link to the latest alpha version that contains these fixes. The fixes are mainly targeted at the issue discussed in this thread - the inability of WifiWave2 interfaces to authenticate the clients.

Please treat it with caution. If you experience any wireless-related issues with this alpha build, then let us know at support@mikrotik.com
https://box.mikrotik.com/d/e700b4d034174bce8a22/
tested this, SUP-114237 is not fixed yet.
can connect only by downgrading to wpa-psk

Yeah it's just the 1 device that has played up so far, thats a wpa2 only device that Apple refuses to stop supporting gah!
I've moved on to testing Auto now and seeing how I get on with the "radar detected" situation I was having fun with last time I tried.
Any-who gong off topic here.

Now I've moved to 5500 Ceee I'm even again. It's more than like I've been on 5745 Ceee for so long you tend to notice small nuances.
Slowwly been moving around using Auto which has just kept moving me down in frequency to my delight. The reason I fixed the frequecy previously was because being kicked all over the place due to radar detection, we live on a big hill. Glad to say that now for some reason seems far better.

  2 A interface=wifi1 ssid="" mac-address=26: uptime=3h30m45s signal=-54 tx-rate=866.7Mbps rx-rate=866.7Mbps

I've come to a conclusion that some WiFi5 stuff just doesn't like the higher frequecies offered by the Wifi6 device ie stick to 5500 Ceee for a better
experience.
@gigabyte091 if you get chance can you try 5745-5805

All testing stopped for now because the device that was disconnecting is on a 24 hour test on a wifi5 AP just to make sure!

What is the best version to run - the Beta or the Alpha ?

The Beta appears to contain some of the fixes ?

7.11beta2 nothing changed, the same problem on AX3. Tried Netinstall on AX2 a couple of weeks ago, it have helped, no WIFI drops. Will try Netinstall on AX3 .

Hello!

Just my report.
I have same issues with key handshake timeout since (probably) 7.9
After upgrade to 7.10 this issue became annoying: I had to reboot router something between 10 minutes and 12 hours.
Today I gave up and downgraded to 7.8, will report how it goes.

Update: almost forgot. I also had to switch from WPA3 to WPA2 to make it work, but I did it on 7.10, not sure if WPA3 is broken in 7.8

Greetings to the community. I have the same issue with my hap ax3 after updating to 7.9 and then to 7.10 and today on 7.11beta2 did not solve the issue with the stability of WiFi, which stopped working 2 hours after updating to 7.11beta2 and the device had to be rebooted

I rode the roller coaster of this problem and eventually downgraded to 7.8 w/o issue (see my posts in this thread). I want to be part of the solution so I'll give 7.11beta2 a go this weekend and report back.

I'm having a much better exerience with hAP ax2 7.11-Alpha127 (7.11Beta2)
Installed beta2 on cAP ax today no issues do far, also notice since 7.7 the Radar Detection problems I was having have gone so thats a Big Plus.
speeds and signal have varied since 7.5 on my hAP ax2 at least so it's an on-going journey which is getting better i'm happy to say.

Compared to what ? On my tests ax2 performed better than U6 Lite. And I'm not biased, I switched to Ubiquiti because Mikrotik wireless had a lot of problems back then...

I totally agree BUT did anyone manage to get VLAN Slave interfaces (for guest wifi) up an running via capsman?

If I set the VLAN tag in the capsman configuration it is NOT passed to the cap interface and therefore this is not dynamicly added to the tagged vlan of the caps bridge.

local interfaces without capsman work fine this way…

I add the guest interface to the bridge manually and set up the VLAN. It is not a nice solution. If i change anything on CAPSMAN side the name of the slave interface will be changed on the CAP and i have to reboot the CAP to restore the interface name/numbering otherwise the bridge config will be failed.

Roaming is soooo awesome! I have 3 CAP an CAPsMAN running on my 1100ahx4… Found out: running CAPsMAN on a CAP seems not so to be a bright idea.

You can select and add ALL dynamic interfaces into the bridge. Then, when new/changed guest intrface is created, it is added automaticaly to the bridnge.

I still have ocassional wifi drop every few days but this time nothing in the log, it just says client disconnected.
It's on latest beta 7.11.

After reboot everything works again, On 7.8 there is no problem, everything is smooth.

Okay. It failed on 7.8 after some time. There are "key handshake timeout" in log and >20% CPU utilization.
I've disabled 80MHz channel width (20/40 now on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz), enabled FT, disabled WPA3 (now on WPA2) and upgraded to 7.11b2.

It worked for more than 24 hours, but now it failed again, so I gave up and added a reboot script to be ran every 10 minutes on the home server.
It should be installed onto Mikrotik itself, but I'm not good at writing scripts for MT.
#!/bin/bash

REBOOT_CMD="/system/reboot"
MT_HOST="main_router"
MT_USER="secretuser"
MT_PORT=123456
LOG_LIMIT=20
DEBUG=true

log() {
        local ts=$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M)
        [ "$DEBUG" = "true" ] && echo $ts : $@
        logger -t "check_mikrotik" "$@"
}

num_syslog=$(cat /var/log/syslog | grep wireless,debug | tail -100 | grep "key handshake"  | wc -l)

log "num_syslog=$num_syslog limit:$LOG_LIMIT"

[ $num_syslog -gt $LOG_LIMIT ] && log "Limit exceeded, rebooting" && ssh -p $MT_PORT ${MT_USER}@${MT_HOST} $REBOOT_CMD </dev/null

Devices started to reconnect, key handshake timeout messages started to fill log. It wasn't after 10 minutes, at least now I see devices that connected 8.5 hours ago and still up.

I have tried 7.8 and faced the same issue.

Update: I've also noticed that enabled 80MHz on 5GHz increases the instability (reduces time between fails).
Another observation is that Apple devices (iPhone and MacBook) stayed connected while Android phones and my Linux notebook failed to connect (with "key handshake timeout" diagnostics in wireless debug log).

I had the failure with "key handshake timeout" again today, 2 nd time in roughly a week. I run CAPSMAN wifiwave2 with 2 HAP-AX3 and 1 HAP-AX2. Suddenly one HAP-AX3 refused connection on 5GHz. However, I was still able to connect to 2,4 GHz on the same CAP, where I use WPA/WPA2 security only due to old devices. Tried to disable/enable 5G-wifi, no luck. Changed from WPA2/3 to WPA/WPA2 on 5 G, no luck. Changed to AC-only on 5G, no luck. Eventually rebooted this CAP, woks fine again.
Ticket raised with supout to support...

Interesting... I will try CAPsMAN this weekend, RB4011 as controller, 2 cap ax as CAPs, no VLANs, basic for now, just to see if it will be stable. For now i don't have any problems.

I have a setup with RB5009 as capsman server, 2 cAP AX and 1 AX3 running for quite a while (11 days and counting).
No VLANs for now.
All on 7.10.

Apart from 1 SW update (otherwise it would be over 20 days already), no hickups whatsoever.
There is even a network enabled machine connected for over 8 days straight, no problems with it.

Only noticeable entries I see in log are related to devices coming in and devices going out of range.
No deauth errors, no PMKSA errors, nada.

Sooo, maybe I retire U6 Lite soon and go back to Mikrotik wireless again. I don't see any errors in logs whatsoever.

I mean, im running basic setup but i don't see reason the reason wifi will not work with vlans.

I have hAPAX's running in the house now with CAPSMAN and all is well but for the Epson Workforce 435 printer no longer connecting. The log shows:

00:26:AB:CC:E3:B2@cap-wifi7 rejected, invalid MDE

Google is not much use to me, it must be something deeply technical in the Wifi spec.

The only concern here is if and when I start deploying AX devices to clients that I don't start having issues with equipment that might be old but otherwise working well and "buy a new scanner/printer" isn't a solution for clients.

Hmmm ...
It has the value of proving the whole concept is not totally broken since it works at least for 1

I have read statements that 7.8 may be stable? Is that true? So downgrading to 7.8 may help until bug is fixed?

Depending on what you do with those caps, you may want to reconsider ...
7.8 was (up til 7.10 and later) the more stable one for wifi.
But it was only with 7.9 default script was added for caps mode.

So when you are able to configure everything yourself, no problem.
If you rely on default script to handle caps mode, you need at least 7.9 (which is to be avoided).

Sooo, maybe I retire U6 Lite soon and go back to Mikrotik wireless again. I don't see any errors in logs whatsoever.

I mean, im running basic setup but i don't see reason the reason wifi will not work with vlans.
Dont make mistake. UBNT wireless is superior compared to buggy Mikrotik wireless. Stay with UBNT!

Right now, Mikrotik wireless is working without a problem, at least for me, without any bugs and I never really intended to stay on UBNT, just until Mikrotik sort their wireless right. (Some of us need to stay on Mikrotik and test it until they got it perfect). Also I'm not really fan of mixing vendors together, if I use Mikrotik, I want to stay on Mikrotik.

UBNT is working great, their app is awesome, and configuration is really easy but I don't like the fact that I have to have dedicated controller or, like I saw that some vendors don't even have anything but cloud based management. I want local management and I like when I can log into device from browser. (I use winbox but I have an option to log from browser)

But those are just my personal preferences.

And in iperf3 tests I got faster speeds on ax2 than on U6-Lite for eg.

Worked OK to downgrade - all config remained... Let´s hope it is more stable, though...

Got two cAP ax, managed with wifiwave2 capsman from RB3011, all at version 7.10.1 - 99% of devices work except HP Printer (PageWide Pro MFP 477dw)
I tried several attempts to create configuration that would comply to 802.11n 5GHz dual band printer capabilities, but simply wireless network is not listed in there.
I assume it is because of the Channel extension ax, because whatever I do I cannot make it to run without it, current status is (5745/ax/Ceee).
However if I list radio capabilities there are all flavors 5745/a, 5745/n, 5745/n/Ce, 5745/ac, 5745/ac/Ce, 5745/ac/Cee, 5745/ax, 5745/ax/Ce, 5745/ax/Cee (Country Netherlands)

Is it possible to somehow specify the channel, for example, 5745/n?

Of course this would be the SSID for printer network only, the rest is running fine on ax... I appreciate any ideas :)

A bit of a problem there ... you can only change radio behavior on the main radio.
Any slave radio with a different SSID, will use the same radio settings.
When you specify a channel as ax, any device connecting with N or AC should be able to connect (at least that's my experience).
So I am going to make an educated guess the problem is not with the channel but the security settings.

But ... as it happens to be I also have one of those with a customer I work for.
And those things can only connect to 2.4GHz, not 5GHz as far as I know ?
I even went back to check the product manual, it clearly says so: 2.4GHz only.
HOWEVER: the features page does indicate dual band 802.11n incl 5GHz.
So go figure.

Can you try using 2.4GHz SSIDs ? Try an SSID with only WPA, nothing else and no encryption. For testing even no security at all (just for testing).

If you want to try further using 5GHz, setting the channel can be done on multiple places:

In configuration you can specify which channel or band to use. That config is then applied on the radio (if possible).
Or
On the radio, you can specify the channel/band directly (tab with the logical name ... channel  ).
Keep in mind, priority of settings is from left to right in Winbox. Setting on the left has priority over the same setting on the right.
If you set channel directly on radio, the one set in config is not taken into account anymore.

Thank you @holvoetn for the reply, I learned a lot and here are my findings:

I managed to make it work with 2GHz G on channel 2422/g with security WPA/WPA2, I left ciphers choice without any selection.
I tried all radios on 5GHz and on 2GHz and the only one that works is the one from above, so now when I list the networks on printer's display, I can find the SSID finally
What I will try to do next is to see if I can update printer's firmware, maybe that will help.

Now the tricky part...
A bit of a problem there ... you can only change radio behavior on the main radio.
Any slave radio with a different SSID, will use the same radio settings.
So this means that we need to sacrifice one of the radios for legacy devices?
Although we are able to make security, channel and configuration profiles, we are still not able to make radio profiles, correct?

Not really.

You don't have to sacrifice a radio for legacy device. But you will have to accept those legacy devices will slow down your network on that radio for all other devices. Slowest one dictates the pace.
Consider it an opportunity to get rid of those dinosaurs

If on that radio you set a slave interface with another SSID, it will use the same radio settings (channel and band).
Security settings however can be different on a slave interface.
Radio settings not, they come from the master. Channel is a radio setting. So is band (AX, B/G/N, N-only, ...)

Allright....@holvoetn this took a bit of our precious time, so final verdict - printer is working fine on 2G AX (2422/ax/Ce)
The problem was that I left too much unset.. so the frequency range  . Somehow controller was always setting the frequency in one of the channels 12 (2467Hz), 13 (2472Hz) and/or 14 (2484Hz) which are not supported by the printer interface

I configured 2G master for channels 1-12 (2412-2462) e voila! I tried to do the same for 5G, but that does not work yet. tried several frequencies from the scanned list none work

As you mentioned previously, Radio settings cannot be changed in slave interfaces and I am happy that I solved this issue this way, thank you very much for your help once again!

Okay, here I am again.
It's a goddam magic, the dark forces of the electricity.
Last message here was 28.06, and after that I had no key handshake timeouts anymore, uptime is since 28.06.

What changed:
1. My wife moved our wireless printer to another floor, so now it's standing ~30cm from CAP;
2. The worker finished plastering one of the rooms in the house, so -1 old Android phones from the connected devices.

I didn't change configuration, upgrade MT firmwares, etc.
What I can assume is the workers' phone did not support WiFi-6, that's basically all I can think about. The conclusion from this assumption is that old device may lead to some failure inside wireless drivers on AX devices.

With this ISP speed get constantly Youtube buffering on my AndroidTV box even on 1080p with wired connection. Wifi randomly goes down and for some moments i cant load nothing at all on my smartphone. HAP AX3. This device is worst one until i using Mikrotik products. Even previous hAP AC3 is working better and stable then this one. Latest 7.11beta2 firmware. Disappointed from how works this device. RoS 6.X was stable for months, RoS 7.X constantly problems with it.

Hi. For information - my ax2 wifi issue was fixed with 7.10.1.
A problem had been introduced with 7.9. I did not try versions after 7.9 before 7.10.1.

So, now with CAPsMAN enabled and everything, on my devices I get 160/120 Mbps, and on PC with wired connection I get 169/128 Mbps. Everything is working for now.

I even get better speeds now when I'm using CAPsMAN... iperf3 avg is about 660 Mbps, max was about 723 Mbps.

I will leave like this for a week or two, then i need to add vlan's into play so i can fully migrate to mikrotik wifi.

That's a venture I am not embarking on yet: the combo wifiwave2-capsman and vlan

It doesn't work yet like it used to work 'in the old days' and you need to do quite some manual intervention on the caps-bridge to get vlan handling working correctly (as far as I understood from last time I toyed with it which was on 7.8 ).
I haven't seen any indications yet that issue is solved / optimized.

..another bummer, on my Dell XPS I have Intel Killer Wireless-n/a/ac 1535 Wireless Network Adapter...
It refuses to connect to 5GHz, whatever I try to do on the laptop adapter by changing the "Wireless mode" it just recognizes 2.4GHz 802.11n 300/300Mbps with WPA3-Personal

I have old TP link at the attic and I can "see" SSID and connect to 5GHz 802.11ac 400/400Mbps with WPA2-Personal

The only time SSID is visible on 5GHz is if I set Wireless Mode on adapter to Device Manger > Network adapters > Killer Wireless.. > Advanced > Wireless Mode > 10-11 a/g/n/ac or another variant with "ac" and then 5GHz is scanned properly and after a few moment's is gone from the list. Connection is not possible during this period.

Logs on MK are blind.... My conclusion is that driver on the adapter requires explicit AES cipher to allow connection :( any ideas?

We have introduced several improvements regarding the AX stability. It is still a work in progress, but in order to gather more feedback as soon as possible, here is a link to the latest alpha version that contains these fixes. The fixes are mainly targeted at the issue discussed in this thread - the inability of WifiWave2 interfaces to authenticate the clients.

Please treat it with caution. If you experience any wireless-related issues with this alpha build, then let us know at support@mikrotik.com
https://box.mikrotik.com/d/e700b4d034174bce8a22/
It is working good so far ... Last 12 hours without restart.

Thanks for sharing alpha.

Where I get updated version of alpha? It is not published any where!

Do you have both wireless interfaces configured with exactly the same security settings?

What I found out is that a few of my wireless clients didn't like if I enabled any of gcmp* encryption types. So now I'm running my Audience (ac device) with these parameters:
/interface wifiwave2 security
add authentication-types=wpa2-psk,wpa3-psk dh-groups=19,20,21 disable-pmkid=yes \
    encryption=ccmp,ccmp-256 ft=yes group-key-update=5m name=mysecprofile wps=disable
and all clients are pretty happy (also those that don't know a squat about WPA3). Those that only know about WPA2 use AES encryption while others mostly use CCMP (I don't know if I ever saw any client to use CCMP-256 and as mentioned, including GCMP did upset some clients).

Is this 7.11beta2 or other build?
I uploaded
routeros-7.11alpha179-arm64.npk
and
wifiwave2-7.11alpha179-arm64.npk
to the root directory of my AX2. And after reboot nothing is changed, except files are disappeared. I'm still on 7.11beta2 (2023-Jun-21 14:39).

Am I doing something wrong?

As 7.11alpha it is considered as downgrade by ROS in your case, so you need to "downgrade". (In package list there is button, but in general check docs to understand how this works)

Please don't take this wrong but that's a wireless adapter from ... 2015/2016 ? Something like that ?
Heck, even my laptop having Intel Wireless-ac 9560 doesn't have a problem with AX
(but it's only wifi5, not 6).

Wouldn't it be easier for your mental health to get a sub-40 EUR TP Link TX20U (USB3) and enjoy AX speeds as they need to be ?
That's what I did (ok, for testing but I admit being a tech-geek  )

I am not taking it wrong, of course not. Laptop itself is about 5y old, that is one of the flagship Dell laptops with Intel i9 CPU etc... but crappy WiFi adapter apparently.
But I am worried because it can connect to 5GHz (thus higher speeds) on my TP LINK EAP330 which is also EOL product and it cannot to the brand new cAP AX.
I also have 2 x TP Link EAP 610 v1 (two years old) which are also WiFi 6 and I am replacing them with 2 x caP AX now. Also with them I had not a single problem of the same kind.
Much older Dell laptop, like 10y old, connects easily on 5GHz on cAP AX without any issues. So it is adapter problem indeed, but... what is the problem?

I don't know if problem is is my phone or what... My wife's phone roams without a problem, my phone on the other hand... I go downstairs and i see that signal is almost gone but it's still connected to the upstairs AP... On 5 GHz band...

Then phone reconnects to downstairs AP, but only after signal drops and phone disconnects...

Maybe i should decrease TX on APs ? Any other suggestions ? I don't think it's a problem with APs...

yes, decreasing TX power on AP can help to tune client roaming behavior, you must verify how much you can lower TX power without harming coverage on intended areas

AP TX power tunning can help to make client prefering 5ghz over 2.4ghz if you need that

I set power to 10, I believe that for cAP ax 24 is max, now i will test for a while... But i find my phone to be very clingy  I put it on top of the upstairs AP and it's still connected to downstairs AP...

sometimes other way to influence roaming behavior on client devices can be AP location

for example you can take advantage of existing objects or elements to reduce or favor your coverage in some directions

the objetive is locate the AP in some way that its obstructed from covering the zone where you want client devices to roam to other AP without harming coverage in the zones you intend to have good coverage

i know can be tricky, reducing TX power helps to make this changes more notorious

My AP placement is not perfect, I didn't account for AP's when house was in remodelling so now one AP is on a shelf (downstairs AP) and another AP is right above downstairs AP on my desk.

I disabled 5 GHz Wi-Fi on Ubiquiti so no interference from 5 GHz but 2.4 I must leave on because my IoT and security is connected to Ubiquiti for now as I don't want to tackle with workarounds with VLAN's and CAPsMAN now...

I'm going trough logs and i can see for eg. that wife phone roams no problem and my roams in the way that i get SA Query timeout and then it reconnects to another interface... but interesting, wifiman for android reports that device roamed between 2 AP

See this post from Guntis again:
viewtopic.php?p=1009820#p1009820

SA Query timeout on itself is not to be considered as an issue (unless it's really FLOODING your logs).
Your wifiman app on Android seems to confirm that.

Don't worry, I don't consider that as an error. What bothers me is that wifiman reports roaming but logs don't... But wife phones roams no problem

We made some progress in regard to fixing this issue.
Updated yesterday, so far so good, no key handshake timeout.
But I already had normal behaviour with 7.11b2.
Did you manage to find a root cause, if I may ask?

Thank you!

Really annoying, I started installing Cap AX at customers, and while it was working from my laptop, may other devices weren't. Customers were furious xD
Finally found this thread, and solved the problem... I hope it will remain stable now...

@MikroTik, please communicate transparently with your customers and professional installers, and DON'T RELEASE NOT WORKING PRODUCTS any more. Hire some testers before releasing a product with failing software on the market.

Yea, here I must agree, it's annoying when it's not working for us.

And most of us are testing for now.

But when you have a paying customer that's a different story... It your ass on the line...

I know lot of people that use Mikrotiks router and switches but for wireless... No, mostly ubiquiti... Similar price range but much much more polished software...

When I compare prices prices for Ubiquiti are 20 to 50% higher than similar MikroTik devices... Maybe I should look for some other distributors, but when I did last year, prices were almost similar...

I bought my two U6-Lite for around 110 euros each about 8 months ago, now they are about 130 - 140 euros. cAP ax is about 140 - 150 euros depending on distributor (all prices include VAT)

The speed of the connection resumes if I turn off the wireless of the devices (smartphones and tablets) and on again.

So far no password errors and very stable wireless connection.

I've not had any issue so far on my cAp-ax fingers crossed.

Also intresting to note that devices in CAPSMANN AP and Router configuration are showing the same missing TX/RX Byte problem.

5500 = DFS channel so subject to radar detection.

Your router is doing what it is supposed to do. It detects radar so it changes frequency.
Avoid that frequency if you're in an area subject to DFS.

Strange thing is that i never had this problem before upgrade, i don't live near airport or any other facility that should have radar installed...

I will search what are non DFS frequencies in my country and set AP to that frequency... But like I said never had this problem before...

Weather radar also uses that range, not only airports or military installations.
Can go from 150km up to 300km.

While you are there, :) put 2G on range 2412-2462 so your printers and other IoTs do not fall into channels 13, 14 and/or 15.... like in my case

I didn't see much changes in change log, only a few changes.

I will return TX power on cAP ax because my phone hangs to AP like crazy... Signal became really low but it hangs onto it...

Also it doesn't like higher channels on 5 GHz radio, i'm thinking about 40 MHz channel and using 5180 and 5220 MHz

Access list can help to kick out devices which keep hanging on, even when signal level is too low to be good.

/interface wifiwave2 access-list
add action=accept allow-signal-out-of-range=30s disabled=no interface=any signal-range=-67..120 ssid-regexp=""
add action=reject allow-signal-out-of-range=1s disabled=no interface=any signal-range=-120..-68 ssid-regexp=""

I have a strange problem.
RB3011 (capsman controller) + cAP ax.
The xiaomi projector does not connect to Wi-Fi. There is an error in the logs: 10:2C:6B:35:F4:A4@AP1-cAP ax-dmt-5GHz disconnected, SA Query timeout, signal strength -47 and disconnected, connection lost, signal strength -51 .
I have tried firmware 7.09,7.10,7,11 beta - does not work
I have tried all the settings that I can, and there is no result.
If you disconnect the point from the capsman and distribute Wi-Fi locally with the same ones, then the projector connects without problems.
The problem is with only one device, the other 20 work without problems.
What to do?

I have the same setup like you, however no xiaomi projector unfortunately...
There seems to be the problem with that, see these posts:
https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/mij ... lem.62538/

I am not in favour of disabling 5GHz but try if you can disable 5GHz on projector if that is possible at all...

hAP ax2:
My problem is that the 5Ghz radio will just stop running. Sometimes it will run for several days, other times it will run for several minutes. It seems very fragile. It doesn't take much for the 5Ghz radio to drop dead. Just changing the country from Canada to US can cause it drop dead.

I had the issue of the 5GHz going offline with versions 7.9, 7.9.1, 7.10, 7.10.1, and now I'm trying 7.11beta4

The 5GHz radio has not disappeared yet, but I'm not able to connect to the 5GHz radio. I'm not sure why I can't connect to the 5GHz radio..I'll experiment a little more.

I really enjoy the hAP ax2 as a little router, but the WIFI capabilities have been very problematic so far.

Check the frequency. Maybe router took 169 channel or above and your client just do not see it.

Check the frequency. Maybe router took 169 channel or above and your client just do not see it.

I think I mislead people with my comment that changing the radio's country settings would cause it to drop dead. That naturally lead people to think it might be a frequency problem. I don't believe it's a frequency problem. By mentioning the country change to the radio settings I was just trying to illustrate how easy it was to make the 5GHz radio go dead. Other changes that are equally simple and have nothing to do with frequencies can cause the 5GHz radio to disappear. For example, adding 2 or 3 SSIDs and connecting them to VLANs can make the 5GHz radio disappear.

Meanwhile, I've been 24 hours on 7.11beta4, and the 5GHz radio has not disappeared. The reason that I could not connect to the 5GHz radio after upgrading to 7.11beta4 was that somehow in the upgrade process the 5GHZ radio interface (wifi1) was dropped as one of the interfaces on the bridge. As soon as I added the wifi1 interface back to the bridge, the interface is working fine.

I am going to attempt some of the actions that would cause the radio to go dead on earlier versions (e.g. adding some SSIDs and connecting them to VLANs). I'll report back how stable the radio is. But so far, it's looking better.

I have 3 ssids on 3 different vlans, both 2.4 and 5ghz.

Apart from 7.9 which was a true challenge, had little problems.

So I tried to play with VLANs on CAPsMAN, my current setup is RB4011 as router and CAPsMAN controller and ax2 as CAP.

ether10 on RB4011 is hybrid port VLAN1 untagged I left that for mgmt. purposes, VLAN10 and 20 tagged going to ax2 ether1 and it works just fine, 5GHz interface is VLAN10, 2.4 GHz is VLAN20.

Hi @gigabyte091, could you please share your /interface wifiwave2 export on both devices?
I was testing CAPsMAN for a similar set-up you have without success, WiFi settings were non applied to CAP.
Thanks!

You are using ax2 as simple cap, nothing more ?

hAP ax2: With a few days of testing, Version 7.11beta4 has provided a much more robust 5GHz radio. The 5GHz radio has not dropped once in scenarios where it would surely have dropped with previous versions. I'm fairly optimistic at this point.

Question: is the standard procedure to upgrade the routerboard firmware to the same version as the RouterOS?

It's recommended, I always upgrade ROS and then routerboard firmware.

AX device as simple AP, that one works.
My problem is with the hybrid situation: AX device acting as AP under capsman ánd VLAN switch on some or all of the ether ports.

I didn't try that, ax2 is a simple AP controlled by capsman, and that part works. I didn't try to play with other ports on it but i will try tomorrow

I tested it right now and yes, i'm unable to get VLAN's working, if I enable vlan filtering on ax2 bridge shit go haywire, client is unable to get IP address...
