RB260GS - Cannot reset to factory defaults

Thu Nov 14, 2024 10:10 am

Hi there,

I do not seem to be able to reset the device to factory defaults. I managed to lock myself out of the device but I cannot login with the default credentials (admin with no password).

I don't think the reset procedure works for me (paper clip on Reset button while powering the device).

I can see the device in WinBox, I can access it via Web but I cannot login :-(

How do I reset this thing for good?

Thanks,

D.

You don't happen to have a device which already has a default factory passwd ?
Check for sticker.
Open your web browser, the default IP management address is 192.168.88.1, with username: admin and no password (or, for some models, check user and wireless passwords on the sticker)

There is no password on the sticker for that model :-(

Have you tried with a different browser (or at least tried in-private)?

Yes, same results. Browser does not matter here I guess.

The device does not reset properly. I cannot see the ACT led blink, it just does not do anything while I try to reset it.

From the documentation:
Hold this button during boot time and release after LED light stops flashing to reset SwOS configuration and load primary backup firmware.
Access to primary firmware allows the reinstallation of the main firmware.
Did you perform the reset like this?

Netinstall is RouterOS only.

This is not clear at all from my perspective. Which LED are we talking about? ACT? SFP? In my case, the ACT led never blinks when I press the reset button with pin while powering up the device.

Yes and no
No netinstall, but BOOTP/TFTP should work, see:
viewtopic.php?t=145981

The info is now here:
https://wiki.mikrotik.com/SwOS/RB250_RB ... S_firmware

In any case the ACT led needs to be blinking, so that is the problem
It is not uncommon that the "reset" button is defective/has broken solder joints, so I would check that first thing, see (as an example):

Re: RB260GS - Cannot reset to factory defaults  [SOLVED]

I'm a muppet... I was actually accessing another device with the same IP (RouterOS and not SwitchOS).

Right, I will get more coffee right away...
