Brand new ATL LTE-18 bricked... :(

Wed Sep 27, 2023 1:31 am

Hello everybody,
Tonight I unpacked my brand new ATL LTE-18, for the First Time I build my LAN cable to connect the router with my PC, It worked like a charm!

So, I have done the Quick configuration, I check the firmware update... oh, I have to download the latest firmware. Download started, finished, rebooting router then.... BLACKOUT!
...
...
when the Energy comes back, the router start to reboot.... then again... and again... and again...

After 30 Years of firmware upgrading, BIOS flashing and other stuff like that, I bricked my First device...
Anyway I'm too newbie to handle RouterOS and NetInstall and I can't unbrick my Mikrotik because I can't longer access to It.

Can I do something to bring back to its short Life my Mikrotik?

Thanks in advance

Netinstall is the only way.

Personal comment to something mentioned in that thread: I have FAR more success using Linux vs Windows.

Small piece of advice, always have some kind of UPS power in case you are flashing/upgrading firmware. I learned that a hard way...

All my networking equipment, NAS and PC are on UPS power supply.

I have already installed NetInstall, I tried to set the ATL IN PRBM mode but I can't succeed. How do I know I entered in PRBM Mode?

Press reset and keep it pressed until you see it appearing in netinstall window.
Sometimes it can help to press reset already before power on, then backup bootloader will be used.

When in doubt:
Use wireshark on your computer.
When you see bootp requests coming, you know your device is in netinstall mode.

Recently HAP AC bricked while updating (SFP overheated) and wouldn't boot.
Holding reset button while booting fixed it.
Netinstall is not the only way.

Finally, after a whole night of trials, reset button pressed and waitings, I unbricked the ATL with NetInstall.
Thanks you all for your support!

This is good news. For the future, aside from the excellent backup power advice already given, you absolutely DO NOT "have to download the latest firmware" unless you have issues or need to patch a serious vulnerability. Let others be the beta testers for a few months...

@hackfraud has a point...
Recently HAP AC bricked while updating (SFP overheated) and wouldn't boot.
Holding reset button while booting fixed it.
It's always worth trying a reset to default (which means holding reset for 8-10 seconds WHILE powering the unit). If that doesn't work, then netinstall is the only answer...
