RSTP with VLAN .. How does it work?

Wed Sep 08, 2021 6:06 am

I have a CSS610 switch that I believe only supports RSTP (being a limitation with SwOS).
It has multiple VLANs setup and I have the same VLANs setup on all of my other switches as well:

I am wondering:
  • Is RSTP aware of VLANs? My understanding that I should be using MSTP with VLANS?
  • I believe I can only have a single root bridge with RSTP. Is it possible to have "per VLAN" RSTP where VLAN10 goes via EdgeSwitch.. and VLAN30 goes via CRS309 (as root bridge)?

RSTP knows nothing of VLANs. If you have the same untagged and tagged VLANs on all the non-edge links using RSTP is fine, it will block all traffic on one of the links to prevent a loop.

If you wish to have the block in different places around the loop for differing groups of VLANs you need MSTP.
