Mikrotik CHR speed performance problem on VMware ESXi 6.7

Fri Apr 17, 2020 4:45 pm

Hello!

I have a problem with CHR performance on ESXi.

I have:
1. CHR 6.46.5. (unlim trial) (4vCPU + 4 GB)
2. VMware vCenter Server 6.7.0.43000 (15976714)
3. VMware ESXi (VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 15160138).
4. Cluster from 2 node on 2xXeon CPU E5645 @ 2.40GHz
5. DSwitch (6.6.0).
6. VMXNET3

Test 1
There is a VLAN100 on DSwitch. There are CHR1 (10.1.10.11) and CHR2 (10.1.10.12). Everything is at L2 level. Both CHRs on the one ESXi host.
On ESXi-node01 VLAN100 (CHR1 (10.1.10.11) <--------> CHR2 (10.1.10.12)).
Start Tools / Bandwidth Test:
1. Use TCP / Both = Tx / Rx 2.7 Gbps / 2.7 Gbps
2. Use TCP / receive = Tx / Rx 0 bps / 6.4 Gbps
3. Use TCP / send = Tx / Rx 6.4 Gbps / 0 bps

Test 2
Debain 10 x64 + iperf3
There is a VLAN100 on DSwitch. There are Debian1 (10.1.10.101) <-------> Debian2 (10.1.10.102). Everything is at L2 level. Both Debian on the one ESXi host.
I see 17 Gbps.

And I do not understand why it happend, please help me.

If your problem is the Speed difference 6Gbps vs 17 Gbps, i can only tell you that iperf is a better, if not the best, way to test your actual bandwidth...
Using Bandwidth test from mikrotik to mikrotik uses the CPU and that can,and will, dicrease performance...
So please check during your Bandwidth test from CHR to CHR and let us know about the CPU usage...

The best way however from RouterOS to RouterOS speedtest would be to use the Traffic generator...

Do you use Mikrotik CHR and do not reach your maximum speed?

The solution is to acquire a P Unlimited license whatever the speed of your provider.

For days and weeks I did not find an explanation why my CHR 6.48.2 did not reach the maximum speed of my P1 license (1Gb) and stayed at herratic speeds between 80Mb-220Mb, until I put a demo of a P4 (10Gb) and voila the speed doubled but it still did not reach the 1 Gb contracted, I put a demo license P unlimited and EUREKA! now it reaches 1 Gb and with super low processor usage

I realized when it was something of the internal software when on a clean copy I added 2 ethernet in a bridge and with it passed through the Bridge the problem occurred and when putting the direct VM it did not occur, and then I decided to change the license because there was no no parameter of anything that could interfere with the simple functionality of a Switch
