Perimeter Network Design - Assistance

Thu Jan 16, 2025 2:20 pm

Good day,

I'm reaching out to seek your expertise and assistance with a wireless multipoint network design for one of my clients. Our company primarily supplies equipment to our clients, and we are not network specialists. My client has requested that I design and supply the necessary equipment for this project as they also do not have experience with network design, same as us. We would appreciate if you as specialists can help with this design.

Here are some important notes to consider:
1.) There are no power available at the network AP points, so each access point (AP) and camera will need to be powered via battery and solar power. We need to ensure that the equipment we choose is not excessively demanding in terms of power consumption.
2.) The client will supply the battery and solar equipment, so this is not required in the design. The client will be using 24V Lithium batteries at each AP / Camera location point.
3.) The client will be using Hikvision Thermal & Optical Bi-spectrum Network Cameras that will require POE to function (model: DS-2TD2628-10/QA)
4.) The client requires a network that is durable, reliable, responsive, and not slow.
5.) We need reliable network equipment that is of good quality but not prohibitively expensive. We are looking for something that is not "commercial" grade in terms of cost.

I need a complete list of network equipment required, taking into consideration only battery / solar power.
• What AP’s / CPE is required at each point starting at the “Router”
• POE Switches
• Whatever other hardware network equipment is required, excluding cabling

The client does have the following existing equipment that can be used, if we can Incorporate it into the design but if it will affect the design, then we do not have use of it:
1. 1 x MikroTik OmniTikG-5HacD - 5GHz Outdoor AP with 360 Degree Omni-Antenna
2. 1 x Mikrotik DynaDishG-5Hac
3. 1 x Mikrotik MikroTik LHG XL 5 ac

I wanted to bring to your attention an important aspect of the network design project. Please note that there is only one clear line of sight to the perimeter as indicated on the design. The rest of the area is quite obstructed by trees, or the slope at the bottom of the property is significantly below the clear line of sight.

To give you a better understanding of the challenge we are facing, I have included a copy of Google Earth imagery that depicts the area in question and the design layout showing distances between each AP point.

Do you really need PoE aka. 802.3af ?

Personally, I never had the change to Work with the Hikvision Thermal & Optical Bi-spectrum Network Cameras (model: DS-2TD2628-10/QA)
But if the Datasheets i found on the Internet are correct, the Camera also allows to be powered with
24 VAC ± 25%: 0.8 A, Max.8.5 W
12 VDC ± 25%: 0.7 A, Max.8.5 W

If you only have access to Solar and 24V Lithium batteries, if may be easier (and cheaper) to power the Devices (AP and Camera) with 24V DC directly.

Will the 60Ghz work with the "back to Back" or will I have issues creating this setup with so many "Back to back"
>>> MikroTik Wireless Wire Cube Pro 60GHz/5GHz Outdoor Kit | CubeG-5ac60aypair

We might get away with integrating the sector, to try and reduce the "Back to Back"
>>> MikroTik CubeSA 60Pro ac 60GHz 60° Integrated Sector | CubeG-5ac60ay-SA

Lastly can you create a Point to Point with the CubeSA 60Pro ac?

If this installation is for a business, I’d recommend opting for a wired setup with PoE and avoiding Hikvision for obvious reasons.

I concur with @Larsa comment, that a Wired Solution should at least be considered....
Nowadays you can find businesses that can quickly and economically lay Power and/or Network cables
with the help a specialised Cable Trenching Maschines.

In your specific Stituation, a "Wired" Solution would not only be durable, reliable, responsive, and not slow.
but it also gives you simplicity...

And I can say from experience, that is really worth something.

Nevertheless, If that isn`t possible and only a Wireless-Connection can be considered
I would recommend you to build a Network with as little "dependencies" as possible...
In other Word, each location should have a PtP/PtMP connection directly with the MAIN-Network, aka. Haus
and you should avoid Daisy-Chaining the Network...

So for Exemple, using the Google-Earth Image as reference
Camera "C1" should have a Wireless-Link (PtP/PtMP) directly to the Haus
as should Camera "C2", "C3", "C4", etc....

and would NOT recomment connecting "C2" via PtP with "C1" and "C1" via PtP with "Main", etc...

Hope this helps
