S+RJ10 Alternative For CRS309

Thu Mar 20, 2025 5:19 pm

New ISP provides 10G fiber service but ONT is 10GBase-T (RJ45 copper) only.
Despite MikroTik S-RJ10 general guidance I tried and also confirmed S+RJ10 is not reliable outside climate controlled environment.

While FTC11XG looks viable but has a weatherproof price, I want to exhaust other possibilities first.

I have researched MikroTik Forums extensively finding serveral topics confirming temperature issue with some alternative successes mentioned but not in full detail. I hope this post discovers an S+RJ10 alternative success story with exact make and model numbers and ideally some SOHO module temperature data.

All 10GE RJ45 SFPs gets hot. They are made to be used with a forced-air front-to-back switches.

I found claims Broadcom BCM84891L devices are low power like: Built-in Broadcom Chip, Max. Power Consumption 1.8W but at $140.00, more than FTC11XG option which is safest temperature risk.

2.7 Watts for S+RJ10 which idles at 90C at ambient 75F versus 1.8 Watts for new designs leaves me with some room for hope.

Just an out of the box idea

90-100 €/$ difference between a 2.7 W one and a 1.8 W might be a good investment, but sure it is hard on the budget.

I've seen people stick little heatsinks like those made for VRAM chips on the part of the SFP+ module that protrudes from the cage.

@jaclaz, yes the price difference and is 1.8 W enough margin? @cstarritt, agreed heatsink should help but how much help?

When ambient hits 78F recently, S+RJ10 shutdown at 95C standard limit. When ambient hits 96F as happens several days yearly I need to be up.

I pray a proven solution with temperature performance data emerges.

Fibermall 10G@80m comes with temperature reporting but not NBaseT support.

Ubiquiti UACC-CM-RJ45-MG supports 10G@100m and NBaseT but not temperature reporting (on CR309 at least).

Both should be utilizing the more efficient Broadcom chipset.

We had good experiences with Ubiquiti UACC-CM-RJ45-MG. It's about 60€ and we have it working fine in several MT device, including CRS309.
https://eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/category/ ... cm-rj45-mg

It uses one of the latest generations chipsets, max power consumption is 1.9W, compared to more than 3W for S+RJ10.
It still gets hot, about 70-75° on full load. But S+RJ10 goes up to 95° on full load.

There was some progress with 10G coppers SFPs, but driving a 10Gb signal into a copper wire so that there is enough of signal level at the other end requires power. That's just physics.

Thank you! I would appreciate seeing any module information you may have:
