Mikrotik LHGG LTE18 frequently unresponsive

Thu Mar 21, 2024 4:20 am

Hi, I am using a Mikrotik LHGG LTE18 modem and the experience was good for a few months (although it needed to be hard reset a few times). Recently the modem becomes unresponsive, ranging from every few minutes to hours- the internet goes down, and the modem is unreachable at 192.168.188.1 for a few minutes. When I check the log in WebFig I cant see any reboots or any errors logged. Has anyone else encountered such an issue? Can someone please guide me how to troubleshoot this problem - what kind of logs I can look at- to see if it's being overloaded, or maybe temperatures to see if it's overheating. Thanks.

Firmware version: EG18EAPAR01A13M4G_01.002.01.002
RouterOS version: 7.14.1

When you say the "modem" isn't available at 192.168.188.1, do you mean when you are logged into RouterOS, the modem isn't in the interface, or are you saying you can't ping that IP nor log into the router?

Ah I mean I can't log into the router or ping it. So it's either down or overloaded.

The default IP is 192.168.88.1. You changed it to 192.168.188.1?

Likely not. I believe 192.168.188.1 is the default IP on the LHGG (and some other LTE things I think).

You may want to check the LTE firmware is update-to-date. It's an option on the LTE interface to check for upgrades.

There should be some log if software issue or it rebooted. Are you running it in passthrough mode? Because it's kinda odd you're losing management access even if the LTE modem was having issues.

Yes, all LHG have 192.168.188.1 as default.

By default, logs are saved in memory. So after reboot they are empty. Change /system/logging to save to the flash drive.

I have the same LHGG LTE18, and since the 7.14.1 update mine has started to become unresponsive when trying to access it via a browser at 192.168.188.1 . Using Winbox, however, does work. Strangely, it lost the LTE interface and provided errors throughout the night!

Hmm. The fact only winbox works is strange here. Since that shouldn't have anything to do with LTE not working right.

Did you also upgrade the boot firmware in /system/routerboard/upgrade - so that matches the same version.

Other thing to check is if your "Use Network APN" is checked the APN profile ("LTE APNs" on the LTE Interface tab in winbox). If it's check, you might try unchecking and googling for your carrier name and "APN" to find the APN settings. But this is more a guess.

If it persists... & routeros, LTE firmware, and boot firmware are all at "stable"... you might want to file a ticket at help.mikrotik.com and include a supout.rif generated from your router with the report.

no it's not in the logs and it's not in passthrough mode. so maybe it's not rebooting, just stuck cuz of overheating throttling or something, it gets pretty hot here.
the unit is stabler now so I'll leave it for now - what I did was change the APN from the default "internet", then targeting a base station that did not support CA but had better SINR (previously it tended to connect to a base station with full support for CA, but had worse SINR and speeds)

I also have issues with mine.

After power loss it would just sit there doing nothing. Can't access it in any way (IP/MAC doesn't show up in winbox), even when directly connected trough a POE injector. The only thing that helps is netinstall and then it works for some time, until the next power lost.
I've tried powering it from it's own injector/power supply, from RB4011 eth10 POE and from a Ruckus ICX switch POE. Exactly same issues in each situation. Installed a new CAT6 cable, it's the same...
