hAP ax2 woes

Mon Nov 20, 2023 9:25 pm

I've been having trouble with my hAP ax2 over the past few weeks. done a re-install of 7.12 via netinstall to see if that might help to no avail.
Problem is with the hAP ax2 wifi1 5G, every few minutes my laptop just disconnects then re-connects for no reason. This only happens on the hAP ax2 which is running capsman and 1 cap ax. when I connect My laptop to the cAP ax it stays connected for days on end with no drops at all. I've tried all sorts of settings power/channel/security atm I have it isollated away from the main SSID's I use because it just causes choas with clients full stop.
Having a look through the supot.rif all I see is this, anything to worry about ?
== SECTION routerboard
       routerboard: yes
        board-name: hAP ax^2
             model: C52iG-5HaxD2HaxD
     serial-number:
     firmware-type: ipq6000
  factory-firmware: 7.5
  current-firmware: 7.13beta2
  upgrade-firmware: 7.13beta2

BIOS
bad command name bios (line 1 column 21)
HEALTH
bad command name health (line 1 column 21)
At this point it's either spend more money on an RB5009 and some other ax device to use as an AP or dump the lot, It's driving me mad. just to add insult my warranty is up!

I'll try it tomorrow, but for now I've just tried 40 wide and it's not disconnecting how strange.

Nothing is wrong with using 40 MHz channel width. I'm using 40MHz on my 5GHz radios as all my wireless devices doesn't access my NAS or any other service on LAN that requires high speed and my internet connection is 150/150 so 573Mbps is plenty for my use case.

No maybe not, but it should be able to do 80 the same as the cap ax can.
Anyway erm it started doing the same ole trick last night after a few hours so I'll netinstall it again and try it on it's own to see if it does the same.

Better keep calm and check your config, yet another time. AX2s are great little devices and i have a working capsman setup running wave2 with roaming and all the flowers. takes some configuration though.

FT enabled causes half my old stuff ie apple devices not to connect. Wrong password is what it says I believe, even worse it's now enabled with the default config option via netinstall on the ax2 at least. So for starters I can't use the function.
Glad yours is all working as expected!

At home I have capsman setup with RB5009, 1 AX2 and 1 AX3.
I have a couple of AX2 standalone with a customer (running just nicely) and I also have capsman setup with RB5009, 11 cAP AX, 3 AX3 and 1 AX Lite.
Also running as smooth as butter.

Not sure why all the sarcasm feel free if it's that important, it's just a basic config. No point in posting the cap as it's as is in CAP mode nothing to see!

Definitely not default config.

Focusing on the wifi part since that's the part giving you the most trouble.

Where does this block come from ?
Manual setting ?
add channel.band=5ghz-ax .frequency=5500-5560 .skip-dfs-channels=10min-cac \
    .width=20/40/80mhz configuration.country="United Kingdom" .mode=ap .ssid=\
    01 disabled=no name=cap-wifi1 radio-mac=48: \
    security.authentication-types=wpa2-psk .encryption=ccmp
add channel.band=2ghz-ax .frequency=2402-2422 .skip-dfs-channels=10min-cac \
    .width=20mhz configuration.country="United Kingdom" .mode=ap .ssid=\
    01 .tx-power=10 disabled=no name=cap-wifi2 radio-mac=\
    48: security.authentication-types=wpa2-psk .encryption=ccmp
I am not seeing this on my RB5009 acting as controller.

The part after this code block, is your manual setting of the local radio, correct ? That should be ok.
But that first part makes me wonder where it comes from.

Also, the whole point of capsman is to use the same SSID across APs. I don't see that on 5GHz ? You got 01 and TEST

Yes thats manual settings of the cap and hap your seeing, when capsman is turned on in the hAP ax2 it presents itself as...
cap-wifi,cap-wifi2
add is the CAP
wifi1,wifi2
set is the HAP
And I was using the same ssid apart from last night while testing, hope that clears things up.
I just follwed Toms video which is great of course.

Ease of use, less complicated and all the bridging is done for you via the cap in cap mode.
I don't need to add loads of caps, just the one so no point in making a central config for security etc.
Edit: Looking from a home user stand point.

Just checking we are on the same page here, those settings are set in the hAP not the cap!

Yes, that's what I am referring to.

CAP you set in caps mode and done. Nothing else to be done there (assuming it's AX device and everything is running wave2 drivers).

Capsman, there you set the configs for the cap to be applied.
If you use a device having own wireless interfaces as capsman, you need to set those wireless interfaces locally.
But you do not, never, set the caps interfaces on the capsman controller. It will do so on its own through provisioning. That's what capsman is for.

However, mentioning that, I don't even see a provisioning part in your capsman controller.
Then how do you expect those interfaces to get their config ?

Great Youtube video ? I beg to differ ...
Help pages from Mikrotik, rudimentary as they may be for some, do work.

Summarizing how I do it:
- create the configs you want to use for local and caps.
Since it's 2 GHz and 5GHz, I guess you will need 4 sets (2GHz with 2 different frequencies, 5GHz with 2 different frequencies).
- set local interfaces local on AX2 using 2 sets of prior made config (and for 95% or so it WILL be the same as the caps config, that's how it works)
- PROVISION the remaining 2 configs to your caps device (1 for 2GHz, 1 for 5GHz).
Done.

For me it was very helpful, I can't see why it wouldn't be at a basic level that is anyway.

Watched the video, it's the one from Mikrotik ?
I stand corrected then.

But...
There is a section there which mentions provisioning.
You missed that part ?
Even for 1 cap you need to do that.

In your case, I advise using dynamic enabled

What he said is... BUT setting it up manually gives you a better understanding, at which point I glazed over!
This needs clarifying with Microtik if this further step does or doesn't need doing.

I must agree with @holvoetn, there is no need to mess with CAP settings. Whole point of CAPsMAN is that everything is managed in one place.

This isn't about my cap, that works perfect, you asked me to try my hAP ax2 on it's own to see if I was having the same disconnections on my hAP ax2 when using it by itself with a DEFAULT not Basic config. I did just that and came back and said it does the same thing when being used as stand alone. So I came to the conclusion that my hAP ax2 the problem as for some reason it keeps dropping the connection. My cap ax doesn't do that it stays connected period.

Ok, then we change focus...
I see you use frequency ranges. What if you set a specific frequency ?

Configured an AX2 with your settings for local 5GHz on wifi1.
Laptop connected to it using wifi5-card.
It shows 802.11ac (in one of your last screenshots I saw 802.11n being mentioned ??)
No issues. No disconnects (with connection to Azure Remote Desktop I would know immediately if it disconnects, even for a split second).

What device have you connecting to that AP ?

Why ranges ?
Every time the AP changes frequency (because you allow it), you will loose connection.
I always set my frequencies fixed (after planning and scanning of the environment, either manually, either through provisioning)

Can you enable wireless debugging, it will show you more info on what's happening.

going out for a bit, will stop this current test when i get back.

This is what I am running now just to test the radio on a random frequency on it's own SSID
interface/wifi/monitor 0,1,2,3
                 state: running running running running
               channel: 5560/ax/eeeC 2412/ax 5660/ax/Ceee 2467/ax
      registered-peers: 1 2 1 0
      authorized-peers: 1 2 1 0
              tx-power: 22 10 25 15
    available-channels: 5500/ax/Ceee 2412/ax 5660/ax/Ceee 2462/ax
                        5520/ax/eCee 2417/ax 5660/ac/Ceee 2467/ax
                        5540/ax/eeCe 2422/ax 5660/ax/Ce 2472/ax
                        5560/ax/eeeC 5660/ac/Ce
                                             5660/n/Ce
                                             5660/ax
                                             5660/ac
                                             5660/n
                                             5660/a

When I get back I will start the test again with with everything on the same SSID with this configuration.
hap
5180-5240 80 wide AX
2402-2422 20 wide AX

cap
5500-5560 80 wide AX

Ranges because I was trying to stop Radar bouncing to the end of the spectrum

Frequencies, you mean like this ?

And this problen never presents itself when I'm connected to the cap ax.

In my case, with a caspman hAP ax3 and a cap hAP ac2, there are no problems, you move around the house and roaming works perfectly, all with version 7.13b2

Ok it would seem the problem is resolved via your suggestion so thankyou for that.
Why the problem still presented itself after I netinstalled the router and used the out of the box settings I can't explain other than out of frustration I chucked the router behind the telly where it still remains.

Better keep calm and check your config, yet another time. AX2s are great little devices and i have a working capsman setup running wave2 with roaming and all the flowers. takes some configuration though.
I hope I've understood it a little better now, cAP ax with hAP ax2.

Re: hAP ax2 woes

Not sure if this is a bug or not but here goes. Using a cap ax and ax2 as Controller, if I setup the radios from the Wireless Tables wifi tab and double-click each radio and enter details per radio including security then goto "/interface/wifi/actual-configuration/print" I only see three of the radios with
.passphrase="password" of the four radios. if i then try to add the password to the missing one (note the password already shows**** in the field) then the missing password shown via "/interface/wifi/actual-configuration/print" will bounce to another radio if that makes sense. However if I add the same security details via the security tab in wireless tables ie sec1, and then add the security details per radio using sec1 the password isn't missing for any Radios when I issue the command "/interface/wifi/actual-configuration/print". Maybe a bug or maybe just a useless observation.
All via Winbox by the way.

I can't make this work and play nice, well say i can't I can but thats only 3 radios is the following configuration.
If anybody has a working 80+80 5G and 20+20 2.4g working config for cAP ax & hAP ax2 as Router and Controller please feel free to share.
This is the only way it works for me.....
interface/wifi/monitor 0,1,2,3
                 state: running running disabled running
               channel: 5500/ax/Ceee 2412/ax 2462/ax
      registered-peers: 3 1 3
      authorized-peers: 3 1 3
              tx-power: 22 10 15
    available-channels: 5500/ax/Ceee 2412/ax 2462/ax
Enabling the 5G radio on the hAP ax2 causes the whole thing to run like crap!
Currently I'm replacing the 5G Radio with an old Archer C7 Openwrt flavour which makes me sad.

Just a word of caution: 80+80 is not the same as 160. And if I'm not much mistaken, ax2 doesn't support any of these variants.

Correct.
That chipset, also used in AX3 and cAP AX, is unable to go to 160MHz channel width (or any underlying combinations).

Why the settings you see in Winbox/webfig do show it then, that's another topic.

In previous versions Winbox showed possibility for 20/40/80/160 as channel width on AX2 and AX3.
Seems it's not the case anymore from what I can see on some of my devices so that's a good thing, no confusion anymore.

My hAP ax2 came loaded with 7.5 but I upgraded to 7.6 straight away before looking around it much when I first got it mid October 2022.
Does the controller need to be arm64, ie can I use a CHR hyper-V to try controlling the radios instead of the hap ax2 ?

7.12.1 or older, no problem to add wifiwave2 package to CHR and use that one as capsman controller.
7.13 beta, capsman should be included already in base bundle. The whole wifiwave2 menu tree is from here labeled wifi.

Thanks I've got it spun up now and can see wifi/capsman, I'll try this all tomorrow to see if that helps!

Why will you use separate controller ?

I might not need to, trying Alpha240 with all the stuff turned on ie wpa2/wpa3/FT etc and it works.
The way I took toms video to mean that I could use security per radio as long as everthing (security and SSID) was the same may not be quite right,
Because the only thing I've changed is the way I now do my security via sec1 and second installed 7.13alpha240.
THIS...
/interface wifi security
add authentication-types=wpa2-psk,wpa3-psk disabled=no encryption=ccmp ft=yes \
ft-over-ds=yes name=sec1

Re: hAP ax2 woes  [SOLVED]

Fri Dec 01, 2023 9:51 pm

I can now put this to bed thankfully with the release of 7.13RC2 and seperating out 1x5g radio for my older ipad Air2 set wpa2/ccmp 80 wide AC SSID 02 FT dissabled because it refuses to connect if enabled where every other old phone or printer work with FT enabled, go figure. And the other three radios are set with SSID 01 FT enabled wpa2/wpa3/ccmp using the security tab sec1 and adding that to the radio security drop down for each radio.

That means the log gets spammed a bit by the older gear, and the newer gadgets behave now with FT enabled, this may also be partly due to 7.13RC2.
So great work all and thankyou.
