Chateau pro ax out-of-the-box connection problems

Wed Jan 22, 2025 11:45 pm

Hello, friends!
I am new to the world of Mikrotik. I bought a Chateau pro ax, plugged it in and immediately upgraded to 7.17. I made a few settings, everything worked ok, but the next day I found that my SSID was not in the list of available SSIDs. I rebooted it, it helped for a while, but not for long.
I decided that I had configured something wrong, so I reset the configuration using the Reset button. After the reset, the configuration was reset to default, but the version was still 7.17. I decided to observe without making any settings - I only specified my country and time zone. It seems that the problem is still there - after about 80-90 minutes the ssid disappears. I connected via cable at this time and tried to log in via winbox. Login happens, but logs out after a few seconds. If I manage to open any window during this time, it turns out to be completely empty and white. Only rebooting helps, for a while. CPU ~0%, free RAM ~ 670 Mb.
So far I have temporarily configured watchdog to 8.8.8.8, it works and helps, but frequent reboots are not what I expected from such a smart device.
Can you please help me, what to do? Perhaps I got a damaged device?

Do you see errors in the log?

Some additional info here. There were no problems for a day, but in the evening I lost a wifi connection again. And there was no reboot. I tried to connect via cable, but I can't log in via Winbox. The behavior was the same as before: connected, empty window, and immediately disconnected.
I unplugged the WAN cable, and only then did a watchdog fire and reboot a router. It works now. But as before, there are no error logs except for a reboot on watchdog.
I would appreciate any recommendations. I'm very disappointed with my router :(

p.s. don't know if this is important. I noticed that when the problem appears, instead of two wan LEDs (green and amber), only one (amber) is on. Even today when the watchdog didn't work. It looks like the wan connection has switched from 1Gbit/s mode to another mode or stopped working altogether. But in this case, disconnecting the wan would not trigger a reboot.

p.p.s. How do you think, should I revert OS and firmware to OOTB version 7.16.1 if possible? It's confusing that I haven't found any mention of such problem from other users on this forum. Therefore, I think the problem is not with the update. It doesn't look like there are many Chateau Pro ax users here though

Hello to everyone looking in this thread. I've made up my mind. It seems that Mikrotik is not for me. I have no luck with it. Every 4-5 years I buy one of the top-end devices, and unfortunately I get problems all the time. Even with the stock settings, it doesn't work as expected :( :( :(
I'll add a little bit here for history, in case anyone is interested in what else I've tried.
  • I measured the power supply with an oscilloscope and saw that it is not perfect. I tried connecting a linear stabilized power supply with minimal noise. That didn't help.
  • I rolled back to version 7.16.2. Performed a full reset to default settings. Did absolutely nothing additional. The problem persisted.
  • Tried to turn on without any cables connected (only wi-fi). In this case everything works, no problem. As, in general, there is no use of such a configuration.
  • I tried to build a minimal system of two Mikrotik devices connected by a cable (on the photo). The problem remains.
  • I tried replacing the cable, tried using a different port as wan. Nothing helped

That's where I leave my attempts to do something :( I'm out of ideas. I am truly disappointed and saddened to return to a device of another brand - much less flexible, but more stable. Perhaps, if I am alive, I will try to make friends with Mikrotik again in about 5 years.
Peace and good luck to all! Greetings from Ukraine!
