Request: Separate hardware from RouterOS software licensing to reduce tariffs

Sun Apr 27, 2025 10:25 pm

I'm going to get an RDS for testing... Realized their are now tariffs on such things in US...

I'd like to purpose Mikrotik offer SKUs for a "hardware-only" version of routers/switch (or at least ones on the expensive side) for US. And, the paying for license for RouterOS, separately, since that part of the purchase would not be subject to tariffs (AFAIK).

While for one router it is not too significant (and RDS is pretty aggressively priced), but at scale these tariffs would add up. So I can imagine for larger distributors etc, avoiding at least some of the US tariffs be helpful.

Interesting idea, though it assumes that they actually account for a "software license" as part of the total cost of the device. Since MT is the "OEM" in this case, pre-loading their own software onto their own hardware (a-la "Apple"), that might not be the case. If it isn't & they are essentially bundling the OS for "free" and making all of their profits via the hardware margins, then there may not be enough real wiggle-room in the margins for them to be able to drop the price by much, even if they anticipate one software license sale per unit purchased (required in order to make it usable). In that case, it might not end up being any cheaper, and the total price might still end up being more...

RouterOS license is included for free with our devices.

@Amm0; Last I checked, Balticnetworks and Wavonline still had a bunch of RDS2216 in stock.

Otherwise, you could import directly from the UK/EU/Lithuania, where I think tariffs are still around 10 % (at least for a couple of months more). If you order it from Lithuania, the seller should remove the 21 % VAT, so you’d just be paying the net price + shipping + the 10 % import tariff and possibly local sales tax if you don’t have a valid resale certificate.

Ps.
Unless I’m missing something..
