Plan to port BTH to CHR?

Sat Mar 23, 2024 12:09 pm

Hi all,
Is there any plan to port the BTH service to CHR routeros?
Did you ear something about that?
I've juste replace a RB5009 by a minipc under Proxmox/CHR and it's the only thing that I couldn't configure...
Thanx.

What's wrong with simply configuring wireguard directly ?
It's the basis of BTH ...just a little bit more bells and whistles.

True. Unless OP needed the proxy features for restricted NAT from BTH...

That's the main benefit of BTH... and as it's already emplemented on other platform, I was wondering if
it is planed on CHR. That's all...

I suspect part of the problem is the small ARMs have a finite capacity – the CPU is need for WG encryption so it act like a "governor" to throttle usage. But bring up CHR on large AWS/etc instance could theoretically exceeded the bandwidth at the "far end" of BTH. Likely not your case, but that be generic issue with CHR + BTH.

Also, CHR+BTH is bit trickier since there is default config/firewall on CHR for BTH to know what to modify. With the default conf on ARM/etc., there is notion of LAN (bridge) and WAN (ether1)... same isn't true on CHR.

Still it a good request. Since beyond just the proxy feature of BTH... BTH also has the "friendly" apps to set it a VPN. That's another benefit to BTH over "plain" WG, which requires more manual cut-and-pasting of keys.

That's exactly what is expected for beginners...
Of course, I managed to config a wireguard tunnel over my Proxmox/CHR for my own needs, but I don't understand why BTH as disappeared
from that platform.

It does seem Proxmox is getting more common in the "advanced home networks" ... so I'd agree CHR support for BTH make sense.

They do say BTH is only support on TILE/ARM/ARM64. And stuff like ZeroTier is also not available in CHR. Why a more powerful platform have these restrictions? IDK since Mikrotik has never explained the "why" part.

Best you can do is file a feature request at help.mikrotik.com.
