Chateau Pro ax - Wi-Fi radio stops completely [failed to set country]

Tue Mar 04, 2025 7:23 pm

Hi everyone!
I have a completely new Chateau Pro ax router and now have issues with Wi-Fi radio that stops working randomly.
My main issue began just some time after connecting a USB external drive to it in order to run a few Docker containers on it (Adguard, Cloudflared,...) and to have it as a backup Samba share for my Proxmox server.
Then weird things started.... the Wi-Fi randomly started to just turn off (Wi-Fi LED on the router was also off).
When I connect with Winbox over Ethernet, the Wi-Fi radios seem like they are still enabled even though "/interface wifi radio print details" output is different before and after the Wi-Fi crash.
If I try and disable and then reenable the Wi-Fi interfaces (wifi1, wifi2), I get the error "failed to set country" and nothing works to fix this.
It's impossible to reenable the Wi-Fi radios and the only working option is to REBOOT the whole router and then it's working for some time before it turns off again...

I was troubleshooting this issue for the last week and have attached screenshots and exported info of the Wi-Fi radios before and after the issue below.
The reported info (/interface wifi radio print details) is different before the wifi crash as it is after the crash.

Today I hoped the latest update could help fix this WIFI issue so I updated to RouterOS 7.18.2 and upgraded the routerboard firmware.
The problem with WIFI still persists.
There is still not a single answer from Mikrotik support, I hope to get some help soon. :(

I updated to RouterOS 7.18.2 to try if there is a fix but I still have the same problem.

Did you mean export like:
/interface/wifi export file=wifi-export-error.txt

For /interface/wifi/radio export file=radios-export-error.txt I get no real content, just serial number and model.

Did you also upgrade firmware, besides RouterOS?
Last resort would be using Netinstall:
https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/spaces/R ... Netinstall

To be honest, I would RMA this device.

I did the firmware upgrade, yes.
I also used the Netinstall to start completely fresh but it didn't work.

I'm seriously considering returning it but would first much rather try any other possibilities...

Does the problem occur if you disconnect the external USB drive?
Is this drive powered through USB, or does it have it's own power supply?

Funny question, but did you ever try another country? :D

The WIFI was stable for a few days when I disconnected the USB drive, yes.
I tried 3 different external enclosured / drive bays, two with it's own power supply, one without.
Using any of them resulted in wifi crash... I used regular usb a-usb b 3.0 cables and also one with two ferrite magnets at both ends.
There was some more time before crash with the one with the magnets to reduce interference.

So ultimately I believe the cause is the usb interference but I would still expect this to normally cause only temporary signal loss and not a complete crash of wifi radio with no option to reset just the wifi radio.

Funny question, but did you ever try another country? :D
Haha :D
Ok, I'll try to choose another country and see what happens and report back here.

I changed the country to Bolivia and so far there has been no wifi crash even with external usb disk connected. :o :)
Uptime: ~30min

I will see if this will continue and will confirm if successful!
Thank you @itimo01 for the funny question / possible final solution

Sadly today I woke up to a wifi-less morning... :(
It looks like even the different country (such as Bolivia) didn't work completely to insure the wifi doesn't crash..
I get the same error "failed to set country" as before.

Wifi uptime was ~6,5h before going completely down.
I will now reboot router and look through the logs and exports and report them here.

Export: - nothing new, it seems...
/interface wifi configuration
add channel.skip-dfs-channels=10min-cac country=Bolivia disabled=no name=[wifiname] security.authentication-types=wpa2-psk,wpa3-psk ssid=[SSID]
/interface wifi
# failed to set country
set [ find default-name=wifi1 ] configuration=conf configuration.installation=indoor .mode=ap disabled=no
# failed to set country
set [ find default-name=wifi2 ] configuration=conf configuration.installation=indoor .mode=ap disabled=no

strange thing is that INTERFACE WIFI MONITOR doesn't even detect that wifi crashed and the radio is actually off.
Only the wifi LED on the device is turned off and tx-power is at 0 that indicates a problem...
INTERFACE WIFI MONITOR
 = = = wifi1 = = =
               state: running
             channel: 5745/ax/Ceee
    registered-peers: 0
    authorized-peers: 0
            tx-power: 0
= = = wifi2 = = =
               state: running
             channel: 2432/ax/Ce
    registered-peers: 0
    authorized-peers: 0
            tx-power: 0

and only after I've disabled and reenabled wifi interfaces I get to see the error failed to set country.
And only then the INTERFACE WIFI MONITOR shows the radios are off:
INTERFACE WIFI MONITOR
 = = = wifi1 = = =
     ;;; failed to set country
  state: disabled

 = = = wifi2 = = =
     ;;; failed to set country
  state: disabled

My advice:

Get your Chateau Pro into working state (reboot or whatever it tskes), take supout file as reference (when it works). Then wait for Chateau Pro to fail again. Create another supout file. Then restart wifi interfaces (to see the dreaded message) and create the third supout file.

When you have those 3 files, open a ticket with support (e-mail, support web page) and upload all 3 files.

That's the best way of solving the problem.

Thanks for the tip!
The thing is I did all this already, the support ticket is open but there is no answer, nothing as a reply from the Mikrotik support. :(

Have the same issue on same device. It's because USB3 generates RF noise in Wifi 2.4GHz range.

I've put usb cable and disk itself in aluminum foil to check if it's related to RF noise and it's helps. Looking for solution how to shield the disk in more straight way)

Yes, I've tried the same thing already, but it still ”crashed” when copying or moving a lot of files from or to the USB-attached disk.
I cannot afford to have a Wi-Fi router that can lose Wi-Fi completely (until the complete reboot cycle !) just because of some temporary RF noise.
I would maybe even settle for temporary loss of Wi-Fi during this noise, but I cannot work with current instabilities...

Try using a USB2.0 cable and move the USB 3.0 device a little further (it will be slower but it will avoid the interference).

Thanks for the tip, I may have a look if I have such a cable lying around at home to try… just for the sake of troubleshooting.
Otherwise, having usb 2.0 speeds is not an option for my setup, because I’m using the disk for automated server backups and also as a samba share, so that would make it too slow.

Yep, of course it is for troubleshooting only :D .

Usually the problem with attempting to isolate a radio frequency device is that the (USB in this case) power or data cable acts as antenna, so, even if you enclose the device in (say) a Danish biscuit tin box, the connection cable still transmits the interference.

In any case you need a good, shielded, USB3 cable, double and triple shielding is common in industrial environments, though they are not cheap.

I have a similar problem, without using USB.
All 3-5 weeks I have to power off and on to get back my WiFi Netwoks. Managed with CapsMan.
Do you also use CapsMan?

No, I’m not using CapsMan for my router.
Does your wifi suffer the same “failed to set country” problem after you reenable the wifi interface?
Do you think CapsMan is the problem in your case?

Try checking the messages in the log, as well as information about memory availability and device temperature
