CHR is useless for disaster recovery scenarios

Sun Nov 08, 2020 4:17 am

Hello,

CHR is useless for disaster recovery scenarios.
Imagine you have nice backups made weekly or daily.. stored VM images on some external SAN.
On disaster recovery, You can restore image using just one click.

No, no - not with Mikrotik.

After restore licence will be set to FREE (1mbit tx cap on each iface).
When you will try to assign new licence, and transfer old unused licence on mikrotik.com, you will see: error: this system id with old id already received one trial license key

So new installation, restore backup, all this mess.......
Any way to change this at server side ? Atm that's just purely useless.
I think it should be possible to add System ID manually at mikrotik.com
That would solve everything - adding new ID to mikrotik.com, assigning valid licence, and then login through CRS so it could fetch no trial, but actual licence.

The OP probably did not make a good backup of the original machine, but rather made a "clone" and used that.
This clone has a different MAC address and won't accept the same license.
Instead he should have shutdown the machine, copied its files, then power back on and keep the copied files.
Restoring that should result in a machine with the same ID as before.

Not sure if should I mention that, but i have figured that out already.
When VM image is being restored, copied, at least in ESXi hypervisor, when it will ask whether VM was Copied/Moved just answer MOVED.
License will be untouched, but beware about MAC conflicts, though it shuoldn't be problems when it's just disaster recovery situation

Of course. When you thought this was a way to copy a CHR to a different one and then operate both of them using the same license, of course it is not.
For recovery of a CHR after configuration or upgrade mistake, or loss of the ESXi host, it works OK.

I think you should make your template without a license installed, and then clone it and you can get a trial license or assign a paid license to each cloned copy.
But I never tried that, I have always just installed the .ova instead of doing any cloning.
