hAP AX3 slow SMB transfers with MacOS and Apple TV

Mon Mar 13, 2023 10:12 am

Hi all,

I recently changed my access point from Ubiquiti to hAP AX3, and so far I love everything about it.
My home/office setup is pretty simple. One trunk port comes to eth1, and then I have 2 APs for iot and home devices. The Wifi performance is amazing, and I don't have any problems with uploads and downloads over the Internet( something around 550 Mbps). However, the SMB file transfer speed is SUPER slow. I get around 200-500 KB (1 to 3 Mbps) for uploads or downloads. My old AP SMB speed was around 80 Mbps, and that makes me wonder what I did wrong. I have shared my running-config, and I'm open to suggestions and any advice is greatly appreciated.
I have searched the forum already, and I saw some posts regarding slow SMB speed, but they were mainly because of high CPU utilization, but in my case, with 15 devices connected to the AP and SMB upload, the CPU usage is less than 6%.

Cheers :)

Hi, if the disk is ext4 formatted the smb performance of my hAP ax3 is excellent under windows, I always have speeds of 80MB/s write and 100MB/s read.
Image

The problem in my case is only with macOS Ventura, which is really slow and I don't go over 500 KB/s.
Are your smb clients macOS Ventura?

That is very interesting. I'm on MacOS Ventura, and the disk is EXT4 formatted. I had to format my HDD to EXT4. Otherwise, it was shown as FAT even though it wasn't. I will run a VM and test it with Windows, but let's say it did work fine with Windows, then what should we do? I need SMB to work with Mac and Apple TV.

I'm on MacOS Ventura
I had no doubts considering your low transfer speed
Thinking about it I don't know if it's a bug of ROS or macOS Ventura... maybe both, I haven't found a solution yet and I've opened a ticket (SUP-110463).
I will temporarily try with an smb container...

I used ROS to format the drive and it worked perfectly.

You were right! It is working ok with Windows; what the heck! Lol
I don't think it's a MacOS problem. I've been using Ventura since it was released, and I've never had any issues with SMB until now. Even I tried this with my older TPLINK AP (with USB 2), and it worked fine. With Mikrotik, Apple TV also struggles to load the content from SMB, and 4k videos freeze if I try to skip forward, and this is again a problem that I never had. Please feel free to tag me in your support ticket with Mikrotik.
I think I saw your post somewhere in the forum about using SMB containers. Have you tried it already? were you able to mount the USB?

I don't mind downgrading ROS to V6 if SMB works! But the thing is that I don't know, and no one else commented here if they are using the older ROS version and MacOS without any SMB issues.

You cannot use ROS v6 with hAP ax3 :(

Done! Thanks

I haven't tried with containers yet, I tried only with ROSE package but i couldn't login...

PS. I think it's better to change the title to the discussion specifying that the problem is only with macOS, it works perfectly with linux too (tested with ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS).

The problem is not limited to MacOS. I have the same problem with IPAD OS. Transferring files over SMB is really slow. I hope Mikrotik Address this problem and issue a fix :|

Support recommends using the ROSE package, hope the integrated smb version is also fixed...

Waiting for news, if you decide to use ROSE you must use ROS 7.9rc or later, with the previous ones doesn't work...

Also pay attention to the paths that need to be specified: smb-share needs to match slot name on target device, smb-address is target address.
https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... torage-SMB

For example...
Disable built-in SMB, install ROSE and enable SMB ROSE with
/disk
set usb1-part1 smb-export=yes
On macOS you must use:
smb://routerIPaddress/usb1-part1
If you use
smb://routerIPaddress/
it does not work

SMB containers work very well. ROSE with NFS also works well. I haven't tried ROSE SMB yet on macOS since they improved it (7.9/7.10) but look forward to doing so.

It is also unusable with RouterOS 7.11rc2 and macOS Sonoma :(

I'm using temporarily Owlfiles which strangely works great with smb and RouterOS.

Why does nobody care about this bug? :(

I don't regular use it, but ROSE SMB to Mac seems to work. Just did quick test it on RB1100AHx4 with 2xSSD RAID-1 over 1G LAN (and Wi-Fi) from Terminal on Mac to transfer 1GB file over ROSE SMB... Mac is Intel with Ventura 13.5.

ROSE SMB copies at a rate of ~14MB/s (or 112Mb/s) – didn't matter Wi-Fi or Ethernet, both were same.

truncate -s 1G 1g.txt
time cp 1g.txt /Volumes/raid1-part1/1g.txt

cp 1g.txt /Volumes/raid1-part1/1g.txt 0.00s user 1.36s system 1% cpu 1:09.90 total

I'm not sure guest works, so assuming you did something like this is what I did to enable it:
/disk set [find slot=raid1-part1] smb-export=yes smb-user=amm0 smb-password=example

Then in Finder on Mac, use ⌘K (or in menu Go > Connect to Server...) to provide the connection string:
smb://amm0@192.168.88.1/raid1-part1

OK you are right but who can't use ROSE?

And the users? How do I manage users, folders and permissions with ROSE?

I use ROSE for containers and between RouterOS devices. Occasionally I have connected to the container volume using SMB – why I know it works.

I didn't make it ;). I think ROSE is more to remotely mount storage devices (and add RAID) – than be a true NAS solution with ACLs/folders/etc for desktop clients. So AFAIK it's one SMB user per partition with smb-export=yes.

Now why the older SAMBA-style SMB in /ip/smb version is slower IDK.

Same problem also with macOS Sonoma 14.0 and 7.12beta9, SMB integrated into RouterOS (IP -> SMB) cannot be used with macOS, too slow and crashes.

ROSE is not compatible with hAP ac2 and other devices.
It doesn't matter, I won't bother you anymore 👋

PS. I don't want to use the router as a NAS, I only need it to share with macOS devices small scripts (two) via SMB.

when it is expected the documentation of smb rose storage to be completed? https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... torage-SMB in my case I can't plan to move to ROSE-storage until full smb documentation is published.

It should work on hAPac2, or does it not fit on the flash?

There is not enough space...

File transfer crashes with macOS, it's not just slow, it's unusable and apparently no one cares because now there is ROSE.

It seems that fixing the built-in SMB is too expensive for MikroTik.
If you can install ROSE you are lucky, otherwise you have to buy another device.

However I think that the title of the discussion should be changed since it is not only about to the hAP ax3 model.

Thank you @massinia!

You contributed so much to this post. It's sad that after all this time, we still don't have a solution to this. Even very cheap routers from TP-Link and Netgear have that function working out of the box.
What do you suggest for the new topic name? I will rename it.

I tried SMB with ROSE today and while I was able to mount the share on macOS 14.1.1, it did not work properly.

While transferring a 6.5GB file from macOS to RouterOS, I got an error after about 1GB. Surprisingly the /disk/monitor-traffic still reported writes at disk speed, although no data was being transferred as per Wireshark on macOS. /tool/profile reported 40% of unclassified CPU.

Slow speed transfer with built-in SMB and macOS/Apple TV
I tried SMB with ROSE today and while I was able to mount the share on macOS 14.1.1, it did not work properly.
Does it work correctly with smaller files?

In all (4) hAP ac2 I have installed this container https://hub.docker.com/r/filebrowser/filebrowser
After reading Normis' last answer I gave up, MikroTik doesn't care about this problem and filebrowser was the only solution for me.

Issue is not device related, it's ROS SAMBA service issue and it's problem when you own device on which you cannot install ROSE storage package because of small flash size. I think MT should consider maintaining SAMBA on ROS and not forcing ROSE storage usage for it or remove obsolete service from ROS to free some space on flash, optional package also can be an option for those who doesn't have issue (for non Apple devices).

Is ROSE intended to be a full replacement of IP/SMB?

I'm trying to use it but...
[____@____] /disk> set usb1 smb-export=yes
failure: could not unmount filesystem - probably somebody still uses it
yes, disk is in use and should continue to be accessible by ROS for user manager, dude, logs, containers...

I want to share (some folder of) the disk by SMB over the network, not make the usb disk usable only from the network.

Yes, in 7.14 the default SMB is replaced with the fast / modern implementation that previously was only in ROSE package. Now the performance will be better

Hey Guys, I was reading the previous comments and decided to upgrade to 7.14rc2. Unfortunately, after the upgrade, SMB is not working for me anymore.
I tried to connect via MacOS and Windows, but it just won't connect.
I wanted to do what was mentioned in this post earlier and configure the SMB with smb-export=yes, but only these commands are available on my end:
smb-address smb-encryption smb-password smb-share smb-sharing smb-user

This is how SMB is configured:
/ip smb users
set [ find default=yes ] name=user2 read-only=yes
add name=user
/ip smb
set comment=fileserver domain=local enabled=yes
/ip smb shares
set [ find default=yes ] directory=/pub valid-users=user2
add directory=usb1-part1 invalid-users=user name=share valid-users=user2

Do you guys know what am I missing now?

I downgraded to 7.13.5 because I needed to work with my SMB server.
The first thing I noticed was that all my previous SMB settings, such as users, shares, etc they were all deleted.
I added them again, but I cannot connect to SMB anymore.
I checked the disk settings, and when I clicked on OK it showed me this error: "Invalid value in Partition Size" :|
The disk was initially wiped and formatted with hAP AX3.
I'm so confused right now. I couldn't find any documentation regarding that error.

Once again, 7.13 = old SMB, slow. Use 7.14 with new SMB, which is fast and has issues fixed.

This is what happens if you downgrade, yes, it is possible that configuration conflicts will happen. Don't downgrade, or if you do, reinstall and reset.

Why do you have a domain "lan" specified?
Also try using Winbox or Terminal and post the "ip smb export" output. Webfig could have a bug that is yet unknown

I use that suffix in my entire home network. It was always there in the past, but I just removed it.

Is the domain actually "lan" in your computers in your network? Normally it is WORKGROUP and then you should have the same in the SMB settings

It's just an old habit to set the "search domain" to that name. I even changed it to "WORKGROUP," and it still doesn't work.
And from Mac, I always connect like this: smb://ipaddress

Ok, I figured out what was wrong. My AX3 has two management interfaces. Like I can open the web interce on both IP addresses. For some reason, I can not connect to the interface that I used to connect via SMB. HTTP still works, though.
*******At this point, SMB works great, and yes, it is much faster than how it used to be. Normis, I really appreciate your help and your prompt responses.
Is there a way to check why that interface is not allowing SMB anymore?

Much Appreciate it. I'm going to play with this a bit more. I upgraded and downgraded the routerOS a few times yesterday, and some settings are gone.
