RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN or RB4011iGS+RM with cAP ac

Wed Apr 22, 2020 12:50 am

Hi,

I upgraded my internet at home to 1Gbps down and 50Mbps up. My current router is not able to go over 400Mbps. I do think it may not be a router issue, but I'm considering an upgrade.
I do like the RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN but was wondering if it is better to have two separate devices, one as the router and one AP, like the RB4011iGS+RM with the cAP ac.
I know that the cAP ac does not go to 1300Mbps, for me 867Mbps is enough.
Do I get any performance benefits in splitting the AP from the router?
Or do you have any other suggestions for a home router with one AP (not a big apartment)?

Thank you.

I have the same question like you. I wonder if I could buy RB4011 without wifi and place the AP at a better spot using cAP ac. I won't get any benefit from the fancy antennas of RB4011 because there are walls and it will work better if I add multiple APs.

I just upgraded from a 2011 with wifi to a 4011 with wifi last week at home. The 4011 doesn't seem to have the wifi problems that made the 2011 wifi terribly unreliable. So far, I'm quite happy with the 4011.

I used a separate AP with the 2011 and disabled the 2011 wifi because it was so unstable. Wifi connections would randomly drop for 5-30 seconds.

The 4011 uses different wifi chipsets, so that gave me confidence to try it again. So far, I'm happy and the wifi seems reliable. I figured if I needed additional wifi coverage, I could supplement the router wifi with a separate AP located elsewhere in the house. So far, I haven't needed to expand wifi coverage.

Thanks for the information. How about the wifi range of 4011? Because it seems powerful with the antennas does the signal drop fast after 1-2 walls?

I haven't done any real analysis. I had usable signal on my phone when I was about 100 feet away yesterday.

Currently I am about 20 feet (~7 meters) from the unit. Signal is passing through a brick and frame wall. My phone shows a signal strength of -59dBm on 2.4GHz and -65dBm on 5GHz.
