Switch with 3 SFP+ port

Sat Apr 15, 2017 4:49 am

Hi

We are planning an intra-city 10G ring using Mikrotik. Image

The diagram shows our initial plan.

All our equipment will be 10G.

There is primary 10G link from our main ISP. This link is fed to a 10G switch1. This is forwarded to a 10G switch2, where a 10G router is connected and also the 10G link is forwarded to switch 2 and so on till a RSTP ring is formed with switch1.

It is clear that each of the switches need at least 3 10G SFP+ ports.

What are my options? Is mikrotik planning on releasing switches with 3 (or more) SFP+ ports?
One of the switches need to be smaller in size due to lack of space in that location.

One solution is using the CRS210 and aggregating the 1G ports for the SUB ISP Routers. But 3 SFP+ would be so much neater.

Have you thought about other brand switches like Cisco, Juniper, HPE? I use Cisco 3850 as my core switch, and several 2950 on the customers' side. Working perfectly...

You should consider a Layer-3 instead a Layer-2 backbone.
With Layer-2 and RSTP one of your 10Gig links will allways be blocked.
When you use a Layer-3 backbone with OSPF Routing all your links will run and if you want to transport Layer-2 traffic you can use VPLS, EoIP,...
Instead using a Layer-2 Switch and behind it a router, you can use the CCR-1072 and you will have 8 SFP+ ports that also supports 1Gig SFPs.
So you will have your switch and router in one box. I have such a network with 10 x CCR-1072, OSPF, MPLS and VPLS running since month without problems.

Yes. I have considered other brands. There is a D-Link 16 port 10 gig switch available for around 1000 USD.

But my most limiting factor at the moment is cost of equipment. The mikrotik switches @ 200-300 USD would have be perfect for my budget which I can push to 500 USD if needed.

Were it not for the cost I would have definitely opted for a ccr1072 in each location.

So if Mikrotik came out with a <500USD switch with 5 SFP+ it would be great.

You would need to wait for the SFP+ crs that Mikrotik has announced at the latest MUM. However it will only be released later this year, and I doubt it would be <$500, maybe a bit more.
You would also ideally want a switch with dual PSU's as well - which the new Mikrotik has.

If you are in a rush get something second hand on Ebay or an Ubiquiti edgeswitch 12 port SFP+.

Yeah.. The Ubiquiti Edgeswitch 16 XG. This is exactly the type of thing I was looking for. Thanks,,
Hmm. So Mikrotik did announce an SFP+ CRS huh? Maybe I will wait and see. Hope they don't take too long in releasing it.

The Edgeswitch is ~550 USD ...within my range.. a little stretched but manageable... I think there is a good chance the Mikrotik CRS would be sub 500 USD.

The CRS317-1G-16S+RM was announced in Decembers newsletter. With a release date of Q2 2017, no official hardware spec released yet.

ES-16-XG did not work well with DAC cable, you'd better try fiber instead. But some users reported that some DACs can work well, like fs.com. If you are lucky, maybe you can have good DACs that can work on it well.
