Which 8 port fanless switch?

Sun Oct 06, 2024 8:11 pm

Hi, I need to get a small (limited space), fanless (placed in a living room) 8 port switch. It will replace a budget managed swich from another manufacturer. I have some problems with that one (I guess), as other hw I use is Mikrotik and nothing strange is in the logs.

I don't do anything fancy on the switch right now, just some IGMP snooping. I will play with some VLANs in the future.

I know something from the CRS3xx would be perfect for me, but I'm worried about space and loudness of the device. Any thoughts? Seems there are limited options right now, the CRS112 or CSS610. The first it seems a little old, the second I'm sceptic coz the SwitchOS Lite.

Why not look at L009 ?
Can also be used as switch and has passive cooling.

Make sure to checkout the test results for performance figures.

I have CRS310 that replaced my CSS610 below my TV and fans are inaudible. (CSS was replaced because I wanted that all of my devices run ROS)

Nice 8 port 2.5gig switch with two sfp+ ports :D

Also... I have CRS112 PoE version and no problems at all.

Also you can look at L009 and use it as a switch as @holvoetn suggested

I pulled the trigger on the CRS310. Not fanless, let's see if it's gonna be a problem.

I have all 8 ether ports full, with 1Gig links and one sfp+ to rj45 converter (1 gig, not 10) for trunk and fan is on minimum.

I've ordered 2 units of CRS310 8G 2S. I also replaced by SFP+ BaseT adapter for SFP+ SR, heat is reduced in theses switches and for RB5009.

And yes, the integrated fan isn't quiet. I've replaced theses by noctua NF-A4x20 PWM for less tha 15€/fan.
Fater that, noise is really reduced for few euros.

No, the fan isn't quiet... I will replace it sooner or later. However, as soon as I got the switch I opened it. One of the heatsinks was misplaced in mine too. It seems to be a common problem :/

At this point, why not one CRS326-24G-2S+IN ?

No cooler - truly silent
Two SFP+ ports
24 gigabit ports

And this isn't the rack version. It's quite smaller, at 285 x 144 x 44 mm

Costs more than the L009, yes. But it runs RoS, has two SFP+ cages, and with 24 gigabit ports... well, I don't think one would have to think about capacity so soon.

CRS310 is great option, I bought it recently and I'm happy of it. However fan requires replacement for Noctua, if you need constant silence.
Otherwise, you will hear starting jet only on switch but, either heavy load. I haven't loaded it so much never, but over the night in living room, you might hear this specific small turbine fan sound. With Noctua, no issues.
