Noob POE Question

Mon Oct 26, 2020 3:09 am

Hey guys,

Total noob when it comes to POE, but I am looking at buying the CSS326-24G-2S+RM switch and mentions something about "POE In: Passive PoE" on this switch. I hear that you should never plug a non-POE device into a passive POE switch due to passive's inability to check if the the device is POE enabled or not. I'm guessing that's for switches which supply POE out. This switch mentions POE in and I'm confused as to what that means exactly. Does POE In mean you can power this switch from another switch that supplies POE?

Product Page: https://mikrotik.com/product/CSS326-24G-2SplusRM

Any insight into what "POE In" means on this switch would be greatly appreciated!

It just means it can be powered by a switch or injector with sufficient power.

If you do get passive poe out devices, injectors are generally less safe as they don't do as many checks (or none at all) on the connected devices, unlike switches. Switches normally default to checking the line before supplying power - but this can normally be overridden.
